Did anyone see that Kylo Ren-versus-dinosaurs movie from a couple of years back? Was that any good? a waste of dinosaurs and Adam Driver. Frustratingly boring.

I’m still trying to find a quiet spell at work so I can take the day off and go see it. So far, not happening.

Need to see it soon before it's out of the cinema, how is it doing so poorly at the box office?? Is it? It's the only movie other than Dune pt 2 that everyone I talk to at work or socially has gone to see... I am a deeply unrepresentative warhammer nerd though.

Having the Tories in a debate like this is the very definition of gaslighting.

Not sure we can blame the Tories for Furiosa's weak box office.

Tories are beyond even Miller's vision for a cabal of subhuman mutations

Yeah it’s not doing very well, no idea why. I guess mad max isn’t a big draw, but it’s phenomenal. The level of creativity and craft on display is unreal. It’s bananas.

Tories are beyond even Miller's vision for a cabal of subhuman mutations Sunak sprays silver paint on his face and screams "witness me!" as he launches a badly timed election.

I blame Garfield. Stealing all the audience like he steals lasagne.
And none thought to do a Garfuriosa PR event to share the spoils.

(it's because people are fucking stupid and don't have good taste in movies) That, plus it's targetting an already fairly small audience - the market for a pretty unusual, action film with a women lead, prequel to an odd (but brilliant) film, but without any of those stars was going to be a fairly hard sell. I thought it would do better, and obviously the studio did too but other films that have been decent and more mainstream have also struggled. It seems to be at a point where it's really hard to predict how well a film could do.

I forgive every flaw in Lost World just because of the scene transition from woman screaming on the beach to Jeff Goldblum yawning on the subway. I'm blessed by my timeline today

Hit Man (Netflix) 8/10
Didn't find it at all funny, I don't think I even smiled at anything that happened once but the film itself was good. Powell was good and can obviously lead a film now (just as well as he's in fucking everything), although I'm not convinced he knows how to be funny. The plot, acting etc. was otherwise all good. I could see it being funny (if that's what they wanted) with someone like Ryan Reynolds.
Why is Powell in everything. Still, he did a good job co-writing this too.

It (Hit Man) isn’t really a comedy at all despite the fact that it’s pitched as a light hearted silly comedy
I think it’s a bit deeper than that and is surprisingly dialogue heavy at times

Rewatched The Creator
I actually enjoyed it more this second time around, but the final act is still pretty rubbish.
7/10, which might be more than I gave it previously. Or maybe it's the same.

The Creator feels like there's a bunch of scenes missing with the car trip, the family risk themselves for no reason in the theatrical cut. I'd love a longer cut that puts stuff back but I doubt that'll ever happen.

Oh yeah it's still disjointed but knowing what to expect softens the blow.

It stole its plot twist from one of my favorite kids books??

First 10 minutes of Madame Web:
I have kinda a soft spot for slightly naff YA / Action movies, so despite all the bad reviews I kinda wanted to watch this. I only had time for the first 10 mins, so I hope it gets better. First 10 mins is terrible. Really dumb setup. Very exposition heavy dialogue.
"Yeah, this is the rare spider that no-one has ever found. The one that's rumored to be used by the tree-top-spider-tribe to turn themselves into super strong ninja-types, but no-one has ever seen them either so it's definitely just a myth. Oh, here's the spider. Oh who is that in the treetops?'
Having an entire mystical amazon tribe who paint their bodies red and wear kinda nets swapped around themselves in a way that makes them look kinda like spiderman is certainly a choice. I assume it comes from the comics, so maybe not entirely their fault.
Then cut to modern day america with very exposition-heavy dialogue that seems very badly acted.
I'll try a bit more later, as it seems harsh to judge on only the first few minutes. But it really doesn't make a good first impression!

The First Omen
Yeah, it’s one of those prequels that doesn’t really need to exist, but actually it was a fairly engaging watch. Don’t let the opening scene put you off, it more or less goes its own way once it gets that out of its system.
The thing that elevated this for me was some really nice cinematography throughout. It never ever looks boring, which is quite something when you’re following a group of nuns for 2 hours.
6/10

Hit Man
It was movie night last night and it came down to a choice between this and Falling Down which I've seen countless times but my sons haven't...and I feel like we made the wrong choice.
It's pretty slickly shot, edited, paced, performances are decent but, really, once you get past the (real life) hook of Johnson and his role playing there's really not a lot going on here. Apart from occasionally quite amusing bits - the sting montage for instance - I can't remember much about it. Worth a watch if there's nothing else on, maybe.
6/10

Leave the world behind - a generous 6/10. I quite liked the stillness and suspense it created but it still took too long to not do much at all. Director clearly influenced by Kubrick with some of the shots but also felt a bit of style over substance.
