The Platform 2 - 7/10
If ever a film didn't need a sequel, it was probably The Platform. But, I really enjoyed this. More than a 7 tbh, but it is quite a mess, so YMMV.
I'm a sucker for being drip fed extended story and lore in sci-fi things and that's the direction they go in here. It separates itself from the first film with a interesting variation on the sociopolitical dynamics of the tower where some of the inmates are imposing effectively socialism to ensure the lower levels actually get some food. Seeing that play out is fun and could've been enough for a straightforward sequel but they throw in a whole bunch of other stuff as well, which will split the audience I think.
One very cool sequence towards the end which I wasn't expecting.

Rebel Ridge (2024) - 70/100 - An above average Netflix production. I've only seen a couple of the directors other films - it's not as intense as Blue Ruin or Green Room and feels a little more formulaic, but solid performances all round make this an entertaining watch. It's quite long but doesn't drag, if anything the ending feels a tad rushed.

I feel Joker in Joker 1 is to incel losers what Alf Garnett was to elderly racists. If you identify with them, you're sort of missing the point. I wasn't aware anybody was seriously championing him, were they?

I will see Joker FAD (as no one is calling it) at some point but I’m going in preparing for it to be pants. The aspect that worries me is that for a kind-of, sort-of musical, no one has had anything to say about the music. As I say, personally thought the musical elements work the best. When it goes all in on it there is suddenly a spark of life to the film (I've seen a few reviews that say this too). But a lot of the time it is a bit half-hearted or shortened. Lady Gaga is pretty good, but she doesn't get as much screen time as you would expect. If they really had to make a sequel, I think it would have been better to have the film much more from her perspective. For me the music was awful. All slow paced, often a cappella and all some frank sinatra esk shite. . I like a musicals as well most of the time.

I'm sure there were plenty of people that did "relate" to him, although most of the people who say they do are likely just saying that to be all edgy and upset all the "right people". There was also the whole fear of copycat crimes around the original, which I expect was encouraged by the studio to add more danger to it. The film itself is quite clear it is following an unreliable narrator and even then he still can't portray himself as anything but a totally pathetic individual.

I mean, you can relate to him in the sense that he's a dude with mental health issues who is shat upon by most people in his life. Including his parents. You feel sorry for him!
That doesn't mean he's right to murder people. That's not relatable! But I don't think it's terribly controversial to say that the first Joker movie encouraged you to have some measure of sympathy for him.

The Crow (2024) I spotted this on Prime for a £5 rental, so decided to take our chance; my wife being a big fan of the original/long black coats/NIN. I think the original is an overrated, hard to watch mess. But it has Ernie Hudson. The new one really isn’t as bad as the reviews made out, but I mean that comparatively speaking. It is a load of rubbish, but it doesn’t stand out as being the worst thing ever. It spends way too much time trying to convince you how in love Eric and Shelly are/were without ever actually being convincing. There is zero chemistry between the two leads, and FKA (weird first name) Twiggy isn’t a very good actor. Perhaps she was brought in for the very tiny bit of singing she had to do? The whole thing plods along with lots of snogging and naked Skarsgard action. There’s a bit of boogeyman action which might make Crow purists raise an eyebrow. There’s very little crow action (aside from lots of shots of cgi crows flapping around and crowing) until the last 15-20 minutes. When it does kick off, it is VERY visceral. Nasty, gruesome stuff. I didn’t expect that from this. It takes such a turn that I was actually a bit shocked, and not in an exciting way. It isn’t as shit as the reviews would have you believe, but it also doesn’t have Ernie Hudson. So, meh. 4/10 Just noticed my Amazon account has been charged £5 for renting Civil War, which I haven’t seen. A quick look shows that The Crow is very much not out, so I guess I must have clicked a cock up and seen the film before it was out. Not that it was very good. This situation (that ultimately nobody cares about but it's an odd one so...) has gotten stranger. I've just received a refund for the movie I didn't rent. We're writing to confirm that we have processed your refund for £5.49 for the above-referenced order.
The refund amount will be credited to your payment methods as listed in the breakdown below. Credits will be issued within 10 business days (sooner for most payment methods).
The following is the breakdown of your refund:............................................................................ Item(s) Returned: Civil War Prime Video Again - I watched The Crow (2024). I guess... for free?

Woop! Reminds me, I discovered that half a dozen films I bought on Amazon are now no longer in my library. I need to harangue them.

The Substance
Some films you really just have to go in fresh and let people see it for themselves, so going to talk around the film rather than about it here…
But do you like butts? Do you like unboxing videos? Would you want to see Dennis Quaid cast as Vince McMahon in the inevitable biopic ? Do you REALLY like butts?
If you answered yes to any of these, you will enjoy this film.
I felt it was a bit hokey in places… and I have so many questions about the world the film inhabits which I won’t ask here for fear of spoilers… but it goes places and just keeps going. And going.
Also fair play to Demi Moore for what is, for me, a career-best performance.
9/10
Saw it with my partner who liked it less than me. She says she’s still trying to “process” it.

Definitely didn't need a sequel but am looking forward to watching it.

The Shining Extended Edition
No need to comment on the original movie itself. Still a masterpiece, and the way it builds up to the final 20 minutes is amazing even now.
I will comment on the extra bits then. They are all deleted scenes, making up roughly 30 minutes total. Many of those scenes don't really add anything to the movie, especially the ones with Halloran making his way back to the hotel. Most are just small scenes to set up the next one (for example, Wendy telling Danny that he's going to talk to Jack, before the stairs scene) but there's too many and all of them feel fairly pointless. The only scene that might be useful is an early one that explains how Danny had his arm broken and Jack stopped drinking because of it. Even assuming it's really that important in context, it could have easily been shorter.
The big problem is that the extra scenes make the movie run for nearly 2 hours and half, and almost all of them were added to the original's first 90 minutes, severely slowing down the buildup to the climax. That means you gotta wait 2 hours before all hell breaks loose, and it frankly becomes bit too much. Overall, I can see why Kubrick decided to cut those scenes. The movie works much better in its shorter format.
So I'd give it 7/10, it's still solid enough, but really much better in its original form (which is still a 9/10 to me).

I didn't think I'd seen that version, but turns out I have and I'd totally forgotten most scenes, other than Halloran returning. Either that or I watched the deleted scenes on DVD. Agree that the theatrical is better though.

I still know what you did last summer - 7/10 Nowhere near as good as the first one and not a patch on the scream movies, but it still has the 90s YA horror vibe and loads of kills so worth a watch.
Dog soldiers - 8.5/10 I’ve somehow never seen this all the way through or more possibly sober. It’s great and really well made. Let down a bit by the budget and direction, I like low budget but this feels like a college indie movie in parts and the lighting, sound etc. are all off (might be a dodgy copy tbf). The werewolves look good though. It’s great and thoroughly entertaining.
Dick Tracy - 5/10 Not seen this since I went to watch it at the cinema. I remember the cartoon slightly too. It’s obviously well made, has great set design and make up effects etc. but it’s just a bit boring and somehow warren Beatty has no charisma at all in the Role. Loads of A listers in it, but only Pacino is any good. I was looking forward to this one too ☹️

I kept expecting it to spark into life at any second but it just stays flat - really flat, throughout. I've tried to watch it several times now, because it clearly had a lot of work put into it, (and various flatmates have owned the dvd) but it's as "meh" a thing that I've ever encountered

Azrael - 7/10
Well that was brutal, if you like your post apocalyptic horror to deliver non stop pain and suffering for the lead, this is the one for you. It has elements of folk horror and is very well made, but it could have done with a bit more world building as it has scene in the middle that hints at wider scope. Cracking ending though and well worth a watch if you like this sort of thing.

Puss in Boots:the last wish. First time watching it and I was struck by how much the animation style in Spider-Man:Across the Spider verse lifts from this. I say lifts, but I really mean rips off. Don't believe me, go back and watch it.
Transformers One. Predictable but entertaining. Proto-bumblebee is especially good.

Into the Spider-verse was a big influence on The Last Wish and TNMT:Mutant Mayhem, the director of TMNT said it opened doors to try different stuff that studios just wouldn't attempt before.
Spider-verse winning the best animated picture Oscar helped things change.

Neither are as good as The Mitchells vs. the Machines though. Shame that didn't get a theatrical release because of COVID, Sony didn't have a lot of choice but to sell broadcast rights to Netflix.

Do Netflix movies ever make it off netflix? Like, are they likely to show up on iPlayer or something 3 years later, like theatrical movies do, or for rent / to buy on disc or on Amazon Prime Video or something?
Or are they literally walled off in Netflix forever? The latter would be a shame.

In the case of Mitchells it's on Blu-ray so presumably Sony kept those rights separate from the other distribution ones.
