How well (or otherwise!) would the games in Mass Effect: Legendary Edition hold up for a first-time player in 2022, do you reckon?
For reference, the "oldest" game I own is Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, as part of the Nathan Drake Collection; Bluepoint did a great job of remastering the original Uncharted trilogy, though, which *may* have surpassed what BioWare managed in ME: LE.

The first game is still pretty rough, like if you're used to modern games with slick combat systems it might be difficult to adjust.
Still very much worth playing, though!

It's a classic trilogy, play em. As said, the first one feels a bit dated but the quality jumps a fair bit between that and the second, so don't be put off

I played through the trilogy for the first time earlier this year. Doesn't matter that the first one is a bit dated. They're all great.

I'm playing Mass Effect 1 (Legendary Ed.) for the first time and I have to say, in motion at 120fps in HDR, it's one of the best looking games I've played so far on Series X / LG OLED.
I'd say it holds up very well. The only things I'm not a fan of are the obtuse inventory management for your squad (this should have been streamlined for the Legendary Ed. release) and the fact every indoor location during planet exploration is the exact same 2 storey "warehouse" but with crates placed in differing layouts.
Edit: I played Mass Effect 2 and 3 on X360 and they're a more refined experience than the first game, so I imagine the Legendary Ed. versions look and play great.

Thanks, all.
I've just ordered Legendary Edition from Amazon - I had a voucher that was due to expire on December 31, so it only cost me £13.00 - and it should arrive on Tuesday, all being well. Let the adventures of Dax Shepard, Space Dick commence!

Protip: be a Renegade. You don't have to subscribe to the space racism, just put a few points into intimidate and get to punching people.

I’m about halfway through ME1 and second everything Darkling says.
The planet and boarding assignments are all a bit rough and basic but the actual story missions, character stuff and real side quests all totally hold up.
Only other thing is that not all of the NPCs have been upscaled to the same degree. I’m guessing it’ll iron itself ouf across 2 and 3 but it is a but noticeable if you play femshep that her new default is the ME3 model made backwards compatible and you has to deal with some real playmobil looking colonists in ME1 by comparison.
I’m still having a very good time though.
It might be a mistake but I’m having such a fun time that even with two and half games to go in the trilogy I did buy Andromeda for a fiver last night. I’ve not played it before and expecting it to be underwhelming even with low expectations.

I also got a 4K HDR OLED on a Black Friday sale and reinstalled some games I'd like to see on that, among them the LE Trilogy and Andromeda. I've only started the first level in each so far, but to my surprise ME1LE looked pretty great but Andromeda was very disappointing. The lighting in Andromeda is so flat that it looks only marginally better than on my IPS screen, ME1LE on the other hand has great contrast and deep vibrant colours so that I agree it's one of the best looking games I've tried so far on the new TV. It may have a lot to do with the artistic direction of these first levels, the tutorial planet in ME:A is basically just a bunch of light grey rocks with some random ass alien vegetation, while ME1's Eden Prime looks like it's taken straight out of oldschool sci-fi illustrations. Maybe things will change a little in other locations, but first impressions are striking.

It has a lot of issues but there's still a good chunk of decent game underneath, at least gameplay-wise. The worst thing about it imo is the lacklustre narrative, which is of course not good in a game bearing the Mass Effect name.

Does it do the Dragon Age Inquisition thing of hiding a solid 30 hour story driven rpg in a 90 hour mmorpg and Ubisoft influenced collectathon?

It had similar micro-open worlds with countless side-objectives, but it feels more optional in Andromeda. Story progression is what’s required to progress, rather than “power” points or whatever.

To elaborate, the bits of story I found most interesting got going, only to stop because of the fractured nature of the design. IE, once you've been to another handful of new planets, then you'll get the next part of it, but all it did was knacker the flow of the story, and any impetus I felt to find out more of that thread was lost.

Mass Effect is one of those series that I can just play over and over again with no issues of boredom. It's one of my favourite universes in sci-fi. Might have to rebuy Legendary Edition on Steam next so I can play it on my Steam Deck.

So the ugliest Shepard of all time has just set off on his jaunt across the galaxy. (I briefly toyed with calling him Thelordismy, for shits and giggles, but Dax seemed pithier.)
So far, he's kind of a dick - he keeps snapping at people for no apparent reason, and when one of his colleagues died moments after landing on Eden Prime, his reaction was far from caring.

Sounds like a fine addition to the Shepherd Legacy so far.

Male shep's voice acting improves so much over the series. He's very wooden in the first one

It's a shame about that crew member on Eden Prime. He was so close to retirement! Even bought a boat and everything!

I punched out a guy who was having some sort of panic attack on Eden Prime, which made me laugh out loud.
Initial impressions are very positive indeed! Sure, it's a bit janky, but still very playable; more importantly, it seems like a lot of fun.
Oh, and despite my best attempts to be off-putting by being both ugly and a total asshole, I may have made the sexy time with the Asari Consort at the Citadel.

Already thinking ahead to ME2 and part of me thinks it’ll be more cinematic and dramatic if not everyone makes if. But then the companion quests are a big part of what makes it the highest rated game in the series and I don’t want to deprive myself of any content in 2 or 3 unnecessarily

"I'm gonna be a hero just like you, Commander!" "JENKINS NOOOOOO" I was this days old when I realised that NPC racing out into crossfire like an idiot was a Leeroy Jenkins reference.

His name is Richard L Jenkins as well so you have to assume that stands for Leeroy

That panic attack was a safety threat, it needed to be neutralized with prejudice

Love these games. I played the collection when it first came out so missed the freebie. Intrigued that andromeda may still be worth a playthrough, I just avoided it as thought it was supposed to be a bit of a train wreck.
Jealous of those going through it the first time, with some of the changes made the first one isn't as jarring and the story etc more than makes up for any misgivings there.

I’m still Janeway-ing my way across the cosmos at the moment. I can’t really imagine how planning renegade would fit with the main plot without you looking like a total maniac
