Cathedral all done. For a minute I was lost but I missed a staircase off to the side.

That was the first "cool" boss like a dark souls boss with decent cut scenes etc and nice and creepy.

There is nothing interesting about any areas what so ever. I'm maybe about half way through chapter 5 of apparently 11 and nothing has grabbed me yet. I mean it's pretty good fun but there's been better From software copies. It's more making me want to play through Bloodborne again.

That's funny because I'm bounching off it a bit but thought it would be far more up your street. It's definitely down to atmosphere for me as well. The setting etc isn't doing it for me at all, and I think I need that as much as anything else.

It's interesting to hear the more recent lukewarm opinions. I went it with no knowledge or expectations and was delighted by how good it is. I do agree it doesn't have the character of e.g. Bloodborne, a Souls game or even LofT, but it seems a bit harsh to say there is nothing interesting about the areas...I know, it's just your opinion. Which non-From genre clones do you rate above it, bichii2 ? |

Both nioh games, wo long, mortal shell, ashen. Maybe even the surge 2. I have a hard time classing Nioh games in the same category. It just feels like a different genre with the in-depth emphasis on action. I think that's just me as everyone else dumps them in the soulsbourne basket. Anyway, regardless, they are two of the best games of all time, so I agree. The Surge 2 is brilliant and really underrated. Mortal Shell was meh, totally forgettable (my son loves it though), as were others like Hellpoint and Thymesia, which skew very close to the formula while feeling like ersatz cheap knock-offs. TL, DR: we all have different opinions, shock horror. But also what mikeck says above. You lukewarm types are not welcome in these here parts. |

I really want to play Lies of P right now but a) my younger son gets the Series X on Friday evenings (Dead Space remake right now, straight after playing the original, bless him) b) I'm going out in 30 minutes, as I did have friends once and feel obliged to maintain some kind of parasocial bullshit relationship with the fuckers. And I'm working this weekend  Maybe if I get up very early.... Sorry, wrong thread, thought this was the first world problems discussion. |

Saying Lies of P doesnt have atmosphere and then lists Mortal Shell as better is...something. The game where one of the areas is just a massive empty field.
I will say some of my favourite atmospheric moments comes after the cathedral so there's that to look forward to.

I've talked about it at greater length in their own thread, but the Niohs play very differently to Souls overall. Loot showers aside, in many ways they incentivise and reward aggressive gameplay and doing your thing without caring about what the boss does too much. In extreme cases, sometimes a fight is won or lost before you even step foot in the boss arena, because you didn't prepare your build and playstyle enough. |

Just run, the splat attacks pretty much always miss.
Still can't believe I consumed boss souls and missed out on the two best strength weapons (apparently).
Part of my problem might be my weapon choice. It wrecks but has almost no moves. Just smash, smash or bigger smash once or hold for spin smash. That's it. It's the giant pipe wrench.
I want the holy sword or this other large sword I can't remember the name to. Oh well.

The boss weapons are interesting more than essential - I consumed my first boss ergo too, but at that point the benefit in levelling may even have outweighed the weapon. I used the Holy sword for a while and that got me through a good number of bosses early on. Frozen Feast is reaaaaally slow, and I just didn't find it fun. The best Motivity weapon doesn't appear until very late game and even then it's best used for farming. But once I got the Salamander blade upgraded that became my default (alongside the Electric coil for puppets) even on a Motivity build (with cranked handles). Hell, I beat the final final boss with the Electric coil; it's awesome! |

For the first time I a bit twitchy about the amount of souls I've got. I've always managed to get them back so far so no lvls lost.
Those big green mutant things are tricky.

Thankfully, I didn’t consume the boss souls purely because of how closely it was copying Froms homework. I got the full set of boss weapons because the amulets seemed ludicrously heavy for what they did. And partly because most boss weapons scaled with my build. At least three really great ones to choose from.

Ha, Door Guardian, what a prick I fell for it - I just couldn't work out why he was taking hardly any damage...until I worked it out Some people didn't like this last tower level? I think it's brilliant so far. |

I like the tower level too after finishing it, the feeling of ascending the tower beating all the enemies feels nice. But it is aesthetically the least interesting, grey stone walls and corridors. Not like exploring through Krat

Just done that boss fight you mentioned. I'm just using these NPC summons for the bosses. It's funny but ever since Dark Souls 1, over the countless souls-likes I have done, I always dread the bosses. My first run through if there's any kind of summoning available, I'll use it. |
