How long did it take you do you think? Maybe took 9 hours ? I think it can be beat a lot faster however, but I never rush games as I want to "soak" them up and enjoy.

Duffmangb Might have to give that a go then. Although Hellblade 2 is what i have planned next, so maybe need a break before another walking sim. That was my last completion, I think I enjoyed Still Water more though, albeit they are different experiences. My next completions are likely to be Alone in the dark, last chapter with the scouse bird! and Rise of the Ronin, although I have a long way to go with that I think.

That’s a really good run time. I like to take my time through as well and sounds like this is worth going slowly.
Dammit I’m not helping myself

Bit of a roll here, 2 completions in 2 days! Alone in the Dark (xbox) Skill: Easy Time: 11h 30m Cheveo's: 25/38 I played through Emily's campaign, I may do Edwards at a later date but apparently there is very little difference in the two, so I am not so sure, although just seen I have unlocked NG+ with some bonuses. It was ok but something was a little off, be it the character models or the environments. It was as though the areas you were in were "stages" a bit like when you watch a film and know that you are watching a "set" and not the real place, not sure if that makes sense! I also thought the sound was poor, be it the soundtrack or sound effects, they were too loud and tinny. Story was ok, gunplay better than I had read it was, monster design, not great and the final boss fight made me laugh out loud when I found out it was a walking tree-monster
!!! I bought it for £25, happy that I did not pay the rrp of £50 and the fact I made it to the end means it did its job...just. 5/10

I paid £40 for alone in the dark few months ago, glad I could sell it to get another game
Still wakes the deep
It has the game play of a standard "walking sim" but its the story mixed with the cosmic horror and the main character reacting to the plot. I think its the best walking sim of 2024 as you don't need hellblade 2 budget to make these games, as the game focuses on the story. Its great game to play on gamepass as sort of game you play 1 (or twice if you want all the achievements)
4/5

Another one for Still Wakes The Deep here
5/5
I thoroughly enjoyed it. If it wasn't for a £1 offer on gamepass I would never have tried it.
A walking simulator, but one which doesn't slow your walking down to a painful crawl when it wants to deliver story. You have almost all the movement of a first person shooter and it feels great for it.
Swearing in a Scottish accent never sounded so good. I wish more developers grounded their games in realism like this one. Great cast of characters and voice acting all around.
Took me almost 6hrs to complete. Seems like a perfect length for this type of game.

Crow Country - 9/10
Much like Signalis, Crow Country is an inspired labour of love dedicated to PS1 era survival horror games, right down to the aesthetic. You play as Mara Forest, a special agent investigating the disappearnce of the owner of an abandoned amusement park, Edward Crow. After making your way into the park you discover that it was abandoned for good reason, unshapely sickly monstrosities wander around teeming of bacterial infection. But there's a case to be solved and as you wander into the park you'll discover the history of it and the events that lead up to it's abandonment through notes, posters and items. There are other characters involved too and the game does tell an engaging story that allows you to piece together what's happening before you reach the end. There's no voice acting to speak of, but Mara is a great protaganist, has an air of mystery to her while also showing off some very human moments of being able to crack jokes that add to her charm.
The game itself is played from an isometric perspective in a fully 3D environment and aiming locks you in position, pointing straight in front of her and allows you to aim with the analog stick. You can move with the analog sticks for modern controls while also sticking to tank controls on the D pad, much like the PS1 era survival horror games it's paying homage to. Modern controls worked best for me, you have a good degree of control and you can walk around the environment and running past enemies with ease. Combat is pretty straightforward, enemies can racket up the tension by moving erratically and quickly while others prove a different kind of challenge. You follow traditional survival horror tropes of completing objectives to find key items which allows further progression into other areas. Finding key items can affect the state of the world in that new enemies and traps will be added, making you engage in that balance of avoiding enemies for conserving ammo with the knowledge that things can get harder for you if you return.
I played on the hard difficulty as it seemed more in tune with what I personally wanted from a survival horror. The default difficulty has an in game hint system to help out with puzzle solutions, ammo and health pickups can be found in a lot of places and you can return to the car at any point to restock on ammo if needed. Hard difficultly removes these options plus makes ammo and health items more scarce. Though with that said, I thought it was perfectly fine, I died maybe twice overall and that balance of just having enough ammo was perfect. That said, I think it's great that the game has these options for everyone to get through the 6 hr experience.
I also really liked the PS1 aesthetic they were evoking. Character models aren't that far off from looking like the OG FF7 models and it's a treat to go into it and realise that what you may think is a pre rendered environment is actually fully 3D and definitely has an appealing art direction. Amnesia : The Bunker and Signalis remains the best survival horror games in recent memory and Crow Country can stand easily among them.

I will definitely be getting Still Wakes The Deep. Avoiding any info on it as much as possible, aside from vibes. So glad it's gone down well here. Chinese Room are amazing devs - absolutely love their games.

Yeah, that's what's putting me off starting it or Hellblade 2 now. They feel like wintery games for the shorter days, not something to play when you have to pull the blinds closed to see what's going on on the screen.

I will, however, wait until the weather has at least turned shite again before I play it.
I've got a physical copy arriving today because it seems like one of the games that I want to go through the ceremony of actually opening a box and taking a disc out. That sounds stupid I know but buying digitally, much like music, doesn't resonate with me the same way. It becomes less of a "thing". I did the same with System Shock. Had to have a boxed copy.

I get it. I still buy around 3-5 cd's per month, even with various streaming services. Maybe it is an age thing ?

Probably. It's why I moved to vinyl. Just feels like it kind of resonates a bit more and I appreciate it more having it physically.

God of War Ragnarok (6.5/10)
A bit late to the party on this one, but I finished this over the weekend.
While it was exceptionally well made, which is a given for most of Sonys output, it wasn't a patch on the first game. Weaker story, weaker bosses, it all felt quite rushed at times.
When Ragnarok finally happened, I expected to see some epic battle scenes like we had in GOW3 some 14 years ago. What we got though was a bid of a damp squid and felt completely rushed. There was no sense of scale and you couldn't see anyone fighting at all.
Finding the mask with Atreus was also completely pointless and that storyline didn't actually end up going anywhere. It's almost like there are huge chunks of the story missing.
Not sure why this one fell flat, it made me want to play the originally trilogy again tbh.

Another one here, I've been slowly collecting my favourite albums of all time on vinyl for about 2.5 years. I just woke up one day and decided I missed physical media. I don't know where it came from 😀

This is somewhat unusual for me these days but I've managed to finish several games these last couple of weeks, though admittedly they were all fairly short.
Return of the Obra Dinn
I can't believe it took me this long to finally play this but I was always worried I would not like it as much as everyone else seemed to and/or that I wouldn't be clever enough to enjoy it. Truth be told, I definitely wasn't able to solve every fate without looking at a guide but I still found most of them by myself and, more importantly, I had a really great time.
This really is a fantastic game and one thing in particular I want to highlight is its superb soundtrack and how well it is synced with the game, it immediately reminded me of Lucas Pope's previous game, Papers Please, and how the animated title would move up and down to the beat of the music. RotOD definitely has a lot more of this kind of stuff and, for some reason, my brain finds this extremely satisfying.
Duck Detective
This is a very short but also quite delightful game in which, as you might expect from its title, you play a duck who's also a detective (or a detective who happens to be a duck depending on your point of view). It also happens to have a dedicated quack button and if that doesn't sell you on the game, I don't know what could...
Attentat 1942
This was a really interesting experience (I can't really call it a game to be honest) based on what happened following the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich in 1942 during the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia. It uses a mix of historical footage and photos as well as a fair bit of FMV. I'll admit to not knowing much about this previously but I've learned quite a lot thanks to the developer's willingness to explore this particular time and place.
Night Book
I really enjoy FMV games in general and this one, which is more horror-themed, was fairly good. I think it clicked with me mainly because the character you're playing is an interpreter and that used to be my dream job (though I probably would have enjoyed being a translator as well). She even speaks the same languages (English and French) I would have if life had not taken me to a completely different road.
In terms of criticism I would argue it's not always clear how the choices you make define which ending you reach. I had to look at a guide to get all of them and I have to say, one in particular is genuinely shocking and disturbing, I did not expect it at all.
The Alters Demo
Last but definitely not least, I think this game is going to be something special. I don't want to spoil anything so if you haven't tried the demo, I would highly recommend that you check it out.

Finished Roadwarden. Stellar game. Took me 24h in total. Most of the outcomes were to my liking, but I forgot one guy at his post and unfortunately didn't save an addict.
It's a bit sad to see their new game uses more illustration. I think it's only detrimental for such a game. But I guess it's more popular in the end, so economically, it might make sense.
I think it would have been cool to be able to re-read the whole game including all your decisions as a single big text file. Maybe even print it as a short novella. I know a few people who don't play games, but would probably read this novella about the adventures and hardships of a Roadwarden in an untamed land far in the north.
