One thing I do like ACG reviews, even if gets a review code, he buys a code and gives it away as he pays for the game. Too often reviewers get a code and they don't think is it worth the money

Yeah as said it's ACG and skillup for me every time. Don't really need to see too many other reviews although skillup does sometimes have very different tastes to me.

The way skillup says "Gamers!" at the beginning of his videos makes me want to throw stuff at the TV. Aside from that he's usually pretty spot on with reviews.

The EG review uses the term 'Meta...' 8 times. Absolute scenes.

Can't do video reviews - gives half the fun away.
Still a sad twat who'll only read reviews for games, film and the like.

ACG is the only one I take seriously - although he sometimes rambles a bit with nonsensical witterings.

I am a bit wary about Remedy's writing. I remember the bit after the (pretty disappointing imo) Ashtray Maze in Control, where you've gone through the whole sequence with the Remedy house band playing a shit Nu Rock thing in the background. And after it's all done the main character goes "That. Was. Awesome!" I actually though that was very funny, as it was so on the nose and so engineered to echo how most players would feel at that moment after the sheer out-of-the-blue surprise of the Ashtray Maze. There's an arch tongue-in-cheekness to Control that really works for me, and that's a good example of its silly playfulness. I do agree with you more generally, though, about Remedy's writing. It's often not as clever as they think it is.

Thing with Remedy's writing is it mostly is quite bad, but they are playing with tropes that excuse it. Max Payne's painful similies are over the top and complete nonsense, in the style of the hard-boiled fiction shown in its graphic novels; Alan Wake is about a subpar, but popular, writer and the plot mimics this; Control is like a Darin Morgan episode of The X-Files.
Maybe it all is just bad writing, but it is certainly plays up its pulp style in a way that I really like.

But it the context of video game writing in general, it’s alright. Still hard to find a good story in this medium, besides last of us I have a hard time finding anything that stuck with me.

There's some great writing out there but it tends to be locked into a few specific genres and indie titles. Few and far between, though.

It's a bit of an elitist review tbh (or one that's attempting to be). The writing (so far) suits what they are trying to achieve. We are in an era of unsubtlety, across all creative media. Part of that I feel is because there is such a glut of EVERYTHING out there that creators can't afford to be so subtle in their narratives and themes because our attention span is shorter. Also, let's not forget that games are a business and are designed to be accessable to the masses. There's nothing to be gained by appealling to the minority that would understand and appreciate more obscure references and plot beats. I genuinely don't have a problem with the writing in AW or this one so far. It suits the game and the story they are telling.

You're dead right, and Max Payne is the one that really works for me - where they just go all in on the pulpy noir style, and it's all the better for it (doesn't Payne himself at one point say so much for being subtle?). Anyway, you inspired me to look up some quotes, there are some real beauties: Collecting evidence had gotten old a few hundred bullets back. I was already so far past the point of no return I couldn't even remember what it looked like when I had passed it.No minotaur lurked in this labyrinth, but somewhere out there, on the clanking deck of his cargo freighter, the skipper of the Charon was waiting, like the ferryman of the River Styx.
Snow was falling like ashes from post-apocalyptic skies, but that was outside. Things would soon get hot in the Don's restaurant.

It might just be because I'm really picky and have a good idea of if I'll like something by this point but I can't think of the last time I was swayed by a review for a game. I'll see what people make of it on here if it's something I'm interested in, then maybe watch a video review without paying much attention to the voice over, just to get a look at the game. Find most of the popular video reviews (ACG, SkillUp) annoying. Why do they both put the score/verdict in the video title now?
I don't really understand people reading reviews of games they're already playing, usually just to get annoyed about it not getting the score they think it should

I like Skill Up - he's thoughtful and erudite, and even though I don't always agree with his views, I appreciate the manner in which he conveys them.
ACG can be a bit over the top with the wacky, zany, talking-really-fast stuff, but I generally enjoy his content as well.
Give me either of them over, say, Angry Joe any day of the week.
In all honesty, though, I don't tend to base purchasing decisions on reviews anymore; indeed, the more interested I am in a given game, the less likely I am to watch/read a review. Whatever YouTube content I watch is mainly for entertainment purposes.
Nowadays, I put way more stock in what you guys (and Bichii!) say than any other source of internet opinions, although I do respect a small number of traditional reviewers (e.g. Robert Ramsey from Push Square) as well.

I seem to have regressed these days. Back in the mists of time I would buy a game based on screenshots on the back of the box. I essentially do that now. Couple of trailers, a few screens and a basic description and I’ll buy it.
Which is, going by a large proportion of my purchases this year, a massive mistake.
Meh.

I'm not sure how anyone can moan about remedy writing. Gaming writing in AAA games is mostly dog shit and so remedy for me is actually one of the better studios, there are better written games sure but remedy's dialogue between the characters is better than most. (Low bar)

I mean the writing in the Max Payne games weren't exactly sophisticated but I guess that was the point with its take on the hard boiled genre so it's a fair criticism. However it was incredibly difficult to get through all the pretentiousness of the EG review which would fail most assessments of what a review is.

Skill Up is my go to now. Generally objective, and transparent with his personal likes and dislikes. Tends to cover the things I want to know.
Recently discovered Luke Stephens who seems decent too. Sometimes AngryJoe for a laugh…
EG are definitely hit and miss. Depends on the reviewer. Sometimes it feels like they pick the ‘wrong’ person to review the game from their roster, or mark games down heavily for relatively minor things. Subjective I know.
However, I thought their Starfield and ToTK reviews were pretty much on the money.
Anyway got Alan Wake remaster and Control downloading.

(Low bar) Agreed. At the very least, it is interesting and memorable. For most games, particularly AAA games, it is at best perfunctory. Even when the dialogue is "bad", I think Remedy are doing it with purpose. I can see why that might grate for some, but I love it.

I really don’t bother with reviews anymore for anything. I get a general sense from here and Twitter when someone is probably worth playing/seeing/listening to and beyond that I’ll make my own mind up.

I did read the EG review after seeing the convo here and my issue with it is that it really told me nothing about the game. I’m no wiser on what it is or does after reading than I was before.
The reviewer says that Saga has a “Control-style weapons system” and Alan has “light mechanics”. I think they are the only two references to gameplay in the entire article, and it doesn’t bother to explain what either mean.

Do people really need mechanics spelt out for them? I've never played Alan Wake and I know it's a horror game and you shine a torch on enemies and then shoot them. I don't think one review has to cover every single thing about the game. You can read another review for that stuff or the gameplay section of Wikipedia if you've really never heard of Alan Wake before
