Preferably something that came out in 2021, but it's acceptable to be something that you saw for the first time in 2021. Be nice to include a word or two on why. 3..2..1..go!

Dune
Hadn't seen the David Lynch version. Loved Blade Runner but hated 2049. Came in with low expectations but it blew me away. Matrix 4 is out soon but I really don't see it matching these heights.
Honorable mention to King Richard and Judas and the Black Messiah though.

Shit loads of indie horror films. The last dual is amazing. The green night, no time to die also great films

I’ve only seen four new releases this year. Shang-Chi was the best of them.
The other three were Black Widow, Army of the Dead and Home Sweet Home Alone so I think my top pick is valid

I'll be honest. I haven't seen a lot of movies recently because of, you know, Covid. I guess Dune is my answer even though I did have some small issues with it.

I haven't seen Dune yet, but even if I had I still think I'd give my "best thing I've seen this year" to Pig. It's subtle, emotional, and unironically one of the best Nic Cage performances in years.
I liked The Green Knight a lot too, but it was just a teensy bit too far on the pretentious side for me.

I also haven’t seen many new films. But my joint favourites are Schang Chi and The Sound of Metal.

Jeez, either Godzilla vs Kong or Jungle Cruise. Should perhaps watch Shang-Chi before years end.

Another shout for Dune, just for its epicness.
Easily the best cinematography and sound design I've seen (and heard) in ages.

According to my Letterboxd diary the only 2021 films I’ve watched are The Mauritanian, Moxie and Framing Britney Spears.
The Mauritanian it is then.
Best film I watched for the first time this year is one of The Prestige, The Florida Project, Parasite and Zootopia.

Watched at the cinema? Dune or Riders of Justice. Both very different films but I did see Riders twice at the cinema and enjoyed it as much the second time as the first.
Renting/Streaming: Quo Vadis,Aida? was excellent, though a tough watch.
Hoping to see Censor soon and (hoping) that may make my shortlist too.

It's not like there was an abundance of first-run movies available for streaming though. And then, that list would be further pared down to first-run movies available for streaming that I actually wanted to watch.

Another vote for Pig.
Dune was very average.

Yeah, I pretty much only watched WB films this year since they streamed day and date on HBOMax. Also Mulan, Shang Chi and Black Widow, but I waited for their general release rather than the earlier premium access. I haven't been the theatres once in about two years.

Same, love and monsters was surprisingly good fun. Although Dune is of course the "grown up" choice.

Forgot to add Another Round to my films. Streamed rather than cinema but really thought it was another cracking Mads Mikkelsson movie.

Darkest Hour was the best movie I’ve seen this year.
Movies more literally FROM this year, Black Widow, Eternals, Shang-Chi and No Time To Die, Shang-Chi gets the award.

Dune. Suitably epic, gorgeous visuals, felt like a really grounded take on a totally wacky fantasy world (like LOTR did). I stan Villenuve at the best of times but this was just great.
Other than that: Shang-Chi, Palm Springs, and Mitchells vs the Machines.

I loved Dune, but I'm leaning towards picking No Time To Die over it. Dune was amazing 'in the moment', but it didn't actually have as lasting an impact as I expected. No Time to Die was flawed in many ways, but I got invested in it and it left more of a lasting impression.
Those are the only 2 I watched in the cinema this year, but I watched like 100 random old / indie films at home and I need to think back and see which ones were great.
Palm Springs was surprisingly excellent. Show Me Love was fun. Hmm...

Palm Springs was the only movie I saw for the first time in 2021 that I would consider at least "Actually good-good". In fact it's one of my favourite movies, it's just spot-on for me. So I guess that's my nomination.
I think every other movie I've seen for the first time has been between "Meh..." and "Yeah pretty good". I haven't seen Dune or really anything at the cinema. I'm probably forgetting something though.
I still haven't watched a bunch of stuff I keep meaning to, like The Green Knight.

I haven't seen it yet but I feel like Benedetta would be my movie of the year.
This quote from an ebert.com review sums up why
"He makes his fascination with the body and its functions evident early as two characters have a sort of romantic moment after defecating next to one another. It’s actually even earlier than that when a bird shits in a man’s eye and a stage show features a man lighting his farts."
