Did you have enough friends for splitscreen? That's where it really shone.
Remember my mates 10th birthday party and he got an N64, Goldeneye and the WWF game for it. We absolutely rinsed that game.

System Shock came out 3 years before GoldenEye, unless you meant the sequel Never really understood all the fuss about GoldenEye. Doesn't it have really weird aiming that isn't locked to the camera and always snaps back to the centre? I never liked that Ah my bad I thought it was after. Must have been thinking of sequel. Yeah I think that's to compensate for the lack of mouse/keyboard and only having one stick.

My overriding memory of GoldenEye is playing the level on a boat while listening to Foo Fighters' There Is Nothing Left to Lose
Don't no friends shame me

My favourite memories from multiplayer GoldenEye was raining down terror as Baron Samedi, armed with nothing but a one-hit kill slap, while my friends pannicked klobb fire did them no good at all.

I never liked that There's quite strong auto-aiming, likely because you only had the one stick so couldn't properly target enemies, but I think you can more or less turn everything off on the Xbox and play it like a conventional shooter. You could always hold one of the bumpers to aim manually, which was the 1997 equivalent of aiming down sights I suppose.

Proximity mines in the Facility toilets to spawn kill your friends 😊
And the Xbox version drops the snap back aiming. There’s still a bit of aim assist, but the right stick is free aim like any modern FPS

In a world without Dual Analog sticks the control system was a pretty good attempt to make an FPS work on console.
4 player splitscreen was a blast, but I actually think the SP campaign was really good too.
It was much closer to the story driven linear FPS campaigns that came later, inspired laregly by it and half-life, than to things that came before like doom/quake.
It was also a lot about using cover and the environment, and sniping enemies behind cover, things that didn't really exist in most FPS of the time. Plus the realistic environment, realistic (for the time) enemies, etc.. Needing / Being able to shoot the padlock off the gate was pretty cool at the time.
I mean, it basically set the stage for Halo's combat model of recharging shields and needing to use cover/crouch etc.. plus swapping in and out weapons, which all became mainstays of console shooters because they were the only way to deal with the limitations of the controller. Plus it being pretty darn cinematic.

I remember the first real "that's not normal" reaction back in the day when you had to "power down" the communication dish in Severnaya. So obviously I shot the console in there to make it explode and it failed the objective. Failed? Up to that point the only way I'd seen to fail FPS games was to die...
Also particular great thing was in MP you could shoot the weapon pickups and it would actually move the pickup spawn along with it. So in Complex you could shoot them in more difficult to reach places (under those ramps) and use that to shoot people breaking their stride to get the pickup...

Probably wouldn’t happen, but I’d love to see Rare get the Bond license again once the next actor is cast. I don't think there is anybody left at Rare that worked on Goldeneye? Perhaps one or two of them. The rest of the gang are working on a new TimeSplitters though. And I don't mean that fan project that has been in development for a billion years.

Wwf no mercy, wwf wrestlemania 2000 and wcw revenge were the pinnacle of 4 player living room gaming. Aki are sorely missed ☹️

Who made that Royal rumble game? Or maybe it was a mode in one of those games. I remember if a CPU performed a move that ended with a pin, you were stuck in that pin permanently

Bloody awful - the game had maybe two modes? Still, seeing 9 or 10 people in a ring at a time was pretty impressive.

Fired up the Switch to have a blast on this but you have to have the online membership plus expansion? Really? I'd happily pay a tenner for the game alone but not £30 odd quid.
Am I missing something or does Nintendo really want to bend me over?

Saying I barely turn the bloody thing on these days they can fuck right off at that price.
Fine if you already have the service but its steep for something I'd probably play for a couple of hours before the rose tinted glasses wore off.
Shame they haven't done a standalone option, but nintendo gonna nintendo I guess.

You can't buy it seperately on Xbox either. Not entirely sure why its subscription based, but I can definitely see it being removed from both services eventually.

I keep going backwards and forwards about getting Nintendo Online.
It looks reasonable if you look at the headline individual user price, and then you realize you need the family plan, and then you realise they have some stupid higher level version for n64 games and Mario Kart 8 and by the time you're finished you're looking at a ridiculous price for a service that *doesn't even have bloody voice chat*
If it had voice chat built in (smart device version is dumb enough to be irrelevant) and nintendo had sane parental controls then I might grudgingly pay for it.

A few of us on the switch thread got together and do the family offer. Think if you have 5-8? Of you it works out as a tenner for the year give or take. That's one way of doing it if enough of you are thinking about it.

I suspect doing it across multiple countries might be asking for trouble though... and I don't know enough people here who have switches The value proposition is made worse by the fact that the switch is 80% used for Fortnite and Fall Guys, and those all work fine without Nintendo Online and already include proper voice chat. So it'd be mainly paying for Goldeneye, plus the ability to trade Pokemon and play Minecraft on the Switch without proper voice chat. And the voice chat thing is the killer. The main users would be my kids, playing with their mates, and the idea that for them to chat they'd need to borrow my phone every time is ridiculous and would lead to massive amounts of stress.

I'm not sure on the cross region. You just get a email invite from whoever sets it up. Be worth you sticking something in the switch stuff thread. There was enough people for two family subs and may be others that want to do the same.
I have to say since I got it I hardly use it, N64 games are rough, I have a pi for all my emulation stuff. So don't think I would do it again unless they added gamecube or if I got another family sub again.

I already have an n64 emulator on my Wii, which works great for stuff like Mario64 or Mario Kart 64... but the Wii isn't quite up to emulating Goldeneye with a decent framerate (and apparently neither are the Switch or Xbox lol) and it doesn't work well with multiplayer. I'll stop derailing the thread with my Nintendo Online rants now

It's been handy for me, as my Sis is thinking getting it for my niece and nephew under the assumption that voice chat was included. I'll let her know it isn't. I reckon it'll get primarily used for Minecraft, Roblox, Fall Guys & Gang Beasts.

My US account (had to have ine as I imported 3DS) works fine with our family plus expansion UK pass.

I reckon it'll get primarily used for Minecraft, Roblox, Fall Guys & Gang Beasts. Fall Guys doesn't need Nintendo Online, it all goes through the Epic account.
Roblox isn't on Switch (much to my surprise, though I think they're working on it).
Technically, voice chat *is* included, but it's done through the companion smartphone app, which is weird. Plus it means you can't use headphones on the switch.
The basic deal seems to be that Free2Play games don't need Nintendo Online for online multiplayer, but any Paid game needs you to pay for Nintendo Online.
Some games (like Fortnite, Fall Guys) have ignored the weird Nintendo voice chat system and implemented their own, but I'm not sure which ones those are. Not Minecraft and probably not Gang Beasts.
There's usually a 2 week free trial of Nintendo Online that comes with the Switch, plus they do occasional other 1 week free trials, so it might be worth trying to see if it works for her family.

I've said this in another thread but trying to play this on switch has just made me appreciate playing it on my steam deck via the 1964 GEPD emulator so much more. It was a bit of a hassle putting it on the deck but it's still easier than trying to get a moderately OK result on the Switch. It also doesn't work well with the hori split pad pro, which you can't save controller profiles on. So I'm playing goldeneye and perfect dark at 60fps with improved textures instead.

You’ve been able to do online multiplayer in emulators for decades now. Local multiplayer since the year dot.
