Don't think I have changed anything since the last issues, we had the ISP who said it was our router to which I thought bullshit because it was a brand new 150 quid router but sure enough after changing back to the old one it's been good since so haven't changed anything. And the issue of the internet dropping turned out to be a cord that doesn't like being touched with your feet of all things.
It's almost as if it is an app thing, for instance we can watch youtube via the website direct but open it in an app and it says no, actually may try to see if we can use them on the laptops which don't need an app.
I'll have a look into changing the DNS like you say if it doesn't fix itself but have to get the work/school day out of the way first, it also could be the ISP. In doing the speed tests I found we now get double than what we normally get, it's possible they upgraded us yesterday but no way of telling unless we contact them.
Edit, the missus is on Teams right now with no issues.
Double edit: Definitely app related and probably not the wifi, has appeared to have fixed itself so maybe an ISP issue.

Microsoft Edge shortcut reappearing for anybody else? Appeared earlier this week: deleted it. Appeared again today: goodbye. Classic Microsoft.

Yeah, read something about that earlier and noticed it on my last W10 device at home. You can go into task scheduler and disable a couple of things that apparently stop it, but I'd just leave it to get sorted out eventually.

Happened on my PC and laptop today as well, will have to dip into AutoRuns and have a look.

This is probably a daft question but I couldn’t find the right words to Google it
Mrs hedben currently uses a crappy cheap Amazon tablet (Fire HD 7 maybe) to stream Netflix or Prime TV upstairs. Recently it’s gone increasingly stuttery and keeps buffering. Everything else on the same upstairs WiFi works perfectly, so we think it’s an issue with this one specific tablet.
Question is, what attribute do I look for to know that something’s good for HD streaming? It’s basically going to be used for Netflix and nothing else, but she’s campaigning for an iPad because they’re “reliable” and I don’t know how to demonstrate that a cheaper Android one will have the same streaming ability for half the price, because I don’t know what stat to look for.

Tell her we said she should just buy her own iPad and ignore you

The answer is almost always "buy an iPad" when it comes to tablets.

Entry level iPads are pretty cheap, and they contain fast chips. Especially if she won’t be using it for much more than streaming. Get her the iPad.

Another shout for iPad here. They really are the nuts in that market.

Yeah I know, buy cheap buy twice. It just stings when the marketing is “it’s got a great pencil! Use it for mood boards! Use it for your job! Use the amazing camera to make movies! Play games!” and the actual use case is basically “can it internet good?”

If it makes you feel any better, iPads are used on average for 5-6 years, so are one of the best value gadgets you can get.
My iPad pro is six years old and still going pretty strong. I would only change it because its the last of the phat bezel models (and, yeah, all I use it for is consuming media)

Samsung tablets are either fantastic (S8) or utter dogshit (any of the budget models)
At least with iPads you know what you're getting, and that's coming from an Android user through and through.

I’m amazed things like Fire tablets are still a thing. Every single one I’ve tried has been absolutely awful to use, slow as hell, and out of date and nigh on unusable within 6 months.

*Boring tech question alert* I can't quite get my head around this one... I have a USB-based PC speaker setup. It connects to my PC via a USB A-male > B-male connector. I also want to connect these speakers to my laptop via USB. They do not need to be used simultaneously. I just want a switch situation, or something like that. Would this work?: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B074TYDJK2?th=1e.g. with 3 USB a-b cables Bad diagram time: --- USB a-b cable 2 --- PC SPEAKER --- USB a-b cable 1 --- Sabrent switch --- USB a-b cable 3 --- LAPTOP

Yeah, that'd work. I have a similar one but with 3 USB ports so I can switch keyboard, mouse and speaker when moving between work laptop and my machine.

I have a UGreen one so I can swap my keys, mouse and webcam between work dock and main pc. Has a spare usb for randomly using a usb drive. I got it for like £15 a couple of years ago but it's gone up by a tenner for some reason amzn.eu/d/3bNoyIS

Hmm... see this is where I'm slightly unsure. I could physically connect both yours crash and yours df, but one is USB A connectors only and the other is USB A-B. Is there actually any functional different or is it just ensuring you've got the right cables?

I wouldn't worry too much about the type of cable that goes from the PC to the box. That can vary between devices.
Either one would do the job.

Dunno if it helps much but I've got that ugreen one mentioned above. I'm using it to share a keyboard, mouse, graphics tablet and another USB hub between a Windows PC and Mac Mini. It's been fine so far (about 16 months).
I guess a USB 3 one might be better if you intend on sharing anything else like hard drives or USB sticks.
Are the speakers powered externally?

Not really a tech support question, but feels it isn't worth creating a new thread for.
I've an 8bitdo sn30 pro+ controller. Last night the left analogue stick cap suddenly ripped. I want to pick up a replacement, which you can get direct from 8bitdo for about £2.50, but with $6 delivery and a 18-30 day wait. It isnt that much, but I'm loathed to pay more on delivery than on the item, especially when the delivery is going to have such a long wait.
Amazon also has a listing for the same caps, but they are unavailable.
Does anyone have any recommendations of a place that will sell them (preferably UK based) or some good alternatives? I don't mind getting different ones, as long as they are good.
Edit - ended up finding some on Amazon that were listed as for PlayStation/Xbox controllers. Turns out the 8bitdo sticks are a bit smaller. They go on, but slide around and feel a bit odd. Not terrible, but certainly not ideal. Probably would have been fine if I had of left the old ones on and put these on over the top, but I tried to get the old ones back on and they just teared even more and wouldn't stay cleanly on.
Will likely just order the official replacement ones from 8BitDo and put up with these ill fitting ones for a month.

I really don't understand what's going on with my laptop wifi. Used to run at 200-250Mbps, now suddenly it's ranging between 4 and 40. Usually on the lower end of that.
Phone wifi is still fast, so I know it's not an ISP problem. Upload speed is fine too.
I've tried changing my settings, switching to 802.11ac, changing DNS, nothing seems to work.
Edit: I see that when it uses 2.4Ghz, it runs better. Only, despite diabling all 5Ghz options in my wifi settings, it still switches to 5Ghz when it can. How do I tell this thing to only use 2.4Ghz?

Can you separate the signals into 2 WiFi names malek86? I split them up and have a 2g and a 5g and connect separately to whichever one I like. Helps when you have devices that must be on 2g like washing machine etc.

Kind of sounds like a power management setting, in every wifi driver there’s a bunch of kinda hidden options.

Or if you don't want to use different SSIDs, you could try using MAC address filtering if your router supports it in different bands. Set it to block the laptop's MAC on 5GHz.
I would've thought the other way around would be true, though. You should be getting better speeds on 5GHz, not worse. (unless your signal is awful)
