A bit like when Disney bought Fox, I'm trying to mitigate how this feels like a positive for me personally (X-Men in the MCU! Tony Hawk on GP!) with the fact that acquisitions on this scale can't be good for the industry as a whole.
Having said that, at least with MS it means exclusives will still be as broadly available as can be whilst still being an "exclusive" (which is to say, basically everywhere but on PlayStation). But it's more the fact that so much stuff is under one roof. Will it lead to redundancies and franchises falling by the wayside? I hope not.
I do hope, though, that it'll see the back of Kottick and have a positive change in the culture over there.

The thing is, I suppose, that they arent up against sony. They are up against valve, epic game store and so on and so forth. Xbox is a service now as much as anything else.
If CoD is exclusive to Game Pass, you can still play it on PC, Mobile, Tablet, your fridge........ They havent bought Activision to sell consoles, they bought it to sell subscriptions.

I'm not sure why they'd want to play up that side of the perception of the Xbox brand so heavily. If they want to focus on their platforms being perceived as the COD/Halo/Gears online services/micro-transaction boxes it's inadvertently doing a lot of us a favour.
Consolidating that audience and sector of the market in one place could create more room for the other platforms to specialise in better serving particular niches. The other possible outcome is that it can all go wrong and you just end up with Sony trying to compete for that most lucrative sector which further narrows variety in the AAA space.
But if you don't really care about AAA games it's not going to effect you much either way.

I don't think they'll make CoD exclusive to game pass. For a start Halo isn't. I don't even think it will exclusive at all. It's just too much money to drop.
It will probably be on Game Pass first and have extra content and that's about it.
The smaller franchises though, they're going to be gobbled whole.

Glad I topped up 3 years worth recently because this sounds like a price hike incoming.

Wish they spent some money sorting out the shitty PC Xbox app.

As a PlayStation owner who can't afford to buy an Xbox as well, I'm much less disappointed by this news than I was about the Zenimax acquisition; after all, I wanted to get Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI, whereas the only game I own with Activision's name on it is Sekiro.
Still, something about this just feels... off. Yeah, Microsoft lost the last console generation due to a paucity of exclusive games, and I can't fault them for attempting a drastic course correction, but where does it stop? Are they going to snap up Ubisoft and Square Enix as well?
Please, Phil, don't buy FromSoft. Be a bro.

Just occurred to me we're in for months of "will CoD be on PlayStation" debate aren't we?

Like Nick said its the long term vision for them going the Netflix games route rather than selling consoles. They're positioning themselves for the future.

But as the OP said, will it actually happen? Schreier doesn't think so, for what it's worth:

Yeah it doesn't at all. MS are just taking the piss now. It's bigger than just pointless console wars when one company is just actively scooping up entire publishers like they're penny sweets. At this point MS are just outspending the competition, It's not going to lead to anything good. Depending on your view of content farms, this approach hasnt hurt disney and the fans seem quite happy that their output is pretty prolific now. A not inconsiderable amount are fairly unhappy too though. I think it's a bit different anyway. Disney aren't really taking away anything from anyone else when they buy up studios. Maybe in terms of streaming services, but there are so many players already there. In some cases Disney probably don't even have much of a hands on approach with some IP's they own. I don't think it works the same way in gaming. This is MS taking ownership, they'll have direct involvement and they just bought 2 massive publishers within the industry. Everything ends up under their banner, and they end up controlling large parts of the market. Even Disney can't say they do that. Consolidate it all onto their services, offer a deal/service others can't possibly compete with, and watch the competition dry up. It's just more walled gardens I also don't like things under one banner because the consolidation can also lead to every game having to follow certain formulas or meet certain criteria, and it ends up feeling a bit same-y and creatively bankrupt. Sort of like how you know what you're going to get with a Disney movie. I like seeing fresh ideas and chances taken, maybe Activision aren't the ones to do that anyway, but the next studio MS buy could be and that's only a matter of time. Cappy I don't know, MS aren't just buying AAA studios. They also bought Double Fine not long back. Not to mention Obsidian, and Arkane (though they're probably AAA now) I just don't like where it could lead. MS owning too much is rarely a good sign. It's hardly done with good intent and I don't see much good coming from it from a game design standpoint.

If it was going to make them the biggest then it would be more of a question. They'll look at it and probably ask for some changes but I think it might go through now.

Please, Phil, don't buy FromSoft. Be a bro.
You've got to expect that offers have been made, both by Microsoft and Sony. Sony have more history with them, what with Demon's Souls and Bloodborne, so I'm sure there must have been conversations. If I remember rightly, Phil also mentioned having seen Elden Ring a while back, which set off a whole bunch of speculation. From Software probably aren't quite able to name their price, but they must have been sent some very tempting offers.

The other way to look at this is that if Kotick and co. were looking for an exit, if it wasn't Microsoft it would've been someone else. Taking the platform exclusivity argument aside for a moment, imagine it's ActiBlizz + Ubisoft, for example. Not much better from a creative bankruptcy point of view. That said, almost literally no other fucker could pony up that sort of cash.

Makes me miss the days when console gaming was (comparatively) small companies like Sega and Nintendo, with no agenda other than making and selling games.

ActiBlizzard has been creatively bankrupt for years now. They only produce CoD or Warzone these days and games like WoW have been left to die with no invest and senior interference.
We might actually get some RTS games for once.

I wouldn't be at all surprised.
The thing is, I don't even want Sony to buy From - yes, I'd prefer that to Microsoft buying them, for purely selfish reasons, but I like having some devs make multiplatform games, goddammit!
Damn you, Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots. Can't we all just get along?

The chain has well and truly started. It's just going to be shitflinging but instead of shit everyone's going to be flinging their latest acquisition at each other.
Let's not forget Tencent too, they've got a stake in many publishers.

Just occurred to me we're in for months of "will CoD be on PlayStation" debate aren't we? DAMN YOU MICROSOFT! Yes, MS like money too much. End. But that's what everyone said when they bought Bethesda. They might prefer to keep all the games "on platforms where Game Pass is available". I'd put it 70-30 in favour of "never being on PlayStation" but who knows, really?

I mean I've not bought an Activision/Blizzard game in forever but fuck me that's big news. What big(ish) publishers are left standing now? Squenix, Sega, Capcom, Ubisoft
Slim pickings.
