Not really surprising, there will be loads of roles that are double filled now that won't be necessary in the new structure.

Doesn't seem so bad? But in wider context, the number of job losses in dev studios now is around half of the total of all last year. And it's not even the end of Jan

Embracer are contributing rather heavily to the numbers though.

And it's not even the end of Jan I guess companies are rushing to lay people off before the end of the fiscal year. Chances are (with some optimism) that it won't be as bad in the following months. Then again, optimism is rarely rewarded these days.

At least the layoffs are handled with good grace and decorum...

The big tech layoffs of 2024 have begun. Going to be a fun few months for anyone in tech without job security. Hopefully that doesn't apply to anyone here.

I was listening to Patrick Boyle who was saying that its probably not *quite* as scary as it seems. The bloodbaths are all in things that have had wild expansions and VC money thrown at them. Startups are blowing up all over the place and people are now wanting a return on acquisition funding. But outside of that the job market is relatively buoyant so as shit as it is, if you get the nail you should be able to pick something up relatively quickly.
Obviously he was talking about 'tech' more generally, I wouldn't want to be in a narrow games furrow and suddenly have 2k people flood into the job market.

Activision's support was an absolute joke so I'm not sure where the rep came from.

The one time I ever had to contact Activision support they dealt with it pretty quickly so I'm one satisfied customer. In my case it was the phone I had my Google Authenticator on died, couldn't find the back up codes and therefore couldn't login to my Activision account, it was quickly sorted out in a matter of hours.
Pro tip for everyone - don't use Google Authenticator as it's a steaming pile of shit, use Authy or Microsoft instead in case your phone dies/gets lost.

I'm assuming by countries abroad they mean India. That where my mates job ended up, Centrica canned a load of jobs at the end of last year and they all popped up on jobsites over there.

The annoying thing reading this stuff apart from obviously the massive amount of people losing their livelihoods is how people still try to console war it. There's absolutely no nuance to it at all. It's fucking shit but there are very clear reasons for this shitshow that pretty much all sectors not just games are going through. I think people have already forgotten that COVID was a thing and they bought and watched so much stuff at a rate that hadn't been seen before ever.

Whizzo hopefully they've sorted it out now, but Google authenticator not doing cloud backups was a bit of a wtf moment years ago. I just factory reset my old phone and assumed everything would be there when I set my new one up. Funnily enough I moved to Authy soon after that experience too.

to save you a click:
Jez Corden (Windows Central): Microsoft has also shut down departments dedicated to bringing Xbox games to physical retail ... which if you've seen the digital-only Xbox console leaks ... well, you can get an idea of where Microsoft is going here.
I know people love their downloads but I will be buying less games as don't want to get stuck with some game that you will never play again. I don't see Xbox doing Steam style refunds (as they don't have to)

But they already do refunds? Also, welcome to 2023

They do refunds but its not the steam style hassle free refunds. Sometimes some prick on MS customer service will close your ticket for no reason

That's a really nasty read.
But everyone needs to remember you can't trust HR. In the end they will protect the company over the employee.

I can't get over how bad an experience Twitter is now. Can't see the rest of that thread (and Nitter instances all seem to be b0rked), but visited his profile and it was sad to see how excited he was to be joining Blizzard, you can see his tweet announcing his promotion to Lead VFX artist, and then – and these are all in the wrong bloody order – discovering from a third-party that remote work was being curtailed.

Brave of him to stick his head above the parapet like this.

Leadership is a lateral move, I have to remember that one. I skipped becoming team leader last year, which also was a case of, you keep your current role, but also manage the people you’ve been working with, make sure all maintenance is done on time and so on. We’ll pay you 50% of the current position and 50% of the new role, which net would have been like €100 extra each month. So they got someone else to do it full time and he barely can keep up. Just say no kids.
