They have probably seen that Sony can release 2 or 3 games a year and make a shitload of money.
Might work out cheaper to pay a studio to put a game on game pass at launch than it is to run one to produce games on it.

In a rather weird bit of timing, Hi-Fi Rush is going to be in next month's Humble Bundle.

Valve makes money releasing a game once every 10 years...

I know PlayStation looks like it's in rude health but their margins have been dwindling of late, as low as they've ever been in over a decade going off the last lot of financials they released a while back. It's all rather bleak. Purely anecdotal obviously but most of the gamers I personally know are still putting the hours in these days, but it's all free to play live service toss, they basically purchase fuck all outside of huge tentpole releases like GTA. A decade ago those same people I know were purchasing games all the time.

This was from 2021
Thing is as easy as it is to shit on the main 3 in charge of Xbox. I do feel this more someone above them from MS that wants that $79b back quickly.

Isnt this going to turn into a death spiral? Who is going to make the games to pay for shareholder dividends in a few years?

Valve makes money releasing a game once every 10 years... Valve makes its money from taking a 30% cut of every game sold on Steam, they're a store that occasionally makes their own stuff for shits and giggles mostly.

Microsoft couldn't go the same route, no one with any sense is buying anything from their absolutely awful PC game store.

If anything they've now ensured their Xbox showcase in a few weeks time is going to be super awkward when they get the studios to talk about their game and how they're investing in games.

This has been happening across the industry and it's really sad, but game development has become hugely expensive and maybe it was inevitable that it would collapse under it's own weight.
I just hope that the talent themselves can find meaningful employment at decent wages. This has been happening across the industry for the last couple of years, nothing like a glut of talented people looking for work to drive wages down.

That's why companies need those studios that can put out quality AA games as well. But no one running these companies seem to see an issue with needing to sell around 8m at full price to make a profit so just keep giving games ridiculous budgets.

It is borderline insane that they don’t just use all that AAA talent to bang out AA and Indie scale games and recreate that golden age of XBLA on the 360.

Hopefully the incredible success of Helldivers 2 which is as AA as it gets and is £35/$40 makes publishers rethink things a bit. Just be a tad more careful after release in not causing some grief to yourself.

This also isn't some plucky publisher looking to cut costs to stay afloat it's Microsoft. They made tens of billions in revenue alone last week.

They really need to shift up a gear, like Ubisoft have, and start making AAAA games.

Last I saw COD had some skin where you could play as a velociraptor so it wouldn't be too far off a change of what COD currently is.

Call of Duty is pretty much Fortnite now, the Cheech & Chong pack came out not long ago.

Yeah it really its own little multiverse now. Whatever aspirations it had about being a military arcade shooter are long gone.

Well not really, it still is an arcade shooter, just with some silly skins.
Game isn't much different to various other years.

I kind of asked a technical sales guy this a while ago. We are, unwisely imho, moving pretty much our entire tech stack to Microsoft, most notably moving our SIEM from splunk to sentinel. We already deal with them randomly changing and dropping features like the Insider Threat Module being locked behind a new subscription and Azure AD changing every time I log into it, so what happens if our entire event management system makes them no money and they just turn it off? I know that’s a risk with every vendor but we definitely increase that risk with every product we move to.

Mike Ybarra defended Spencer
just add the zombieland gif of woody harrelson wiping away his tears with big handfuls of cash there
Its always the hard workers that lose their jobs while the people at the top carry on and probably get a nice bonus still

Spencer's biggest problem over all this is to make sure he never wears any of the t-shirts with one of the closed down studios again while doing yet another video podcast saying how sad it all is but it was beyond his control while doing his fake smile he always uses.
He's just a gamer really, not another corpo prick.

Yes, those 3 couldn't have possibly pushed for the largest purchase in industry history knowing that they would have to make good on said purchase within a specific timeframe. They were obviously also surprised by this news, like us. Because they're our friends. Or...
