I think the first game only has the scare factor for the first hour. Once you know how to navigate the night it vanishes. The second game doesn’t set up night as a barrier as much, more that it’s just different. From the get go it gives you events to do at night.
The 2nd game is generally just better all around from a mechanics standpoint. I’d go straight into this one, personally.

I found the first tense for much longer, personally, though it did wane eventually. I agree that DL2 feels and plays better.
The night mechanic in DL2 makes for a better game experience overall, but I do miss the Volatiles (I just read they appear at chase level 3; I've never gone beyond 2 myself).

I'd say play the first one, for no reason other than it being a lot cheaper right now. And if you like it, sure, pick this one up once you've had your fill.

It's a tough call for me. I think I still prefer DL 1, even though this is a better game, if that makes sense. As has been said, there's definitely more horror in the first one, as well as the first area being a lot better in terms of variety and feel. This one is more video-gamey but conversely more fun because of it. I also like the fact that there's no guns, which I hated in Dead Island, and Dying Light. The melee combat is better in this as well. I liked the air drops in the frist one as well which I haven't seen in this (as the world has gone to shit, that sure as hell explains why there aren't any, but I liked the fact there was a little timed impetuous to get to the drop before bandits did).
Get the Following edition of the first one and there's a hell of a lot of game there.
I actually like the story of this one so far as well, although I'm of the opinion everyone from the bazaar is out to screw me over.

I haven't ramped it up to chase level 4 yet, but 3+ was definitely run for the bazaar stage for me.
More stamina now at lev 2 for that, might me attempt level 4 for the lols.
I am slowly getting the hang of this now i think. Did a windmill and a few side missions last night & think i'm getting to grips with it.
Night time is definitely not as scary as the first game. I had to wait a good few levels there before i dared to venture out at night.

Now done the water tower mission as well which was cool so I managed to choose a faction as well.
Also, does anyone else play with health bars off? Health bars just seem wrong somehow.

No, it never occurred to me you could. Definitely going to turn them off next time I play.

It maybe makes it harder but I just find it a bit more immersive without them.

DL2 is more of a game. Deeper and richer in single player.
DL1 was crazy and fun but best in co op. I can’t even remember progressing the story in it but had great fun with my mate.
He’d dislike DL2 because he’s all about the online co op fun. I prefer single player experiences so DL2 feels much better to me.

Well, this game has got it's bitey viral hooks into me.
Spent a bit of time at work today thinking about it, & that hasn't happened for ages.
About to go sneaking about in a dark zone for inhibitors, not sure how this will go...

Same for me. I couldn't play at all yesterday and kept daydreaming about it. Going to do 2 or 3 hours tonight.

Yeah, the hooks are firmly in. Had a quick blast in my lunch break and then pretty much mainlined it straight after work until midnight. The eastern part of the map has some ridiculous verticality compared to the starting area and traversing it becomes great fun with the equipment unlock. I've still got three other bits of equipment to unlock so the game really drip feeds stuff to you. (although I've only really been dipping into the story then doing loads of side stuff) Did a really enjoyable downtown bandit camp; Started off by using the hang glider to their windmill from a nearby windmill and turning off the power, then laughing manically at the chaos below. Turned the power back on and mopped up any stragglers. Also did the flooded power station which was a nice change of pace.

Do you recall roughly how long after the first water tower it is until you get into the Central Loop, unlock fast travel etc.? It's taking its sweet time but to be fair I'm doing a lot of side missions - try to do 2 or 3 before doing another main mission.

If you just focus on story missions then maybe a couple of hours. I'd recommend it before you get too stuck into side content anyway, as fast travel is bloody handy (if a little limited) and like I said the second map is fun to explore.

Ta. Yeah, I'm getting a little sick of running around the opening areas from one end to another (though the new faction-specific traversal options are handy). I suspect I must only be a mission or so away from it.

I'm having trouble actually using some of the skills I've unlocked. For example, press LB while jumping over an obstacle to get a boost. I've managed to do this from a standing start with a waist-high obstacle right in front of me, but can I do that mid-run? Don't think I've managed to so far.
Then there's the skill immediately after that on the tree - double-tap RB for a longer jump. Is that a double-tap after an initial RB tap to jump, so 3 taps in total, or just one extra tap? Does it have to be directly after doing the LB thing that was the previous skill? The tooltips/videos aren't exactly clear.

Yeah, a lot of the skills are confusingly worded. The stab one uses a throwing knife every time, which could've been clearer and I wouldn't have bothered with it. It's a bit of a confusing mess of tapping and holding various buttons. Wall running can be more of a hindrance than a help too, especially in the second area when you're trying to scale tall buildings and often have to make jumps at an angle.
Slide and slide jump are handy. Anything to do with fall damage should be top priority imo.

Hmm. Pass on both of those, hopefully someone else can help. I've not unlocked either yet. I went for the wall run, the longer falls, the roll upon landing, the running dropkick and the sprint so far in the parkour tree.

I recall that even in the first one though, I couldn't be arsed with the faff on half the skills so I didn't bother. I never even use the vault kick when fighting humans either. I've got a skill that staggers on dodge, so I just do that most of the time.

Yeah, stagger on dodge and block are the main skills to go for on the combat tree. Heavy is good for fuckers who keep their guard up. Think I've used the vault kick move three times since it unlocked in the tutorial.

It basically seems to only work when you vault over an obstacle, i.e. press jump as you physically run into the obstacle then immediately hit LB. Just jumping without vaulting and hitting LB pulls out your weapon.

Yeah, that's what I've found. Bit frustrating when it's so long between unlocks. Can see them patching in quicker upgrading tbh.

The drip feed for unlocks seems pretty intentional so that you'll still be unlocking stuff 30 hours in. At least everything is only one point, so you're not wasting 3 points on a skill you never use. Still a bit frustrating when you get a duff one though.

It is a bit tight though. Like I was clicking the left stick to sprint from the beginning of the game, because what other game gates sprinting behind an unlock.

Great to see others loving it too. It's just so much deeper than we probably all thought it would be, isn't it.
I can also put up with the odd little bug, it's a massive RPG after all. It's in way better state than what Skyrim was on PS3 launch.
The only thing that made me go 'oh, shame' was that I felt I ended up in the second area too quickly. I hadn't even uncovered some of the first area, and didn't get chance to do side missions etc.
Now that second area has a completely different feel, it's great fun, but I quite like really ticking off one area before moving on to 'feel' a next experience.

Minor gripes though, fundamentally it's great fun.
