One thing you ended up seeing with Tsushima was Japanese developers coming out and saying that it’s the kind of game that couldn’t have been made within Japan.

Not just in terms of open world and character design, which were explicitly mentioned, but I suspect that politically it probably would have been seen as more problematic to see the Japanese samurai fend off the foreign invaders - I remember seeing some articles written by a Korean American in the end but I suspect criticism would been louder if it had been created by a Japanese studio, especially within Asia.
