I'm definitely out based on the difficulty that seems to be aimed at git gud more than anything which seems like unnecessary gatekeeping.

This may be a bit culturally insensitive but…. I can’t see what the problem is. The Chinese software industry is absolutely fucking massive with shitloads of developers and they have at least minority shareholdings in most western publishers.
Like this tweet in particular:
This hasn’t removed an opportunity for Chinese representation. They have virtually unlimited resources and could make games about literally anything should they choose to. It seems like a rush to defend people who neither need or want bedwetting western liberals defending them.

It is hard. It's a rogue-lite, designed to be replayed over and over to level up and help progressing. During a run you can unlock more combat moves, and once you have them unlocked you can keep pumping credits into them (about 5x the initial cost) to permanently unlock them for all runs. But these only seem to be additions. You also unlock extra health regen, structure (think of it like a kind of guard before you take significant damage) and some other bits. You should be able to beat the game with just the base combat moves, dodges and parry if you're good enough though. Hmmm. Sounds like something that would appeal to me and not him. Shame. If I was a fan of all that stuff I'd be all over it but it does nothing for me sadly.

I have found this all so very strange as you say there is large representation of Chinese developers out there and if they want to make a game that involves the celebration of Hong Kong Kung Fu films then so be it, but no one has. It's just like Ghost of Tsushima which also had this discussion because it wasn't made by a Japanese Dev but again the impetus is on a Japanese dev to do that and as far as I know there hasn't been a samurai game from a Japanese dev for a while, maybe the Onimusha series and tangentially Sekiro. I don't know it feels like from my POV this picture of Chinese developers is being painted where they have no opportunities or agency and need our support because they're so underrepresented. We'll just ignore the large amount of Chinese investment in game development today. Don't get me started on the whole colonialism thing if we're talking about China on a political level.

The need to white knight might actually hold some weight if the game wasn't about a near immortal wizard trying to take down a bunch of bad guys with magical powers of their own. It's hardly pushing itself as some historical representation of the culture. The setting seems like nothing more than a backdrop, perhaps inspired by a couple of films at a push. Some people really do need to shreik at anything these days. It must be a really unfulfilling existence.

It’s almost like they are suggesting they can’t because they are all stuck in code farms developing scam iPhone clicker games, which is kinda xenophobic in and of itself.

It's a little more forgiving in that you have multiple lives due to the aging mechanic. When you die you can respawn to try again but you're older, and there's a max age before game over. So you'll die, age, respawn on he spot and keep going. You can also earn lives back by defeating mini-bosses that appear during levels, but you won't get younger, you just have more chances of death before the permanent death. when you complete a level, you unlock the next level access at the age you reached it, so it then rewards playthroughs of previous levels to try to complete them at a younger age, to benefit your later game.
It is a bit of a try before you buy though. I think it's a difficult one to just guess at whether you like it or love it just based on the concept and kung-fu style.

I can see myself crumbling later in the year, especially if I catch it on sale, as I'm starting to get quite intruiged.

I love how the enemies can hit each other too. Some cunt came at me with a pipe last night and ended up clobbering 2 of his mates to the ground instead of me. Turned the tide of battle and allowed me to pop the 2 he'd weakened with finishers before caving his skull in with his own weapon.

It's OK unless he does it with a wok Hopefully that's a Chinese made Wok that was recently used by a real Chinese person from China not one of those western Chinese people.

I can see me just playing the first level over and over again until I perfect it. Quick run I had before. Anyone on the fence it feels even better than it looks to play

Does look good this, but I'm probably going to hold off for a bit. Not entirely convinced at the current (PC) price point in terms of the number of levels, and was planning on mainly trying Lost Ark this week (and obviously Elden Ring on the horizon soon).
Old Boy references sound great, though. Tell me: is there much tongue cutting and inadvertent incest?

Yeah that looks damn good, have to say.
Also, the fact that you can punch and kick people off ledges is making me twitch about buying it now purely for that.
I like the nod to Old boy with the 2d side section bit, nice.

Dualsense really gives it another dimension too. After seeing Decks' video that was going to be my next question. They have implemented haptic well, then?

Anyone on the fence it feels even better than it looks to play Are you playing that with any accumulated bonuses? To be honest, I’m still flailing and probably need to sit and check the moves etc. Have got quite a way into The Club, but finally ran out of life…. Not sure if the ‘buy something 5x times to keep it’ mechanic needs to be done on a single run? Presume so, but that seems difficult (!) so perhaps it remembers what was purchased for future runs, even if they are not present upon restart?

I apologise for posting that tweet. Didn't realise it would cause a negative reaction. Just found it amusing.
Been thinking about this game all day. I need to get back on it.

The 5x thing carries over.

Not to be that guy, but saying only Chinese developers are allowed to make a game like Sifu, or to insinuate that the game would be totally fine in your estimation if it had the consultation of just 1 Chinese person, is rather short minded. Otherwise what's the solution? Only people native to the country are allowed to create media based on it? So Americans can only write stories about America? Brazilians can only write about Brazil?
It got extra stupid with Tsushima because people were pointing out things like katana's weren't in use during the time period the game takes place in or these particular birds weren't nesting in the island and they took that as being evidence of a western studio being completely disrespectful. Yet the game comes out in Japan and reviewers and people who played it seemed to like it. So much so I believe the director was given an honorary title by the Mayor of Tsushima for promoting the name and heritage of the island, while funding the repair of a broken shrine.
So long as the portrayal of the setting or time period doesn't seem exploitative or offensive, or take away any chances from anyone from creating any media of their own, then I don't see the issue.
Anyway, Sifu seems pretty cool.

My best run of The Squats so far is completion at age 29. I just cannot avoid being hit via dodges and parries, and if you get caught once you basically get hit 3 or 4 times. The boss is especially a pain in the arse. It;s not like parrying in Batman or the other Warner games, there’s a very odd timing to it that I just can’t get.
I can catch bottles out of mid-air without issue though.

Sometimes I think EG are doing it for the clicks, but then I see one of their staff write "voice for marginalised people" in their own bio. It's just tiresome. As has been pointed out multiple times, it all comes from a site that hires almost exclusively white males too. Not that I think that's inherently an issue, but EG would tell you it is
But yeah, Sifu does look great. I'm holding off since Horizon is out soon, but it looks like something I'd have fun with. Reminds me of Sleeping Dogs at least, so if it plays at all similar to that I'll be happy.
