After modernising my ps2 I'm set to do my dreamcast next, seen the simple disk tray to sd card swap for £35 and I have the v1 model needed. Also they had a hdmi converter, I got a crt as well so no need for an expensive option. Anyone used similar and recommend it? kaicolabs.com/product/sega-dreamcast-hdmi-display-adaptor/How’s your modernised PS2 performing like now? There’s quite a few games locked to that system that I’d love to revisit. mcboot memory cards are £8 on eBay, buy one and have fun

Also a sata hard drive bay thing for £16.
It's been amazing, had a few people on WRC playing the local stage that was in the game. If you have old memory saves they don't work on other region games I learnt.

I keep meaning to get one of those HDD things and an mcboot so I can at least 'pirate' some of my original imports on DVD9s that don't work with Swap Magic to play them.
Am I correct in remembering that it won't just run import discs with mcboot or am I out of date?
Fan translations will be a nice bonus too...

It's fantastic for the price. I also have a modded ps2 and needed up buying the kaico ps2 adaptor specifically because I liked it so much.

Tiger Heli really is rather brilliant. Tough, but I've reached the end of ST3, hopefully I'll crack it this week. Basic, uncompromising, but terribly addictive. I've not even played the sequel yet.

Does the app support DVD9s though unlike Swap Magic? If you can just install multiregion stuff onto an HDD I would probably just do that though...

Pretty sure it does. I think the process is booting with a PS1 CD, then a PS2 DVD, then finally your import. Bit of a faff though and I can see why people just use a HDD.

Finally got a saturn with retrovision component cables and a satiator (soon). Really hyped for so many games I never got to play or see before such as Panzer Dragoon saga, Shining force 3, Radiant Silvergun etc.
Aldo bought a PC-engine mini with my brother for 50 euro, seems like a steal foe that amount considering the amount of games.
Also realized how to get access to the japanese PSN store for some great retro games.

The Saturn is mostly 240p and your TV will either not understand the signal or misinterpret it as 480i and mess up the image.

Any old school FF fans left? There's a really interesting video doing the rounds "In defence of Necron" that explains the meaning behind the ostensibly random final boss of FFIX. youtu.be/ilG_IswCfIAIt's pretty good. Managed to change my view on it.

Finally decided to mod my fat PS2 with an internal SSD, and slowly getting the kit together. I already have the official Sony network adaptor with an IDE drive interface, so have ordered a kit from eBay to convert this to SATA, and also got a McBoot memory card on the way.
Just need to order the SSD now. Anyone got any recommendations? I've read that PS2s can be picky which drives will work, and don't want to order a duff one.
I'm thinking 512GB will be plenty for me.

I was under the impression a SSD is completely wasted inside it, 5400 rpm drives are about as fast as it can use.

As fun as it is to make fun of DF's hyperbole, the PS1-PS3 era Retros are ace.

So I checked all those games thinking I must have not played some of them but it turns out that I played all of them. How the hell did I have all of those games?

Anyone got a Analogue Pocket on order? 2023 if you place an order now. Hilarious. I get there are chip shortages etc.. but how can they get the demand so wrong. Fuck that.

It's an interesting lineup for the Amiga 500 mini, probably shaped by expediency.
They got Chaos Engine which is a pretty big one, Stunt Car Racer is a classic of course. No Turrican games though and I guess most arcade ports were too complicated to license, so no New Zealand Story, Rainbow Islands, Dragon Breed or R-Type. If you can't get Lucasarts games I guess Simon the Sorcerer is a value-brand equivalent and probably the best substitute. All the games that Electronic Arts now owns are a sad omission too.
Some of the choices are so obscure though, the Amiga version of The Sentinel was incredibly rare so barely anybody knew it even existed, I guess it came as a package deal with Stunt Car Racer.
Hopefully the system is actually wide open, so end users can prune out the game selection and make substitutions of their own.

How easy is it to get hold of Amiga Roms? I do like that line up mind you but of course there are a ton of games I'd want to play on it that aren't listed.

I played a fair few of those, and I never even had an amiga. I did have a mate who had one though, and a different mate who had an atari st, so between them they covered most games. It seems like a pretty good list, though there's a couple I don't recognize. I don't remember if I played them on Atari or Amiga, but I also played a lot of Xenon 2, Gods, IK+ and a really weird Monty Python game that was largely a fish going through pipes? Robocop 3 was also the dream game that everyone couldn't believe was real.

Amiga game preservation was screwed up from the start by cracked versions of releases being the only option in a lot of cases, in recent years some people have started trying to fix this but you often couldn't get certain games in their original form, you're sometimes going through multiple cracked versions trying to find one that loads through to the game.
Unfortunately, cracktros are not just lousy music, hideous typography and endless, tedious messages. They're another thing that needs to be emulated and another barrier to get past when you just want to play the game.

Hmmm yeah I can envisage this being a pain. Might be worth enduring mind you if I can get hold of the shadow of the beast trilogy amongst others.

Anyone have any recommendations as to the best translation of FF6? I hear the GBA one is the most accurate…

GBA should be the most up to date official translation with later ports using it too. There are a bunch of unofficial ones too if you check romhacking.net but I haven't tried any of those. I only played though on SNES and GBA as the PS1 version in the middle wasn't great.

I’m currently playing the original 90s translation and it’s… pretty weak. I only realised how weak when I read a comparison to other translations on a fan site.

PS1 was good, I thought. Didn't play the GBA version, but liked it more than the SNES version. Pixel Remasters version is out soon on Steam and mobile, isn't it? Could hold off till reports of that version show up.
