Favourite and only! Which is interesting, interest in Linux in Poland equals interest in Linux on this forum equals 0. I'm interested in Linux, ( I work as a devops engineer for a fintech and all of our backend and desktops are Linux based, also a couple of my home systems) though I'm not sure it has much mileage in a gaming forum.... UNTIL NOW!
I mentioned Linux a few times over the last 15-20 years on Eurogamer (one of my first threads was about me going to a linux conference in London) but never pushed it beyond non gaming.
I don't have much more to add tbh though I suspect that Proton will obfuscate the need to be concerned with the OS on steamdeck.
Somehow I never saw your post. Iirc you’re from Germany? I think Linux is quite big there. And gaming on Linux has been a thing since forever now. In fact, from my experience, 15 years ago it was easier to run a game than it was some windowy program. But then Valve had their insanity spell that’s been going on until now and it’s become a click-click affair.

This is the biggest concern I have with the system. I fully expect the hardware to be pretty good and to do an excellent job (previews have been really positive), but Valve's hands off approach and leaving things to developers and the community is likely to end up causing the software side to be really hit and miss. Without dedicated Deck UI there will be some games that will be unplayable. Imagine playing any of Paradox's grand strategy games or any text heavy RPG on that titchy screen, unless they are going to increase text size or spread out interactive UI elements. Similarly, as good as the hardware is, there will be many games that will likely need graphics tweaking. Every newish (3D) game should really have a Deck graphics mode, where you can just enable it and it will automatically put all the settings to developer approved settings that have been tested with the Deck. That is unlikely to happen. Obviously, it is good that the system isn't going to be closed, but in order have an experience that I expect most people want from a handheld system, there really does need to be some quality control for the software. Otherwise, there claim that all games will work on the Deck is nonsense.

The Deck Verified program is the quality control. They can't force developers to do anything, but they do claim to be checking every game on Steam and categorising them according to how well they work.

The way they have handled pre-orders means these will go to people that are familiar with pc gaming and know how to change resolution in a game. I don’t think they will build millions in the first year and some kid that is used to a switch will bump into technical problems or something. Maybe eventually it will be mass market but by then the kinks will be ironed out.

I'm predominantly a PC gamer and have been since I was about 7 when I needed to create boot disks to free up resources for individual games. I would still expect a device like this to be (literally) pick up and play. I don't think I would be alone in that expectation.
The Deck has the added bonus that you can open it up with a different OS or install whatever you want, such as emulators. But if you just want to play Red Dead Redemption 2 on it then it should be a straightforward process. They are even using games like Factorio and Crusader Kings 3 as part of their promotion, two games that are likely to be horrible experiences on the Deck without developers making adjustments to accommodate the controls and UI.
It's an exciting bit of kit, but it could be an essential gaming device for many PC players and convert console-only people if it gets the support. I just don't see developers doing that without the base of players already being there unless Valve start being unusually proactive in encouraging them to sort that support. Their usual attitude of leaving it up to others to sort is just going to end up with a fairly unpleasant experience for the user.
Without that support, I expect the Deck will be a nice to have for some, but probably gathering dust for many. Valve will soon see some new shiny thing to get distracted by and forget about it.

Probably, who cares really? If a get a couple of years with it and can chip away at that huge library of unplayed games that’s all I really need. But I don’t expect it to be plug and play at all in the first two years.

There is only 1 (that I know of here) and that's me.
Backstory... I was the OG when I joined in 2003, other one came along with a VERY similar name. I didn't mind and it happens and I liked his posts. Almost the same thing happened here but we got chatting and he kindly changed his name to Rob the Robber - thats the one based in Germany. I live in Bath, England. But am Welsh. I've over complicated this so just ignore that last bit.
TL/DR I am DrStrangelove and am UK based, other one from Germany is Rob the Robber.

Ridiculously I'd have sworn there was a Rob the Robber back on the Auld Forum! So it's not impossible that in giving up the cyber squatting on the Strangelove name, they've taken to cybersquatting on another name!!!! FRAUD ACTIONS!

Linux gaming on Steam is pretty simple and solid these days. Most the main strategy and rpgs I play all come out on it now and are fine. Pillars, Tyranny, the Paradox games, Civ, XCOM, Total War. Once the big engines support it properly stuff just tends to come out relatively easily.

If only you had my post history in Eurogamer to compare it to and see writing style, subject choices, greivances, personal details given etc then you could see if I was the real one. I don't post much while other strangelove (aka Rob the robber) does so that never helped. So for now you'll have to take my word for it... Or accept the masquerade and play along But yeah, Linux gaming is a thing and is far easier than its ever been, I'd say its more accessible than Mac gaming in general as there seems to be more choice (more indy and sub triple-A releases).

Is anybody here actually getting one near launch? Mine was just a vague "Q2" when I checked.

I really can't imagine Total War working on a Steam Deck properly. Maybe it's just the paucity of my imagination.

Size of that screen. Dayum. Lovely. Personally I've always found the Switch a little small to hold comfortably with my sausage hands for extended periods, so will appreciate the bigger size of the Deck.

The Switch is really uncomfortable even with my medium sized hands. There is just nothing ergonomic about it at all. Since it's announcement, I always thought the Deck would be a more comfortable handheld, even if it is quite a bit bigger.
A bigger screen is nice to see too. Switch's screen is just a tad to small (although the OLED may solve that, not seen it in person).
