And here's our favourite poll. I mean Pole Favourite and only! Which is interesting, interest in Linux in Poland equals interest in Linux on this forum equals 0.

Do we know if it will have a browser? How much is a copy of windows these days anyway and would it eat up much of the storage?

They spoke about it on the bombcast, they got shown a desktop setup at Valve.

I'd buy one....if I didn't have to wait a year.

I absolutely want one of these, although I think it'll end up being a Christmas 2022 prezzie. Which is alright, really, as I want one of those prodigiously expensive memory cards for my Xbox this year.
Or a Transformer. I'm always happy to get Transformers.
I'm less bothered about the memory as I'll mostly be using it for Game Pass. The Steam Deck, that is, not a Transformer. Although imagine the possibilities...

Somehow got to hide the whole thing from the missus.

And here's our favourite poll. I mean Pole Favourite and only! Which is interesting, interest in Linux in Poland equals interest in Linux on this forum equals 0. I'm interested in Linux, ( I work as a devops engineer for a fintech and all of our backend and desktops are Linux based, also a couple of my home systems) though I'm not sure it has much mileage in a gaming forum.... UNTIL NOW!
I mentioned Linux a few times over the last 15-20 years on Eurogamer (one of my first threads was about me going to a linux conference in London) but never pushed it beyond non gaming.
I don't have much more to add tbh though I suspect that Proton will obfuscate the need to be concerned with the OS on steamdeck.

I'm interested in The Steam Deck, but I want to see how it plays out. If it's popular enough to get a gen 2, I'd probably get that as it'll give them time to iron out any niggles and hopefully lower the price/raise the specs.

Valve are probably hoping the OS takes off for the other portables coming from China, all of them buying from the same store, maybe devs tune settings for the main device only.

I have pre-ordered the 256GB one. Q2 ETA. I am hoping it will help with getting through some of my Steam backlog.
Also thinking that with Windows on it I could use it to remote play the PS5. Tried using remote play on my phone with a Razer Kishi whilst on holiday. The kishi was nice but struggled with game text on a 6.7" screen.
The Steam Deck should be better for reading game text right?

Depends on the game but if it's one which determines UI size by resolution then it'll naturally make things bigger by virtue of the smaller screen res.
I suspect there'll be more games with UI size sliders in the future to accommodate the Deck. Wouldn't be surprised to see controller bindings with zoom functions too, like using the touch screen to bring up a magnifier.

Unfortunately nothing for the xbox atm, though cloud works through a browser.

I'm one of the few who went for the 64GB version, thinking it will allow me to get through some of my ten year old steam backlog when I have occasional work travel (not that fussed about playing the latest and greatest). The more I see of the thing, the more excited I'm getting.

Just made my mind up on definitely not getting a Steam Deck. Thanks Reddit.
I saw a post about compatibility and how it was good news that the Divinity games would work on it. I replied saying D2 works well enough on Switch and therefore I would be surprised if it didn’t work on the Steam Deck.
Cue lots of responses about me being an idiot because it is not that simple. Then I remembered why I quickly gave up on PC gaming in my teens. And if it is not going to be able to reliably run some games the Switch runs fine then what is the fucking point in this thing?

Presumably, if the SD gains enough traction, devs will fix up their games to work on it.
Plus, Valve, Codeweavers et al will be constantly improving Proton to enable more games to work.
There's 0% chance it'll be perfect at launch, but will 100% improve in the months following. Right now Proton enables new games on a practically daily basis.
And Divinity 2 runs well with Proton from what I can tell. So it may be "not that simple" in general, but it seems to be just that simple in case of D2. In this case, it may be more the case of lack of power than hardware/software compatibility.

I must admit the recent news about compatibility not being quite as extensive as it possibly seemed slightly dampened my enthusiasm as well. But, I'm not due one until Q1 2022, so I'll just wait for the 2021 buyers to give their thoughts and then see how it goes. No point in getting my knickers in a twist atm.

Frankly, both Valve's initial statement of being able to play all the games and this article are a little off to me. The Codeweavers guy is definitely a good source of info, but his statement of the hardware being good enough to run all the games out there seems seriously far fetched, not to mention software compat ofc.
What is actually going to happen is people will revel in pointing out games that don't work at launch hoping for their 5 minutes of fame and that's the only thing everyone will remember for years to come.
I had a conversation with someone recently making fun of the iPhone because it couldn't send MMSs. That tells you all you need to know.

Yeah I agree. Reckon there's going to be a big hullabaloo when this thing releases, regardless of whether it's broadly a success or not.

It's not quite as plug and play as a console but I think it's more a case of one extra step, that of checking Proton DB. I don't doubt that there will be special websites dedicated to testing out the newest games on the Deck as well.
Given how some Switch titles run nowadays, you kinda have to check reviews on those games as well so it's not that much more of a worry.

Yeah, even for more low-end indie games, I always check how they run on Switch first
