Token "it's because they're exactly the same as missions in all the other games since the ps2" response. Ha! Perhaps, but the story telling and cut scenes are really quite memorable it seems.

Because the entire idea is infuriatingly annoying? Hey, you can play a bunch of demos, but we'll release them all at the same time with a short time limit, so you won't have time to play most of them, and you won't know which ones to choose!* *to my understanding, as I've not engaged with it before either, due to it sounding like a PITA. I think it's a great idea. It's like a free buffet of games to sample. If you want guidance, then just have a flick through the Next Fest tag on RPS, or the Wishlisted hub on EG. Yeah, good idea. I'll have a look after I finish work... ...oh wait, it ends in about 8 hours. Genius.

I just tried that. Went to RPS which then took me to EG, clicked on something and it took me to VG247. I really hate when sites do that.

Yeah I tried this far too late too.
Had a quick go on STRAFAT but was playing from my sofa on a controller and it very much did not work well lol
Game looks great though.

Doom 64
It's Doom but in 64 bits! Enjoying it so far apart from having to flick switches and trying to work out what it's done in the level. Been stuck on a level once or twice trying to figure out where to go next.
Was Doom always like that?
I'm also playing...
Dino Crisis
I never completed this when it first came out back in what, 98? 99? Determined to put that right but damn these tank controls are infuriating.

I badly wanted to shoot someone last night, so I put GTAV on.
I don't think there's any other game than GTA that my fingers just automatically know the controls.

Given how awkward all Rockstar games controls are, that's quite impressive.

Actually, I want to play through both GTA IV DLC stories, because I started both back in the day and left them unfinished.
/story of my life
Currently playing though Astobot (which is all kinds of lovely) and Silent Hull 2 Remake (which is better than it had any right to be).

Given how awkward all Rockstar games controls are, that's quite impressive. Probably says more about my memory in general, tbh. I think it's just down to sheer time spent. It hasn't changed that much in any of the 3D versions, so it's still X to run, Triangle to get in a car, etc. Doesn't matter what I played last, GTA seems to be the one thing that I remember the buttons.

The amount of "yeah I let my kids play GTA, it's not that bad" stuff I hear from parents makes me laugh/despair. I got to the first Trevor scene yesterday. He's introduced by cutting to him fucking a messed up biker woman from behind before going on to curb stomping her boyfriend to death.
Yeah, cool cool cool. Nothing wrong with that, kids.

Playing you say...
Throne and liberty. I never play this genre but downloaded on the ps5 and juct completed act 1, it is pretty good, not sure how much I will play or if I will complete the campaign though.
Silent Hill 2 remake 4 odd hours in, blooper team done did good.
Dead Island remaster easy game to put on and complete a couple of quests and then turn off
Flock Purely for daily cheveo gamepass quest, it is ok.
I want/need to make SH2 my "main" so will concentrate on that I think.

Shame, because it's one of my favourite games, but I can't see me playing something that janky. The old PS store release of the PS2 version on the PS4 was better.

The combat is terrible and some of the missions have aged fairly badly. From a nostalgic point of view, it still holds interest. Getting to Flint County didn't have the same impact as it once did. I can remember being blown away, that suddenly I'm transported into this woodland section, with Mount Chiliad.

Dunno why, but I've never engaged with Steam Next Fest. The EG/RPS coverage has been extensive this time round, which is great, and I finally had the impetus to take a dip before it ends in a day -_- Because the entire idea is infuriatingly annoying? I did just add a few to my steam library without installing them. Perhaps I'll get to them, perhaps not.
Do they disappear once the demos are taken down?

Evil West (PS5)
Had no idea this was that good! The combat is like Doom 2016 in third person, with infinite ammo and a massive selection of powerful and cool looking special moves. It looks pretty great too, both in terms of art/enemy design and graphical fidelity. Having an absolute blast. Love it, an overlooked gem.

GTA Trilogy was an abomination, especially considering the money R* has earned from the series. If I ever want to replay those games, it will be the original steam versions with something like the silent blog patch on top or I'll setup my OG XBox...

I had a good laugh at some of the faces that the AI generated though.

Same here.
After going to bed after 01:00 multiple times last week, I really need to start saying, "Just one more run..." an hour or so earlier than I have been doing. I'm bloody knackered!

Started the Until Dawn remake the other night. I thought it would be a good game to play together, and we're having a good time with it. Having not played the original, I don't really have any reference points of, this should be like this etc. It looks very pretty and I haven't had any major FPS drops.
The elephant in the room is obviously the price point. It should have been a £10 upgrade. But anyway, it isn't a major shit game from what I've played so far.

Struggling with Space Marine 1 now. It does so many things right with the world and the scale and the big stompy attacks, but it just goes on and on and on.
I played it back in the day and got about 1/3 of the way through, despite initially loving it, before losing momentum. This time I'm apparently about 1/2 way through, despite initially loving it, and really struggling to keep any momentum.
I'm not sure what it needs, but it needs something to shake things up in the middle 3rd. It does its best. There are a few bits in turrets of dropships, some more sniper-y sections, some jetpack sections, but it mostly all comes down to smashing endless orcs.
From the story (which is ok, if basic) I get the sense Chaos or someone similar is going to show up. If so (and I bloody hope so!) they needed to show up sooner. (and the game needed to be shorter).

That's exactly how it must feel to fight against Orks, though. Just wading through an endless green wave.

A Quiet Place: the Road Ahead
I've been playing this while waiting for Bloober to fix Silent Hill 2 so I can actually make some progress.
It was a bit of a risk there were no reviews at the time, but I really like the franchise and Alien Isolation is one of my favourite games...given I had some birthday gift funds in my wallet (free money!) I pulled the trigger.
Well, first of all, it's not really like Alien Isolation: there is little dynamism to the encounters with the Death Angels and no real AI to speak of. You make too much noise, and it's effectively a stealth auto-fail. There are some more scripted encounters but these are, well, scripted, and triggered at key moments. I actually think it's better thought of as a walking simulator - a crouch-walking simulator perhaps. In its favour, it looks pretty great for a game that more or less came from nowhere, and much of the gameplay involves moving along (pretty damn linear) paths rummaging, reading documents, finding out a bit more backstory etc.
There's some appeal to the main gameplay mechanisms: using your phonomoter to measure the noise you make relative to the ambient noise of the area you are in, while not kicking cans (because bins don't exist anymore) or walking over broken glass, using sand where you can. Switching between that and your torch (both are immutably left-hand items for some reason), preserving battery life, managing your asthma (essentially replacing the health mechanic, which would be redundant given if you are attacked it's an instakill). There's a pleasingly kinetic element to interacting with certain things in the environment e.g. unscrew vents by rotating the left stick, then pull the left stick back to lower the vent cover but gently as if you let it clang you're fucked. But, so far at least, there's not a lot more to it. It's an average stealth game with some impression visuals and sound design.
It's a 6/10 so far, speaking as a fan of the genre and the movies.

I didn't know there was even a Quiet Place game.
I guess the main question is whether it manages to capture the tension that the movie had?
Amnesia (1) was ridiculously tense for me, but like most stealth games it relied on visibility/darkness. It'd be interesting to do one where (iirc) the enemies are blind, so only sound matters.
But tension and insta-fail / replaying sections usually don't go well together, because after the second time you've 'died' and had to replay, all tension is gone and it's just annoying. Hard balance to strike.

Yeah, I'm not sure - so far - it strikes it, which isn't to say there's no tension, there is a decent enough amount. But the smoke and mirrors design is bit too obvious. The brilliance of Alien Isolation - part of its brilliance - was the dual macro and micro AI Creative Assembly used: the macro being the director that would nudge the alien in your direction at various times, and the micro being the behaviour of the creature (fascinating article on this here). That's lacking A Quiet Place, hence me thinking it's better to see the game as some form of walking simulator at heart, with collectibles and gentle survival elements.
