I could barely bring myself to complete FC5. The narrative loves to wrest control from the player all the time. It's like the writers played Bioshock 1 and decided it should be the ending, but every 30 minutes. New Dawn is pretty bad in this regard too, there's a very strong cut scene impotence going on. You'll mow through 100 enemies when taking over an outpost without much breaking a sweat, but when you're in a cut scene a single baddie with a pistol turns you into a wet sock. There's just that disconnect between the gameplay and the story. Yeah, this. I found it absolutely infuriating. I believe the term is ludonarrative dissonance as coined by Clint Hocking initially for Nathan Drake who is charming and wise cracking but has killed hundreds of people. |

Primal was immense though, actually a bit of a refreshing change (played it about a year after playing 5 and New Dawn).
I actually bought a copy of Far Cry 2 a few months ago for PS3, but am thinking of getting it on Steam to eventually play on Steam Deck as its cheap and think once I get one I will have more time to play it on that. Feel like it's an essential game to play if you're a fan of the series and can't believe I haven't.

I would strongly recommend the mods Far Cry 2 Redux (https://www.nexusmods.com/farcry2/mods/286) and Realistic Reshade (https://www.nexusmods.com/farcry2/mods/276). I think it should be possible to install these on Steam Deck too.
The vanilla version is very brown (Reshade fixes that). Redux fixes a bunch of issues with game balance.

Seeing 2 referred to as a "janky older game" gave me a few more gray hairs, but I guess it's undeniable, huh.
Like all right-thinking persons I became an evangelist for it soon after it clicked for me amid the frustration. I basically enjoyed 3, but it sorta felt like a domesticated version of its predecessor. It also felt like a wasted opportunity to finally put dinosaurs into the series, as was the plan for the original, I believe, and that was kind of a bummer.
Someday I'll get to the rest.

FarCry Instincts Predator was my first introduction to the series on the xbox360.
Took me awhile to finish it but thought it was alright.
FC2 would have been great but the constant respawn at checkpoints on the road soon got annoying for me.
FC3 was my favourite. FC4 was just the same game with less likable characters in a different location and FC5 was just a slog so I have no interest in ever trying FC6.

Pretty common reaction. It helps to not always drive everywhere. You can use boats or go on foot, evade outposts etc. Also, don't just get stuck on one weapons loadout. FC2 is a game that becomes boring quite easily unless you make it more interesting yourself.

A big part of the enjoyment for me was being a caveman chucking spears at things and riding sabertooth tigers and so on. Just so much more fun than firing bullets and riding around in jeeps. |

I went to a VR experience thing at the weekend and played Far Cry VR with some mates, it was great fun. Their set up is entirely free roaming (around a big warehousey type room with floor sensors and all sorts). Best VR thing I've ever tried, the free roaming aspect was awesome and my non-gamer mates were well impressed with it. The game itself is based around Far Cry 3 (my personal favourite) and was frankly very basic but the experience as a whole was cool as fuck. here - meetspacevr.co.uk/ |

I finished it a few months back, but its so painfully average. All the tools of a good game, but just hard to have any fun with.
We need a remaster of 2, darn it!

I found FC2 tiring after a while especially the checkpoints that literally respawned after you walked a bit away. Really took me out of the game and some of the gameplay features like weapons jamming and so forth just became annoying than immersive. I think it had a great sense of place but the gameplay wasn't good enough. FC3 was it where it all came together for me.

I loved everything everyone hated about 2 and hated everything they changed in later games. I've tried 2 of them since, but they've lost the sandbox magic.

Blood Dragon and the first one are the only ones I've ever finished. I've tried 2, 3, 5 and I own 6 as well but can't get into them for some reason.

I think I've played them all apart from Primal and 6, but just can't drum up the enthusiasm to play 6 and have no real interest in where they take the series next. Definitely yet another case of Ubisoft over-egging the cake.
6 also seemed to be leaning more towards that wonky spin-off of 5 that had damage numbers and stuff IIRC, which just don't belong in a shooter unless you really embrace the RPG side of it.
I definitely don't think it's a case of preferring your first one. FC1 was fun until the trigen appeared. FC2 just didn't gel with me at first (but I enjoyed it a few years later when I came back to it)
FC3 feels like the peak of the series to me. Everything since has just been an iteration of the exact same formula.

Is 6 the one with Gus Fring? That's when i gave up on the series after enjoying the others. I got off the starting island, looked at the size of the map and thought "fuck this" and didn't touch it again.
The tech/AI didn't seem as good as the previous games either which was weird.

Good, creepy bad guy, too. The opposite of 5, which was repetitive locations and enemies and a rubbish lineup of nasty honchos. I might try the earlier ones, though. I turned off all the damage display and the like, all the most RPG stuff and just focused on having stealthy weapons mostly. |

I think by this time the old Dunia tech was and is creaking and there was only so much they could do with it which is why they're using the engine from The Division now instead. |
