Iirc, the book resets everything in Nioh. In nioh 2 it refunds amrita and you reset the skill tree in the dojo and prestige titles in the tea house.
Skill points do drop pretty quick, though, so I would just play with the new weapon for a bit.

To echo a couple points, yeah every build should use a bit of Onmyo in both games even if you're not necessarily speccing for it. The below is from my experience in 2 but should still mostly hold true in 1. (as usual, put behind spoilers for brevity) All the stat debuff/buff talismans have their uses, but Sloth as was already mentioned is basically easy mode in 1, and even in 2 where it was nerfed, it stacks with the lightning debuff so it's still worth considering. That said, there's also a skill that I can't remember how you get that triggers a Sloth effect on any Onmyo hit, which as you can imagine gets ridiculous.
Divination lasts basically forever and tells you where everything is, enemies, collectibles, the works. Plus, crucially, it counts as a buff for the purposes of training the Onmyo skill, so if you have it on pretty much always like I did you'll passively get skill points just by playing the game!
The various -stop Talismans can be a big help against bosses that rely on elemental attacks (there's a few specific bosses that are almost completely trivialized by the appropriate -stop). On the flipside, offensive Onmyo is also arguably the easiest way to apply two elemental debuffs on an enemy at once, thus triggering the powerful Confusion debuff.
Barrier talisman is a big help in stamina management and it makes you able to dispel Yokai ki pools with a touch, depriving them of an important resource.
However, something I found arguably even more useful than Sloth with even a half-decent build was the Extraction talisman (create and absorb Amrita every time you hit an enemy). On its own it just passively refills your Living Weapon/Yokai Shift, then helps you maintain it, which is already pretty good. However, when combined with the various equipment/spirit effects that trigger "on Amrita absorption", of which there are plenty, it becomes downright insane. There's one effect in particular that gives you HP on Amrita absorption, and it made it so that after a certain point I barely even needed to use Elixirs outside of bosses! (and even with bosses, there were times when I'd basically just stand there and punch the boss silly, not caring that I was getting hit because I was getting it all back anyway!) The tl;dr is Onmyo good, even if you don't focus on it at least grab Divination and Extraction when possible (and Sloth, in 1) and look for a "Heal on Amrita absorption" effect. They'll serve you magnificently

And since I mentioned it, I don't know much about 1, but in 2 I swear by the fists as a weapon type. I barely even made use of their weapon skill chaining capabilities, and even so they had very fast attacks (especially good with Extraction talisman), really good elemental application (which would only have become better if I used skill chaining to its full potential, since you can imbue skills with different elements), satisfying animations and a very fun ultimate skill in Beyond Infinity. A drawback is their short range, but you have a lot of mobility when using them so I didn't find that to be too much of an issue.

I've never used magic in any game that has it, from Souls to Skyrim; however, it sounds as though I ought to break that tendency here! Tsk. You haven't lived until you've levitated your way across Vvardenfell.

JuniorFEWell, I finally beat that blasted boss - not a pretty fight, but it got the job done - and now I need to put points into Dex and Magic in order to do two of the three new Dojo missions. Is that a worthy investment of Amrita? (I've only been levelling Body, Heart, and Skill since I respecced to a dual-sword build.) Cheers in advance!

How optional are the sub-missions in Nioh - truly optional (as in, you don't have to do them at all), or "optional" (as in, you don't *have* to do them, but you'll end up severely under-levelled if you don't)?
'Cause I've done several, and I'm not feeling it.

I think you end up quite overlevelled if you do them. They do become a bit of a chore after a while. I don't think you're missing any unique bosses or anything. I'm not sure how much your level really matters in Nioh anyway
Also, for what it's worth, I never bothered with magic or anything (never do in souls games) and beat all the bosses well enough
Actually, I might have that wrong on second thoughts. I remember not wanting to overlevel early on so ended up hoarding/losing loads of amrita regularly (matching level requirements) and then noticing later on that I was quite underlevelled, but it didn't matter. One of the Nioh bods will know better
That said, I'm pretty sure the game does clearly tell you the recommended level for a stage so if you notice yourself lagging behind and it's affecting you, just do a few optional stages then

By memory I gave up in the side Mission that is the exact same place as the big water blob's level (Umi-Bozi?), and has that new bird man enemy as a miniboss at the end. Unfortunately since it is JUST AFTER Umi Bozi's level, it was incredibly tedious to go through it all again.

I think I'll try beelining the main quest for a while, and leave the sub-missions alone unless they become necessary later on - I'm really not enjoying them, and it seems pointless to force myself through optional content just to see it checked off when I open the world map.

That's exactly the mission I'm doing at the moment! (Boy, does it suck.)
Having wasted ages looking for the third brazier to light - turns out it was already lit, so you only have to light two, and the miniature blob monsters will spawn in the boss arena regardless - I tried to wrap up the mission, and ended up pretty vexed. The bird man miniboss is a pain, but having to run the full gauntlet (four blobs and two massive yokai) each time you die just isn't fun for me.

Hey, remember when I absolutely despised Hino-Enma? Boy, those were the days! Good times.
My new gaming nemesis is Yuki-Onna.
This fuckin' game, man, I swear.

Ohh that's who I thought you meant when you said Hino Enma (been ages since I played it) Yuki-Onna is a fun fight. She's got a mad dash that can catch you, hasn't she? That's the one to watch out for She's one of the post game bosses, with a friend

What weapons are you using, by the way? I think I went with swords/dual swords. The dual swords have a flurry attack that does ridiculous damage from what I remember

I'm using dual swords almost exclusively - I have a regular sword in my second weapon slot, but I hardly ever use it. I mainly stay in mid stance, switching to low for the boss fights as I find the extra speed to be more useful than the extra damage. (High is just too slow for my liking, and ends up getting me killed more often than not.) Yuki-Onna is just ridiculous. At least Hino-Enma always opened with the same move, so I could recover my Guardian Spirit before starting the fight in earnest; Yuki-Onna seems to switch between several different moves as her opener, and at least two of them can kill me from full health.
I don't care about the lost Amrita, but not having a full Living Weapon gauge to call upon is a pain in the ass.
Fire is effective - she's an ice demon at the end of a snowy level, so I figured fire was the way to go - but I only have a limited number of fire talismans, and I'm reluctant to use them when I die so damn quickly.

Ulythium I think you're starting to realize why I keep droning on and on about Onmyo by now Not only do you not have to worry about running out of elemental talismans when the relevant skill gives you rechargeable ones, but you should also have Sloth available to unlock now to slow her down...

JuniorFE I do indeed That said, as helpful as the Sloth Talisman is, I'm trying not to use it unless I really have to - the only time I've actually used it to win a fight, as opposed to messing around to see what it can do, was the duel against that guy in the first region. I hated that douchebag.
Pleased to say that Yuki-Onna is down now.

I used dual swords pretty much exclusively for both games and built around the skills. Spin to win is great for normal enemies and proc’ing status effects, water sword is amazing for mincing bosses when they are in a prone state and you can get sign of the cross so OP you can one shot almost everything. Try to get a full set of master swordsman armour for some juicy bonuses.
I ended up mostly living in high stance. The high stance skill tree eventually means that hard combo is insanely strong.
you’ll get to a point where you can just do this to this arsehole

Bongo HeraclesHoly crap! Although I haven't used high stance much, I've got a bunch of unused skill points, so I might just look at that part of the upgrade tree later on tonight.

Did anyone actually manage to beat The Trail of the Master on NG without resorting to cheese tactics? If so, I doff my cap to you!

Have no clue. I looked it up and recognised the level but that's the problem with the sub missions reusinng them. I think I did all the sub missions up to the end as I systematically went through them before moving on to the next proper stage. Didn't do any of the post game ones though as I think the second game might have come out or I moved onto the DLC or something. Some of them were pretty hard (throwing bosses in together)

That's fair.
It's the one in which the boss fight consists of a Raven Tengu and a Flying Bolt. I struggle like crazy with the Tengus anyway, and with the Bolt zipping about and slowing you down as well... I don't know how you're supposed to do it sans cheese, but nothing I tried came close to working!

Oh god, those things. I think Raven Tengu's are a regular feature straight off the bat in Nioh 2, so get used to them. I seem to remember they're quite vulnerable after one of their attacks (a spinny wind thing?) but I definitely remember struggling with them for a while
I hate dual boss fights anyway. There's a few I enjoy but it always makes my heart sink when I find one

I think I will have done. There are only a few I went back to after I started NG+ and they unlock after you finish the campaign.
I can’t remember how I did it but the key is probably burst damage on the flying bolt. Sloth the tengu and try to kill the bolt as fast as possible. Repeat as needed.
You should also have the makings of a build by now so make sure all your gear is right.

I ended up sprinting straight for the Bolt, activating my Living Weapon, and killing it before the Tengu had finished spawning; then I just had my usual struggle to beat the stupid bird monster, but without the assistance of Living Weapon.
Tengu are easily the hardest enemies in the game for me. The one in the previous main mission took me more tries to beat than the Ogress - said level's main boss - and that was with the use of Sloth Talismans and other cheesy tactics!
|
|
|
Post by JuniorFE on Oct 24, 2023 9:12:58 GMT
Yeah Tengu are jerks of the highest order in both games. You do get Yokai Counters as an option in 2, but it's hardly foolproof. Nothing stopping the bastard from just spamming the "fly up and fire gust" attack...
I usually just hit them with a debuff or two even if they were regular enemies, most of the time I could find a shrine or shortcut before running out of talismans anyway.

I'm basically at the point whereby every time I see a Tengu, I'll run in the opposite direction if possible.
There's one in the sub-mission I was doing last night, guarding a chest along a narrow pathway. If this was a Souls game, I'd probably be able to open the chest and get the loot before skedaddling; however, I don't think Nioh has i-frames during animations, so the stupid bird would two-shot me before I could snag my prize.

I remember Nioh having i-frames during the double doors opening animation, at any rate, you'll eventually find on armors an effect which extends the invulnerability time of dodges.
I saw someone above mentioned Onmyo… I don't know how far you plan to go, because the game seriously "begins" once you move onto difficulties added by the DLC packs, but don't neglect Onmyo (or Ninjutsu, for that matter), why? Because once you reach a certain power level (I don't remember right now if it is 400, or 500), each of them gives you a passive 5% increase to melee damage.
Random stuff I wish I knew during my first playthrough:
- What appears to be the suggested level in the mission tab actually refers to the level of your equipment, not the character's level. In other words, don't care too much about making up a build in the first difficulty, just swap to whatever helps you deal with a mission level.
- Living Weapon gets a "duration" buff, if it's activated when at critical health.
