And, much more quickly than I could have predicted, Nioh 2 finished! ...Well, the main story, at any rate. Who knows when I'll get around to the DLC (let alone NG+es) with Tears of the Kingdom's imminent arrival To get the inevitable comparison with Wo Long out of the way... I don't really know what to think. Wo Long's combat is more measured and simpler where Nioh is more free (to the point of chaotic sometimes), but Nioh also gives you a lot more options re: magic, Ninjutsu and such... Wo Long's loot system is much more streamlined but Nioh wins on variety again (both in terms of set bonuses and on weapon types/skills)... Honestly, my opinion can be summed up as "Fuck it, both are awesome, play whichever one works best for you" I have to give a shout-out to two things that probably contributed the most to finishing this quickly though: first, the maps of the main missions hosted on Fextralife (courtesy of a YouTuber I believe), helped greatly with collectibles and such. The other thing is, oddly enough, the very same Yatsu no Kami that marked the end of my initial stab at the game, in two ways at that: for one, kicking its scaly arse on the same day I came back was a big motivational wake-up call for me ("You did this that easily, you can do the rest, go for it", as it were) and for another, as I mentioned, my unwilling hiatus allowed the DLC to release, and my trusty fists came into the game, punching holes through every challenge thereafter. I highly doubt I'd be done as quickly (or had as much of a blast, for that matter) if they weren't in

Wo Long is nowhere near as good, sadly. I haven’t played it since more or less launch but it suffered from being overly streamlined and having some weird design decisions.
It’s a good game, still worth playing but Nioh 2 is, imho, the best non-From souls game by some distance.

Agree a million percent. I actually traded in Wo Long after finishing it. It was ultimately a big disappointment. Nioh 2 is the gold standard non-From souls-like imo as well.

I really need to play Nioh 2 - loved the original and Wo Long was decent but I've not got round to it yet for whatever reason.

Looking back on Wo Long, it was hardly bad, but it did feel a bit like it was trying to be two things (tighter, less complex combat like Sekiro but loot/spell/item mechanics like Nioh, and specifically the parry being similar to the Yokai counter from 2) and not excelling in either. Of course with full DLC maybe that will change, I did notice some punching action going on in the latest trailer so I might be able to relive my Nioh 2 Fist focus glory days after all

Once all the dlc is out for Wo Long I’ll definitely buy it again. In an ultimate edition package, in a (deep) sale. Til then, I’ll probably just replay Nioh 2.

I'm enjoying Nioh so far, although I decided to pack it in for the night after getting my ass beaten by the first boss four times in swift succession!

Onryoki is down! (It took more tries than I'd care to admit, though.)
Oh, well - onwards and upwards.
I also discovered, completely by accident, that the dual katana build is a hell of a lot of fun.

Okay, either Hino-Enma is literally fucking impossible, or I'm doing something very badly wrong.
As much as I'd like to say it's the former, I think we all know it's the latter.
So, um... any tips, boys n' Bichii?
Everything I've seen online says, "Just learn her moveset", which is easier said than done when the sprint of shame from the shrine to the boss arena often lasts longer than the fight itself!
All her moves utterly decimate my health and ki. I keep finding myself stunlocked into oblivion, while the stupid yokai puddles left behind by half her attacks don't exactly help.
Oh, and the damage I do to her with dual katanas is laughably trifling - my regular sword's high stance heavy attack is more effective, but only marginally.
Anyway, I think I may have FREED FROM THIS MORTAL COIL permanently seared into my retinas, so if anyone has any advice, it would be gratefully received!

UlythiumI can't remember what resources you have access to this early, but Anit-paralytic needles to cure paralysis, they can be used even when paralyzed, shurikens (and presumably other thrown items) rip her Ki apart when she's flying, salt causes heavy Ki damage to Yokai in general. Nioh is very much a "Use your items" type of game. The archer set (I'm reading there's a full set in the level) has high paralysis resistance and should also be reasonably high level since you find it in the level itself. If you stagger her, be careful while attacking her, she'll try to grab you as she recovers. Despite using paralysis, she's apparently weak to Lightning, if you have anything that can attack her with it or imbue your weapons that could help. Don't be shy about summoning an AI helper (the blue graves) if there are any around, it does take Ochoko Cups but you should have a few. Don't get greedy (general rule of Soulslikes, but yeah). Utilise both blocking and dodging, hit her once or twice, repeat. Yokai puddles should be dispellable by using your Ki pulse inside them (I don't think you need a skill for it). Check your inventory for any higher-level weapons or armour you can use. As a general rule, don't get too attached to individual weapons and armour until you can soul match, and even then, on NG it's usually better to swap in higher-levelled stuff. Soul matching is costly and has an upper cap too, so eventually you'll have to switch anyway.

Thanks very much for that, JuniorFE. You're a true scholar. Item usage has always been my kryptonite in these games - I invariably found that trying to use items during a boss fight (as opposed to right outside the fog gate) would upset my combat rhythm and get me killed, so I pretty much stopped trying. Guess it's time to get back on that horse, huh?

Hino-Enma is dead! Thanks again for your input, Junior - the anti-paralysis needles were a massive help, and I was definitely getting too greedy in my prior attempts. No doubt I'll be calling on your expertise again before long

No doubt I'll be calling on your expertise again before long Yay That said, my expertise with the first game mostly stops a few bosses later, any tips after that will probably amount to quoting the Wiki/other guides and "Use Sloth"... Now if you were playing the sequel, well... I'd still probably end up saying what other guides say, just without having to Google it first

Oh, don't worry - the sequel's up next! (Well, another DMC game is up next, but I'm planning to play Nioh 2 thereafter.)
Of course, this is all heavily dependent upon my [questionable] ability to beat the original game first...

Of course, this is all heavily dependent upon my [questionable] ability to beat the original game first... If its any comfort, the second game becomes much easier after a rough early start. This comes from someone who has beaten both +dlc. If you ever get stuck I can also chip in for some advice in this thread . One advice I would give is to not neglect omnyou magic. Try and go straight for the Sloth talisman if possible.

Until Umi-Bozu And as rajin says above, onymo magic is a huge help - especially sloth, which is as close as Nioh gets to a Demon's Souls soul-arrow-easy-mode. I love sloth.

If you’re planning on playing the sequel, don’t get too used to it because they nerfed it into the shadow dimension.

I think it was nerfed in the first game too. It's still usable in certain situations - mostly mini-bosses.

Even pre-nerf, I got to a point when I got gud enuff to drop it in favour of other things. I think I ended up with carnage, steel, defence debuff and offence debuff as my loadout. Something like hat anyway. But it gets to the point where you can cast like three or four spells on yourself before you go into a boss room and melt them, so you don’t need sloth anymore.

That's much more creative and effective use of Omnyo than I engaged in! Except, now that I think of it, when doing those maps that are fights against really tough individual humans (they were in both, right? It's all blurry now). I buffed myself to fuck for them.

There are/were some really good combos. The 'increased amrita absorbtion' one, in conjunction with a few gear perks, used to let you pop living weapon and keep it going pretty much indefinitely if you kept killing people.
Sloth is a good helping hand for a while but when you get used to the game it takes up a slot that could be better spent on something else.
Although not so much in Nioh, but in Nioh 2 its just not worth it, especially since they buffed lightning.

Although not so much in Nioh, but in Nioh 2 its just not worth it, especially since they buffed lightning. Another game breaking mechanic is to simply save all larger amrita crystals and pop them at difficult bossfights so you can spam living weapon at any notice. I think it required the rare crystals so mainly usefull in the later half of the game. Sloth while nerfed in Nioh 1, is still great. In Nioh 2 it still can be usefull but the shield? talisman in combination with a axe is really overpowered against most bosses. Since it allows you to soak up x damage before it breaks. Every weapon has its uses in both games. If you get stuck on human bosses, the spear in middle/high stance is perfect. The axe is good against bosses that are easy to guard break. Dual swords for when you need mobility. Longsword for a middle ground approach. Kurisagama I think can allow you to stunlock and break bosses, I never did this since with Sloth it kinda ruined the game on release. The Odachi is a bit meh, but really nice against clusters of normal mobs. Tonfa is amazing in general if you know how to string combo's.

Yeah, I always had one on the hot bar.
Shame they nerfed the shit out of it in the sequel, to the point transformations were kind of useless to do anything other than use it as a 'get off me' button.

I've never used magic in any game that has it, from Souls to Skyrim; however, it sounds as though I ought to break that tendency here!

There are two non-combat trees, ninja and magic. I found magic more useful than ninja but there are a few ninja arts worth putting points into (and vice versa). But, yeah, if you have a combat build magic isnt so much about throwing fireballs at people but casting buffs/debuffs.
And, yeah, Sloth still works in Nioh 2, they just bumped up the cost and decreased it effectiveness so I dont think it was really worth a slot. I found it was better to try and proc lightning if you really wanted to slow something down (elemental damage being generally a very effective).

Does anyone know how to respec skill points in Nioh? (The ones that unlock new weapon abilities, I mean - not the use of Amrita to gain levels.) From what I can tell with a bit of Googling, they changed this mechanic between Nioh 1 and Nioh 2, and I can't seem to find a definitive answer on how it works in the first game. I've already spent 10k on the Book of Reincarnation so I could level up Body, Heart, Skill etc. differently, moving from a sword build to a dual-sword build, but all the sword skills I'd purchased still appear to be unlocked. Of course, I could just be missing something simple - it wouldn't be the first time.
