If I had any idea how to add lightning to my arsenal in any form I might try again. Maybe I'll watch some more Youtube videos.

I can, and I think I have. Got fed up in the next main mission after Enenra, the one where you meet the serpent women. Just doesn't feel very rewarding, unless you find 16,000 almost identical swords rewarding. Fired up Dark Souls III instead, sorry! The 16.000 swords are basically "souls" in a form you can't lose. Go to a shrine, "make offering", turn them into souls, level up.

I don't recall if they're available at that point (they should be though, if water is available for Enenra) but you should be able to imbue lightning with Onmyo Magic, a few times at least. Fair warning, if I'm thinking about the right level the boss is an absolute bitch, stonewalled me for a very long time and given the amount of stuff I saw on the interwebs I don't think I'm the only one... I get divine rice when I do that, not souls (amrita?).

The loot system is it's weakest point imo but as has been said, view them as shit you can sell for souls and use it all to level. Invest a bit into magic for lightning talismans and projectiles as well.
Also, kill red grave marker spirits for cups, use cups to summon blue friends. Can make it a lot more fun if you're feeling a bit of malaise.

I'd also like to use onmyo magic, but I understand I need to use certain items to gain onmyo skill points, and I don't think I have any such items. It's all *so* convoluted, and I'm a bit overwhelmed. When for example I see all the moves I can learn in the samurai skill tree (or is it the sword one?), my aging brain goes "can you *really* be bothered to learn many of those?".

By now you should have picked up a lighnting sword/hammer/poking stick. Failing that, there is the worst explained aspect of the whole game: assigning attributes to skills
When you get a skill point, go to the shiftling menu. Theres stuff like arcana of lighting, arcana of serpent, arcana of fire and whatnot. Unlock arcana of lightning. Go to skill customisation, highlight a skill for your weapon, press square and choose 'arcana of lightning'. Now every time you do that skill, you hit with lightning.
You can swap these skills out on the fly, so you can swap it with arcana of fire if you get surrounded by water enemies.
It took me sooooooo long to work that out.

The other thing that I'm finding odd (coming from Soulsy games) is the levelling. Every time I level, I struggle to find a reason *not* to put it into Heart, as that seems to do pretty much everything for my build. Is it really that simple? (As an unexpected bonus, I do enjoy how much damage I do with bows with this policy.)

No, you should mostly get amrita! I would guess that at least 40% of my leveling up have been “paid” with loot.

(As an unexpected bonus, I do enjoy how much damage I do with bows with this policy.) It really depends on your weapon. I use an Odachi, which is remodeled (at the blacksmith) to scale best with stamina, which I wanted so I can use heavy armor. I only started putting points into heart after level 200. Edit: But yeah, for sword users, leveling up Heart is the way to go. Some armor as well as your guardian spirit often need other points in other attributes so that their special effects become active.

Well yeah, I use the standard sword, so Heart gives me extra weapon damage, faster ki recovery, some health, some equip load(?), and a kitchen sink.

Found this back in the Elden Ring thread, you found your answer but I might as well post it in its proper thread Going to ask this here as there's no thread for it and most of the experts are here... What should I level in Nioh 2? Been putting everything into Heart so far, since that boosts my weapon of choice *and* increases health, ki etc a bit too. Doesn't seem worth levelling anything else, apart from a little bit of the first stat, the main health one. It's been a while since I played, but from what I remember (and a quick wiki check): Levelling up Constitution (HP) and Stamina (HP and Equip Load) is not something to neglect. It may not be as important as in Elden Ring but you can't do much of anything if you're dead Most armour also has stat requirements for its special effects to trigger. Depending on your preferred armour sets you should level up Strength and/or Skill. Those two stats are also stated to improve your Ki Pulse but I'm not sure how big the improvement is. Onmyo Magic should be about as important as it was in the original (Sloth Talisman ftw) so even a purely melee build should put a few points in Magic if only for the debuffs and elemental damage you can inflict. I don't have as much experience with Ninjutsu but if you find it useful by all means invest a little into Dexterity as well. That's about all I know. Others with more experience will probably be able to help more 😅

Yeah thanks Junior, I did read that. Then went back to the game, and continued to find no reason not to put everything into Heart.

There's so fucking much in this game it really wouldn't surprise me if I never knew this.

The skills turn dual swords into a proccing BEAST. All of the heavy skills are fast, multihitting attacks so if you add arcana of lightning to the Spin To Win skill, you can proc big boob snake lady in one attack, for example.

I MUST have done this. Surely to god. It is starting to come back a bit. Maybe I just completely forgot.
Damn. I need to fire it up again later and continue to refamiliarise myself with it. Probably because I ended up with an Onmyo build, so I just used a shit load of talismans to buff my weapons anyway I didn't bother adding elemental damage to skill attacks.
Mind you I can't even remember what skill attacks I've got assigned to my glaive or staff.

So here, for example, I dont have imbue fire on my sword but I do have arcana of fire set on Spin To Win. You can see my swords set on fire every time I do it and eventually big balls sets on fire and starts taking fire DOT (the orange number that ticks up)

What does proccing mean? Something triggering, basically. A lot of statuses in Soulsborne games (Bleed, poison etc) trigger after building them up with repeated hits with weapons or spells, hence dual swords hitting multiple times makes them proc/trigger statuses easily. The full definition, for anyone interested: Proc is an acronym for a programmed random occurrence that refers to a weapon, item or ability activating with the "Chance on Hit" or "Chance on Use" effect (an ability or a spell).

Well, you, Bongo, Lou and Junior. Well not so much me tbh, I got stuck on a boss early on and never really picked it back up. Most of what I know past that is from the wiki I should pick it back up, really, but there's just so much to play and so little time...

Sometimes you get lucky and grab a weapon that has innate lightning damage built in. Or get it/its forging blueprint from a sidequest reward. I remember in the first one you got a legendary lightning katana('s smithing text, the katana itself you get a copy of from the story) very early on by helping Ginchiyo with something and it ripped things apart for a good while.

Also look for shrines near ledges/rivers/other sites of instadeath. A lot of people will equip good gear and throw themselves off a ledge, so if there are a *lot* of graves by a shrine, its always worth farming revanants for gear for a bit.
Theres one on the first level by a ravine, near a bridge, that you can farm for ages and always has revanants dropping decent loot (loot you want is another story).
