These games might not be in development hell, but they're definitely in legal hell.
The rights to Steam hit Spintires - as well as the fate of millions of dollars in revenue for spin-off sequels Mudrunner and Snowrunner - are the focus of several major legal claims between Saber Interactive and the game's original publisher Oovee, Eurogamer can reveal.

I found it amusing that they drop that paragraph in outlining that the chap at the publishers is involved in crypto schemes and had published a get rich quick book, then leave you work out which side you might sympathise with.

To be honest I was already heading down that path in the previous paragraph when names like Zane and Devin popped up.

On the games themselves I've never played Spintires but have played some Mudrunner but have spent a ridiculous amount of time playing Snowrunner, mostly in 4 player co-op. It's a fantastic game if you're the type of person it appeals to but that's not everyone that's for sure.
I do wish that playing co-op would complete the contracts for other players in the session though, it only does the host's campaign so we ended up each picking a region and switching hosts when we did one.

Yeah, they’re incredible games and I’ve rinsed Snowrunner and half the DLC’s to death. There were issues with the original coder and the publisher right from the start iirc.

I just dip in every now and then and just do a delivery. I still haven’t left Alaska yet. It’s going to last me years

I am a huge Snowrunner fan as well, but I really wish they update their physics engine for the next game - driving on tarmac is just hilariously bad, and why can I never go faster than 30mph?
Did‘t keep me from buying it twice, and it never gets uninstalled, mind.

I'm in the middle of a Hard Mode playthrough, but I've started to flag a little after doing 86% of Michigan (left the log missions until I can bring back the Cat) and just reaching Alaska. I think when I did Alaska in my previous game, I just used the snow chains for everything, both off and on road, is that about right?
They are great games though. I never played Spintires, but Mudrunner was a revelation. The missions were so basic, but they usually meant you'd be ploughing up the same ruts three different times as you went back and forth for the logs, getting further and further into the shit each time. Snowrunner landscape doesn't keep the deformation as much (thankfully enough, probably).
Might need to set Snowrunner aside for a while though; treat each region as a separate game.

I think when I did Alaska in my previous game, I just used the snow chains for everything, both off and on road, is that about right? Been a couple of months since I've played, and progression is going to be different on hard mode but while offroad UOD-IIs, and especially mud tyres (tho normal progression you might not have those by the time you reach alaska) are going to be better in deep snow, chains aren't terrible in it. Chains are essentially offroad tyres with a "don't skid on ice" flag, to the game snow is just white mud, and in Alaska I think there's only a couple of stretches where chains would be necessary.
But yeah I've definitely done all of alaksa on chains & I think I'd definitely do hard mode on chains as snow progress is just a bit slower than with mud, or the better offroad, tyres - wheras offroad/mud tyres on adversely cambered ice covered ashpalt comes with significant rollover risk that's penalised on hard mode
edit: just had a look at the maps again, north port = whatever you like, except that contract in the bottom right with the mud pit from hell where you need every ounce of mud/snow ability, mountain river = definitely chains, white valley = would lean toward chains due to number of roads with a sketchy camber, pedro bay = dealers choice, despite more ice around I seem to remember it being all quite flat

Cheers, Matt! Makes sense to use chains as much as possible I guess, what with mounting damage from sliding into guardrails, and the rollover risk you mention. Appreciate the thorough reply

Downloaded Snow Runner a few months ago via Game Pass, and bounced off it hard for some reason. I was looking for an alternative to Euro Truck Simulator 2, now that I no longer have a gaming PC, and something just didn’t click.
I’m downloading it again now: it’s surely worth another attempt..?

Well!
I had apparently left it with the beginner pickup truck straddling a small stream, and that was that.
A few seconds of AWD sorted that out and I almost immediately stumbled across a flatbed truck which I had not remembered I was supposed to be searching for!
An hour or so later, and I had transported the required metal and wood to get the bridge fixed, and the world is now my lobster!
The main gameplay seems to be: drive around, open up various Ass Creed towers, uncover missions, get ‘er done.
It’s alright, this. Not sure why I abandoned it before.

It’s alright, this. Not sure why I abandoned it before. There was a bug at launch which I’m sure they’ve fixed but watch out for it. Basically if you didn’t complete the tutorial (and I got kicked from it early before the Alaska part), the side quests where you get to build bridges etc didn’t show up. So for example, the first quest I got was to transport the fuel trailer to the factory, but when I got to where the bridge was down, there was no option to repair it. I spent about six hours trying to get that trailer through all the crappy secondary trails instead, thinking that was the game. I did it but it was just incredibly challenging. So I’m sure that’s not possible any more but just in case…

I just started this the other night after having it sit on my xbox for months untouched. What an absolute bloody gem this is. Such a sweet way to spend about an hour killing time.

Anyone have any tips on how to uh, NOT roll the Scout that I just found? I've rolled it 3x in about 5 minutes which is annoying because it's so much more fun than the pick-up.

I rolled it into a ravine within 5 minutes of getting it my last game but one. I couldn't get it out and the place was too inaccessible to take a crane to. I was playing on hard mode which charges you for Recovery so I left it there.
You just have to be very careful, especially in bare areas where there are no winch points. The good news is that it has an autonomous winch which can be used when flipped over (you should buy this for the pick-up too when it unlocks).
Basically flipping over is the Scout's M.O. Roll with it

Sheeeeeeeeeeit, need this. The PS store lists it as a PS4 game, so I guess it’s both generations. Snowrunner looks so good I don’t think it really matters.

So the new one is out and so far it's...super underwhelming. There's some neat additions, but the content is absolutely threadbare and linear. Drive to this point, press a button, drive to this point, press another button, there's barely any vehicles, very few maps and close to nothing to do in the world. It should get better with age/DLC as the other games did, but this feels distinctly early access right now. The exploration aspect is ok, but I think I still prefer lugging cargo around, and you essentially are doing exactly that anyway with some of the missions, just not as dynamically. It's also way more gatekept than other games, you're effectively locked into linear missions with no way to just quickly jump into free roam (which also gets linearly unlocked as you go) or try to tackle something you're hopelessly unprepared for.
The good news is though the new maps are very good with lots of cliffs and fords and things

Oh dear I did think I’d wait before jumping in. I’ve bought and loved every Runner game released but this did feel a little DLCish in previews. Love the core of their games to bits, small developer though I guess.
