Greetings, Fonters. Geekers? FG'ers.
Dr John is one of those artists that pops up (ok, maybe not so much nowadays) periodically. Reruns of Jools Holland, documentaries about music from the Southern states and so on. He strikes me as someone whose music I'd like to investigate further, but from what I can tell, he's had more changes of style than Bowie.
So can anyone suggest a good album to start with? There is one called 'The Best' from 2020 on Amazon which is probably a safe bet, and for less than nine quid I can get one of those 'Original album series' box sets, which includes "Gris-Gris," "Babylon," "The Sun Moon & Herbs," "Dr. Johns Gumbo" and "In The Right Place."
Either of them sound like a good stepping off point, or is there a classic album that I should start with?

Iām no connoisseur but In The Right Place is one of the few vinylseses I own and actually put on, so Iād say start there.

For my money if you have the time to dedicate those little box sets are a great way to get into an artist that a best-of can't compare to, but it's if you have the time.
They do sometimes pick the wrong albums for them though. Have you done a 'ranking Dr John' Google? If you look at a couple such lists and the wee box set follows them well then I'd say that's a safe bet.
I've tried bits and bobs of Dr John but haven't had time to delve properly, I don't think you'll be disappointed, he sounds great.

Ymmv but Iāve found the best way to get into an artist is to listen to the āThis is [whoever]ā Spotify/tidal/Apple Music/whatever playlist and then jump on the album for whichever tracks jump out at you.
Someone like Dr John has a pretty extensive and varied discography, so you might dig one albums sound over another.

Iād say that Apple do an excellent version of this - they have āessentialsā, ānext stepsā and ādeep cutsā playlists along with stuff like influences. And even acts inspired by the artist! Iāve found it a great way to find new music in recent years.

Watch Treme, it's a great sampler for music from that region and he guest stars in it once or twice.
