PS360 era was probably the last time. Saturn and Dreamcast eras still the best years for fighting games though. Maybe, but with this level of budget and top tier visibility? All these games feel like statements now and complete packages in a way I don't think has ever been approached before.

All these games feel like statements now and complete packages in a way I don't think has ever been approached before. Games like Virtua Fighter 5, Dead or Alive 4 and Tekken 6 felt like statements that fighting games weren’t dead, and Street Fighter IV in particular blew up HUGE. That one in particular revived the fighting game scene. Then you had things like Blazblue and Mortal Kombat 9 also having big moments. Last gen felt like a slump period because games like Street Fighter V and Killer Instinct experimented with the Games as a Service model, and truthfully, if SF doesn’t hit, the whole genre suffers.

I don't totally agree that SF is the litmus test for fighters now, I think the relative failure of SFV and more notably MvCI gave other fighters more chance to breathe and find a bigger audience. Case in point Tekken 7 selling ridiculous amounts with such a long tail. Obviously MK always sells ridiculous amounts but it was interesting to see many fighting game devs last gen come out of the shadow of Capcom and everyone seems to have raised their game for this gen, which is only a good thing for the genre. Now we have KI getting a 10th anniversary refresh and let's face it most likely a sequel as Iron Galaxy are very much available now.

Some cool returning characters, I was hoping they would reveal more new characters by now honestly, but perhaps that's something still being worked on for closer to release. 32 at launch is pretty decent. I don't know what to make of the metaverse style avatars for the new mode though. It's an ugly design to me. But I do hope the mode has a little more to it than just a pampered treasure battle mode. I loved Quest Mode in VF4 Evo where you're going arcade to arcade battling AI for customisation items. Arcade Quest sounds similar with some kind of storyline about the player making it to the top of tournaments. It's not dissimilar to what I had thought VF6 should have given there's no story mode there to talk about. I had imagined that with RGG studio involved, you could have the environments from the Yakuza games in there and build out an RPG lite mode wondering around building your rep competing in local arcades and tournaments to make it to win the grand tournament.

The entire roster has been leaked if you look for it btw - it was leaked over evo weekend as some folks accidentally saw an almost final build and someone took a photo of the character select. So rest assured there are new characters not yet officially revealed.
The avatar mode says single player, right? So we don’t know if they’re going to be incorporated as a battle hub type affair like SF6, but it feels like such an obvious thing to do that it would be a bigger surprise if they didn’t do it.
Also Steve’s accent is hilarious.

What is going on in Japan? Is there some weird fad where they think white guys have started having middle-aged womens 'speak to the manager' haircuts?
I play Paul and.... yeah.. what the fuck?

Fantastic replay feature here that allows you to take control at any point and play to see what you could do differently at a given moment.
Whole bunch of news out now actually. Out in Jan for one.

Though I must admit I'm not a fan of the increased use of weapons in the game.
I know Yoshimitsu always had one but that suited his character

Looks like they wanted to keep Noctis in the game but didnt have the rights so they moved him to a new character. Which is fine! Hope the last one is a new character too.

Here’s another newcomer; seems to be related to the Mishimas in some way..? Don’t love her design, but her fighting style seems cool at least.

She kinda looks like Zafina and Kazuya had a daughter. The fighting style kinda matches too. Though I haven't played the last game so my knowledge of the story isn't the best.
Meh, whatever her origins she seems kinda boring

Seems like she is Heihachi's daughter? The intros with Jin and Kazuya can't be a coincidence

"Have a taste of capitulation" is a weird line. I misread that as “capitalism” at first and wondered if she was some kind of successful business person.

I'm upset there's no new VF and always will be. I've all these thoughts in my head of what a new VF would look like too. Naturally the series doesn't have a lot of the visual flair like Tekken does so it's harder to get a big mass appeal, but I think if they took the approach of really becoming a 3D fighter with the best netcode around, it could gain a following. Sega wont do it tho.

Final Showdown was 13 years ago now Obviously it hasn't be announced but I'm pretty sure a new VF is being worked on mainly because of the response to Ultimate Showdown. All signs seem to point to Sega's SUPER GAME.

I've read a couple of interviews with Harada where he's basically been coaching Seiji Aoki of AM2 on getting himself out there at tournaments and stuff to help grow VF5ES. I think he wants to see a new VF as much as anyone, really.

Oh for sure, Harada LOVES VF. I mean Tekken was inspired by his love of it. It's crazy how advanced VF was in every way back in the day, disregarding VF3:TB which was quite a step down. I don't even think it was made by the OG team that did VF2, was it? On
VF2 is still for me that game where I thought games couldn't look any better after seeing it in an arcade. I'm always amazed how good it looked on the Saturn too a console that was not good at 3D.
