I really didn't enjoy the combat in RDR2 so would always just spend my time playing Poker. I'd have loved a non-combat option more often to be able to progress the story.

Crafting. Good god, I hate crafting, so much. I'm a mystical assassin! I specialise in assassinating mystically! I don't specialise in gathering or cultivating or combining the ingredients I need to employ my mysticism - that's someone else's profession! And I'll pay them - for THEIR SPECIALISATION! Now let me get on with my murder-by-meditation! Slight exception for low-item, on-the-spot crafting like you get in the (mostly terrible) Alone In The Dark 5 (2008) - finding yourself in trouble from a crowd of ghouls with only a empty plastic bottle, a knife and the gas tank of a nearby car to hand... and quickly building a molotov cocktail to stop the crowd from advancing... now that's the on-the-spot improv I love. The way no one admits that pre-rendered backgrounds, or at least a fixed camera, actually allows for a great more visibility than a third person camera I miss this in gaming. Having very specific camera angles really can enhance immersion by allowing the creator to carefully script the whole experience. I've always liked pre-rendered backgrounds too. To this day I still find some of the work done in games like PS1 Final Fantasy games or Resident Evil just as "believable" as some of recent games. There's something about the combination of the backgrounds and the perspective shifts that still gives the environments a realistic feel. Just as a brief note to steifybobbins and Psiloc, actually, there's a bunch of indie and not-so-indie devs still using fixed multicam - we have lots of lovely lists of them here at Fixed Camera Appreciation Society. I can recommend a few if you're interested. =D It's a somewhat neglected niche, but there's more of 'em coming out each year...!

Tbh I can't argue against that reasoning - it doesn't actually trigger anything in me, but looking at the forums elsewhere most people are gushing over the new WoW talent trees, and that "place a point when you level " thing seems to be a big attractor for many. Last two games that I really engaged with that had talent trees were probably AC Valhalla and Cyberpunk 2077. In AC I very quickly got bored and just hit the auto allocate option. That tree was especially bad for having really dull choices. Cyberpunk 2077 almost worked for me, but in all honesty I find it really, really hard to get excited by small crit chance increases. As a counterpoint, I actually quite like the talent trees in Skyrim. They're segregated so it's easy to specialise in one particular area, and each individual tree is just small enough to not be an overwhelming mess. I think that quote works for me as well, though I guess it barely works for me rather than the other way around. But considering that damage and armor upgrades on equipment are frequent, the upgrades from the skill tree are comparatively less impactful. For me it's more about choice of skill trees underlining my chosen approach and making me a bit better at this or that. Though I guess it may be more important for Hacking? Haven't replaced my deck or operating system or whatever it was, since I got the first one, so I wouldn't know how impactful that is in comparison to the skill tree.

Salt & Sacrifice's skill tree. Made worse than it should be by having a scrollable viewing window the size of a postage stamp.
Yeah fuck skill trees like this. This image is actually giving me choice paralysis and I'm not even familiar with the fucking game it's from.

Grim Dawn has something similar, but the Constellations are split up into many different ones and you only slowly get access to more of them. Per constellation it's usually just 3-6 nodes or so. Sometimes a bit more. It's still hard to wrap your head around at first, but it's manageable.

If I was a Eurogamer reviewer, I'd have slapped an 'Avoid' on both of those game. That's repulsive

Hold on now, I actually like Grim Dawn's idea at a glance, if only because of the gradual access. I know nothing about that game, but if each individual node also has a bit of uniqueness (i.e it's not just "Damage with One-Handed Swords +1.7%" or something) then it would basically be a more focused, less messy version of AC Valhalla's, which sounds pretty good, actually!

As much as anything I just find skill "trees" visually cluttered, making them harder to read than they need to be.
I much prefer the format of, say, the skills in Witcher 3 (just reminded of that as I'm replaying currently).
I mean it's not perfect and some of the skills are still utterly boring but it's more readable.
I'm also weirdly okay with Skyrim's trees.
Of course, both games, and Witcher especially, have that issue where it's easy to make shit builds, so you end up having to consult a guide to really know what you're doing. As mentioned previously, Im not a fan of that aspect of gaming.

I never did the Blood and Wine expansion so want to go back to it now. But reacquainting myself with all the skills and such is going to be a real pain in the arse.

I'm in the same boat, last I played W3 was Hearts of Stone and never again since. Been meaning to give B&W a try but I'm not going to have a clue what I'm doing

What I hate about Witcher 3’s skill tree is that it only lets you equip 12 skills, but you keep earning upgrade points endlessly past that. I would say it’s almost worse than Valhalla’s tree, because as useless as those 1.7% upgrades are, at least every skill point you earn there is added to the tally. I’d rather never unlock everything than continue unlocking, but never using those upgrades.

Yeah, I'd agree with that. E.Y.E. had both the more impactful upgrades and also just the really incremental ones you'd get from Attributes, Cybertech and so on. You could keep at upgrading for a very long time.

Not a gameplay mechanic but something the devs have put in,
Games that have "would you like to create a save" when you first play them.
Surely that's a given? Even more pointless when it also says you can't play the game without a save file.

But in terms of presentation I find it much easier to read. None of this "oh look the tree is a constellation!" bollocks.

"Create a save game?" Yes "Save here?" Yes "Over write previous save?" Yes "Game saved!" Ok "Now navigate out of the save menu" Fuck you. Meanwhile over in New Vegas: Whoops, you used the Quicksave function? That's unacceptable. Autosaves? Haha, what were you thinking!?
And the worst thing is that I don't remember having any trouble whatsoever with the save system on my first playthrough.
So many corrupted saves...

Fast-paced action games that have slow sections. Spider-Man forcing me to be Peter Parker and walk around the shelter or the lab can fuck off. Stop ruining my power fantasy.

Everyone knows unskippable cutscenes suck. What's even worse? In fighting games, unskippable cutscenes in the middle of the fucking fight. One of the worst ideas in the history of game design.

Death stranding randomly deciding that you need to confirm skipping a cut scene. If it happened every time it'd be less annoying somehow, but it lets you press x to skip most of the time, then just decides you'll need to confirm this one that you've already seen countless times.
Of course the default option also isn't "ok", so you need to move to that instead of just mashing a button.

Witcher 3 prompting you to confirm skipping even a single line of dialogue. So if you want to skip through dialogue you have to spam the button like a maniac. What were they thinking?
edit: making you hold the button instead of just tapping it is all the rage these days, I dread the day when they make you hold the button to skip a line of dialogue...

Not a game mechanic as such, but “Digital Deluxe Editions”. Pay extra for a digital art book and soundtrack level stuff. Who actually buys these?

When it’s just digital artbook and soundtrack, I do not (although those are what I want most out of physical deluxe editions, funnily enough). But when it’s bundled with a loads of DLC, be it a season pass or even just a bunch of cosmetics, I have a tendency to go for those. If it’s a game I REALLY want, I might go for it day one, like a Final Fantasy or something. But often, I just wait for a sale. Usually if the DDE is cheaper than the retail standard edition, I buy in, but I also often wait for it to get to the $25-35 price range. Sorry sharky. I’m part of the problem.

Extra game content I get - season passes and so forth. But when it’s a collection of JPEGs and MP3s it’s just money for vapour.

Entire factions/groups of NPCs turning hostile immediately after an infraction. It's completely unrealistic and you should be able to do naughty things as long as you don't get caught

I mean, when I ate all the cookies at Christmas the entire household immediately turned against me, so its not always unrealistic.
