I'm not wild about being thrown into surprise boss fights with no chance to heal, save, restock, upgrade, and so on.

I think its a little more irksome because you know they must have thought about it and made them unskippable on purpose. I get the idea, but I'm not being held hostage to some scrolling text when I'm in a hurry.

I'm not wild about being thrown into surprise boss fights with no chance to heal, save, restock, upgrade, and so on. I can’t remember a specific game that does this, but I know I’ve experienced it. If the idea is to panic the player, then yes it bloody well does. By making you fear losing your evenings progress with a surprise death.

Honestly not a massive fan of boss fights, full stop.

I'm fine with them if they are interesting tactical fights with a good number of participants and complexity, or just some basic "bossfight" in some ARPG, but twitching around in 3rd person isn't for me. At least not when any wrong movement might mean death (and perhaps lots of wasted time to really rub it in).

The worst is when you have to wait for the boss to go through a specific cycle to become vulnerable, then you have to do a whole load of actions to get a hit in. You fuck it up and you're waiting (and probably taking hits) until you can have another go.

Also, unavoidable hits at the start of a boss battle can get to fuck.

I love bosses. Fundamental part of video games for me
Puzzle bosses are a bit shit though

I love good bosses, but I hate bad bosses. Sadly most bosses are shit and most games could be improved by deleting most of their bosses.

I prefer puzzle bosses, but don’t mind boss battles generally, although I do have many complaints…
What I hate is if your view is obscured, or half the challenge involving being able to point the camera in the right direction. That bloody early boss in Dark Souls with the additional two dogs in a cramped space in which the camera doesn’t know where to go, that was the worst. Possibly the worst boss in any game I can think of and I don’t believe that was intentionally designed to be the ache it was. I think they just didn’t know how to fix it and just laughed.
I’m also not a fan of unavoidable hits, although that’s rare.
I get trigged by enemies that have specific attack animations, but can also gracefully spin around 180 as they’re animating and still hit you. I find clunkier, slower games tend to fall foul of that.
Also, homing projectiles that aren’t really meant to be homing, like giant boulders been thrown from distance. Left 4 Dead, I’m looking at you…

Repeat bosses are a particular gripe of mine, unless it’s done in an interesting way, but just throwing bosses at you that you’ve already killed to pad out the ending (I’m looking at you several Zelda games) is really shit.

I don’t mind the sub-clause of that: the boss that becomes a relatively standard enemy to prove how rough and tough you are now

Zelda still does that, but I guess it depends on how fun those battles are. I’ll fight any Lynel I find because that’s a great duel. Things like the Talos aren’t exactly amazing, but the reward makes it more appealing.

I really like boss fights in general - just not a fan of being ambushed by them, is all! Mild Persona 5 Royal spoilers: I'd just beaten the last mini-boss in Shido's Palace, and was heading for the Treasure. My party wasn't in great shape, but that didn't seem to matter - all that remained was to establish the Treasure's location and get out of there. Unfortunately for me, Akechi-kun(t) had other ideas... and next thing I knew, I was in a three-phase boss battle.

Hate that in most games upping the difficulty basically means bullet sponge enemies. The Resi games do this a lot.

Yeah, you really notice it when they didn't get the balance right. On Hard difficulty in Opposing Force for instance some enemy types seem just a little too beefy in comparison to Half Life.

Ugh, can’t mention bullet sponges without mentioning The Division. I so wanted to like that game, but even the slightly tougher enemies out in free roam were like shooting Kevlar with a BB gun, and the actual named boss enemies were just ridiculous.

Little flying enemies. Whatever game you're playing now has them and they're the most annoying ones in it Bumping this because of Starfield (minor early game creature… there are flying pterodactyl type enemies on Gagarin that spot you and then stay ridiculously high and out of range- but you’re still spotted so you can’t tell if regular enemies have seen you. And then if they do attack, it’s from directly above which is a pain in first person camera. And they don’t hit hard but they cause a status effect. Absolute flapping bastards.

This is a really tricky one to get right but pacing of tutorials is a gripe for me. Both ones that throw a millions mechanic at you in the first five minutes and ones that are still teaching you how to play an hour in.

Night vision in games is a tricky one. It's usually really helpful if you spend a lot of time in the dark so you want to use it but also kind of ruins the look of everything making it all green and bland

I'm not wild about being thrown into surprise boss fights with no chance to heal, save, restock, upgrade, and so on. DS3 dropped you into one of the harder boss fights immediately after you beat another boss. That mechanic can get right in the sea.

For me, it depends upon how much the player stands to lose (in terms of time and progress) if they die to the surprise boss, with some examples being more egregious than others.
Still not a fan overall.

Automatically enabled subtitles. The way PS5 has system level options to default to graphics, resolution or performance mode, let me set it so games never start with subtitles again. I hate having to wait until a game gives me options menu access (which is common in JRPGs, so add that to the list) to disable subtitles.

I'd be happy with that, I'm always turning them on 😅 Even for films.

Rubberband AI. Seems more often now games use it to simply cheat rather than keep the race interesting.

I'm sure this has been mentioned, but damage on contact (as opposed to an attack) with an enemy. Hollow Knight is the most recent offender that I've played and it really fucks the game up for me
