I'm sure this has been mentioned, but damage on contact (as opposed to an attack) with an enemy. Hollow Knight is the most recent offender that I've played and it really fucks the game up for me I don’t mind that, but it is game dependant. In a platformer, sure. In something that tries to be realistic, no thank you. In Hollow Knight I think it works as once you can dodge, it adds a genuine thrill to the combat. Every movement is a risk, but the payoff is great when you time a dodge just right and cut through a boss.

I might’ve done this already but when games only allow you to have one save/profile.
Is it that bad to let me have multiple playthroughs or character builds?

Games immobilising you for a second after a longer fall (e.g. Castlevania SotN, Bloodstained, Hollow Knight). Especially annoying with Bloodstained's dash kick.
Just let me move without pointless interruptions, like in Mario, Sonic, Mega Man. What's wrong with that?
edit: related to that, fall damage in games that don't need it (i.e. most games). Borderlands 2 made a big brain design decision by just deleting fall damage entirely. It made the game better and has since never been missed.

I dunno, I prefer something I can react to that isn't a giant anus slamming down on me(being excessively facetious here). Straying slightly to close to a boss as I try to attack it and being punished feels bad at times. If they're all made of electricity then fine, but they never are

Oh yeah, I was more commenting on the nerd girlfriend than the game mechanics thing.
But also, sorry bro.

Contact damage is pretty standard considering Mario, Sonic, Mega Man, etc all have it. Since movement is one of the main aspects of a platformer, not walking into an enemy seems perfectly fine. They're not all made of electricity but they are all made of evil
Dark Souls has made you soft, Danno.

Something I don't get is, gamers can come up with load of good examples but devs will keep adding them to games (sure there is some devs will go through this thread and can't see a problem and think "this is fuckin gold!"
Sometimes I game will be a mess but sometimes devs have not much of clue when it comes to problem mechanics (it could be they are too close to the game and can't see the faults?)

I know somebody who thinks every game should allow quick saves, but also you should only be able to save at bonfires in Souls games. He’s passionately argued both to the point that not even pointing out his hypocrisy is a valid argument, apparently.

You don't really save at bonfires do you? The game is saving your progress constantly. I think if you quit the game, you return to where you left off as well. It just doesn't let you reload a previous save
I try not to use quicksaves as much as possible as it turns everything into trial and error

True actually. So maybe I am being a little dumb there, but I think the general point was that he shouldn’t be forced to repeat an entire chunk of game if he dies, but that’s exactly what you do in Dark Souls, so I don’t get how it can be both.

Games that let you put points into skills like Strength and Agility, yet don't bother properly explaining what these actually do for you in real gameplay terms. Stop with the cryptic shit. I don't see it serving any purpose besides pointless obfuscation. I'm sure this has been mentioned, but damage on contact (as opposed to an attack) with an enemy. Hollow Knight is the most recent offender that I've played and it really fucks the game up for me This is one that annoys me too. Some games can make it work, but it made AfterImage a chore for me. Doubly so because the game has Soulslike mechanics, so if you die you're back to the last checkpoint and have to run past every enemy to pick up your XP again with no dodge in sight. Hardly fun.

Games that are all, like, "So, we noticed you've died a few times during this section - would you like to lower the difficulty, YOU PATHETIC N00B-LIKE CASUAL?"
Especially when they ask *again* a short while later, while you're still playing the same damn part, and especially x two + infinity when the 'Change difficulty: Y/N' menu defaults to 'Yes' in these moments.

Not sure if I mentioned that before, but prompt defaults are a pretty significant bugbear of mine; especially in Elden Ring, when you want, hmm scratch that, when you need to revive Torment and the game is asking "do you want to spend a flask?" but defaults to "NO". FFS, I just called for that mount, why not default to "Yes"...

It just doesn't let you reload a previous save I try not to use quicksaves as much as possible as it turns everything into trial and error One thing that comes to mind in this regard is that it doesn't seem to consider that you might not know much about the game you are playing. You also don't know how long a mission will be, how many autosaves or checkpoints there are. Perhaps the game is built on the player at least partially relying on quicksaves.
Let's say you are not replaying a game, you don't know much about it and the difficulty is high. Won't you get Trial-and-Error in any case? And be punished all the more for it on top of it.
Obviously Quicksave shouldn't be abused if it can be avoided. Go with the flow if possible. Dishonored is the best proof for that. But there are a lot of games that don't function like that and don't give you the same amount of tools, complex environments etc.
Wasting time is in and of itself not of value.

Getting stuck in the environment. Dunno why games keep including it, it's a shit feature Kinda related. Bits of environment that you look like you should be able to get to/through/over/under but can't because there's an invisible wall. Even worse when it's a platforming section so the invisible wall means that instead of landing on that ledge you're now sliding down a wall to your doom.

Pointless walk-around sections in games. I was playing Spider-Man MM with my boy recently. He wanted to swing around the city, jump off buildings and zap folk with spiderwebs. Instead we got to walk around an apartment fetching the shopping and choosing a record to play.
His confusion and disappointment was real. Doubled when we realised it couldn’t be skipped.

I quite like those, but then I'm not an impatient kid.
It does annoy me when every Nintendo game seems to make you click through 5 minutes of dialogue boxes before you can actually play anything though.
The game I'm playing right now had a walk around section at the start, but it was pretty short and I quite liked it (Alice: Madness Returns). Of course, it was the real world bit before going to Wonderland, so it'd have been a bit weird if they let you slice and dice people with a Vorpal Blade and shoot them with a giant Pepper Grinder! And it was only very short.

Not being told when you can skip an animation/cutscene. I've just found out, after 20 hours in, I could've skipped the chest opening animation in Vampire Survivors.
Arse!

Smash those buttons all the time, it's how you find out if you can skip stuff.

I think I'm used to the skip on the phone by just tapping again, so couldn't remember if it was an unlock!!
Yes I'm a dirty double dipper!

They only added that this year IIRC, you had to sit through the chest animation previously. Think you still do for the 5 item chests.
I had an unskippable cutscene after a failed test your might sequence in MK1 last night. Failed it twice and got so fed up with the lengthy delay before you can restart that I just quit to the main menu and enabled the option to skip test your might sections. I probably would've got it on the third go, but it was just so bloody frustrating. All games should have an immediately available retry option if you fail something like that.

Sports games adding in cutscenes for shite like contract negotiations or even just training games.
I'm playing that game specifically to play the sport it represents. I want everything that isn't playing the game to be as quick as possible with responsive menus.
