Another workaround - Bloober suggested this - is loading a save prior to arriving in the labyrinth. Mine is too far back - I'd need to do the whole prison again. No chance, I'm not ready for that again at this point. I actually do have a save just before the final puzzle in the Prison section, but as I only actually progressed into the Labyrinth after the patch had been applied and still hit the bug, I'm sceptical that will make any difference. Will keep it as a last resort though, in case they run into difficulties getting a viable hot fix out for later save files, etc.

Yeah, I'm a bit sceptical about it too. If you do in the end use the earlier save, and it works, let us know. If there's no patch by the weekend I may go back to my early prison save...but only if I know it will actually solve the issue.

Bloober's response
Information on the Labyrinth level blocker issue encountered from the 1.04 patch We are aware of an issue some players may encounter after the most recent 1.04 patch released on October the 21st in the Labyrinth level of Silent Hill 2. This blocker can occur if you load a save data from the Labyrinth level (after Toluca Prison) created before applying the 1.04 patch.
Our team has identified the issue, and a fix is in implementation. The fix will be released as soon as possible.
Currently, we would like to propose a temporary workaround which is using an earlier save, before entering the Labyrinth.
We deeply apologize for this inconvenience. We would like to sincerely thank all players for their patience.I mean, it's not some players, it's everyone who has a digital copy and who hasn't got past the labyrinth, though right now it's only a major irritant for those of us who are at the precise soft locked puzzle. You can do it, Bloober - the trick is simply to fix it without breaking anything else. Godspeed!

I especially waited for Jedi Survivor to be fixed on console and it's still quite janky. But anyway don't want to derail the chat, looking forward to grabbing this most likely for Xmas hols when it should be all done and dusted. Love a good stack of Xmas games to get through while overindulging. In terms of stuttering when moving around, like Jedi, I wouldn't expect it to ever be fixed. It's just part of Unreal's core. Was always the case even with UE4, but it wasn't as noticeable and was more easy to work around when environments were less detailed. You can optimise it to an extent, but at a certain point it becomes "make your environments have less detail", unless you've got the engineering bandwidth to go into the rendering code itself and fix it manually. It's broadly because Unreal aims for maximum compatability and ease of use across industries with its systems and workflows, but it lends itself to poor performance out of the box as a result if you use it the way they claim you can. There's some good talks from GDC/UnrealFest in recent years from studios like CDPR about the amount of background overhauling you need to do to make Unreal really behave itself these days. It's an engine stuck in transition really atm.

I'm looking more for a better lock to 60. The "stutter struggle" is inherent I know and as you say I don't believe will ever get fixed. The fact it will be the goto engine this gen will probably make it worse.

Yeah the raw framerate should be better relative to what it's pushing detail wise that's for sure. 60 was fine for me but I have a pretty new/souped up GPU, I ended up using lossless scaling to frame gen it up to 120.

I've been playing on 60, with the 90s filter and I can barely notice any issues. I think really people fixate on these things, when you start playing, it all goes away.

Oh I'll be playing on ps5. I'm not planning on getting a Pro to brute force it which seems to be the conversation now.

There are some games that I've played that when it's lurched hard, I've definitely noticed it and it's actively marred my enjoyment of the game. Like if you were playing a fighting game and it dropped from a locked 60 you would definitely notice it, same a for FPS as it effects response time in everything you do. Resolution I couldn't give a shit about but if you're offering a performance mode then you need to pull your finger out and offer what you're advertising. Not everyone has a VRR tv and it feels that's being used a crutch sometimes.

I feel like there should be 2 performance modes really.
I have a VRR tv and thought the performance was great 99% of the time, buttery smooth with very rare drops. Perfect for VRR tv owners.
There needs to be a locked performance mode though which drops a few more settings to achieve the lock to 60fps for those that don't have VRR tv's.

Bizarrely, I've put this on the 30 mode, probably the first time this gen I've done it. Possibly because it's quite a dark game and generally slow paced that it hasn't bothered me at all.

Yeah I’m on 30 as well. I enjoyed it for AW2 so thought I would try for this and I’m really comfortable with it. Whilst I do enjoy 60 for certain games, for this type of game I’m quite happy with 30.

And done.
That was just absolutely fucking terrifying depressing excellent all round. What an amazing update to an amazing game. I’m very depressed happy indeed. Can’t fault it at all. It’s completely surpassed my expectations.
I’m off to do something more cheerful. Which is anything else.
Damn. That was great though. Apparently I was 23 hours and 22 mins. Longer than I thought it would be.

Yup. Plus checking every damn corner for those leggy bastards. Some of them still managed to get the drop on me. I naturally got the In Water ending. Because I always seem to get that one.

Yep I got that ending too. I read up on how you get the endings but there doesn't seem to be anything that conclusive of what you should do. One guide I actually did nearly everything opposite of what they said to get the ending. I don't care for happy endings in horror games, so it was all good with me.

Ending (very vague but I'll spoiler it anyway) The thing is I actually think it's the most apt ending for the narrative, given everything that's happened, and what James has done. Thinking about it, I suppose it can be argued that it isn't a good message, particularly in this day and age and moreso with the increased focus (rightly so) on mental health. Yet as I'm half viewing this game in a time capsule and I am aware of - and have experienced - this ending before, it doesn't bother me so much. I do wonder how appropriate it is these days however and I'm half inclined to think that it should have been left out, or handled differently. It's like Konami were aware of this, which affected their ending to The Short Message.

I vaguely remember what I'm about to experience, as I went into a tunnel and there's some huge leggy bastard. For my own pleasure I thought I'd see if I could shoot him and after about 12 shotgun blasts, he fell

Pretty sure it’s the remake they are referencing there?
Edit: read it again and I think you’re right. It’s not very clear though.

Well, that was genuinely depressing. Seems like an absolutely bizarre game to have come out of the PS2 era. Even by today's videogame story standards it seems, subject-wise, unique and bold. A horror masterpiece undoubtedly, not surprised it's considered the best in the genre (objectively I'd agree, even if I'm in no rush whatsoever to replay it), but the remake was about 4 hours too long for me and it lost something (gameplay-wise) by the end. I imagine the original's ending pacing was better. Everything post-abstract daddy, which was an incredible boss, up until the final hotel part where the narrative kicked back in felt padded. Didn't enjoy the dual pyramid head boss either and I was rushing through and not finding it scary for those final four or five hours. The ending was excellent, though. Got the Leave ending, which having read the others feels tonaly wrong (water sounds more fitting) but more satisfying. I'd definitely go for dog if I ever replayed it. BUT my god... The first fifteen or so hours, the story and the way it unravelled, the level design, the atmosphere, the surrealness, the characters, the world, the oppressiveness, the genuine horror of it all... stunning. Played with headphones I found the sound design constantly unnerving and genuinely scary at times. It's without any doubt the best sound design in any game I've ever played. Won't forget it, or play it again, in a hurry.

SkillUp's review was pretty good, I thought:
Yeah, I thought that was a fair and generally very positive review. Interestingly, and not to be contrarian, the three aspects he highlights as minor criticisms were all pretty much non-issues for me, personally. I thought Brookhaven in particular, which he uses as his main exemplar of (admittedly minor but) unnecessary expansion/artificial length, was actually pitched perfectly. I really, really enjoyed the whole area; felt it -- much like Woodside -- had a real sense of space/place, etc. Toluca Prison then just dials it up to 11. Similarly, in terms of combat, the more modern approach to range/melee didn't feel out of place at all, to my mind. It still retained a certain element of clunkiness (whether 100% intentional by design is up for debate lol), and the melee especially I thought was visceral and satisfying. Small thing: I think the obvious design/UI choice NOT to have a weapons wheel/quick select visually represented on the screen really spoke to the care and mindfulness of their approach when it came to preserving the overall "feel" of the original. But the ability to still switch between weapons and then melee (without having to go into the menus and manually equipping them) made everything flow so much better -- and, again in my view, really elevated the combat above the original, but not to the silly levels of other more modern games in the genre, etc. Also didn't have any issue with the dodge mechanic. 18 hours in and it hadn't even occurred to me that any i-frames were present lol. I'm currently stuck at the Labyrinth progress bug until they release the hotfix (apparently later today), and, as I say, about 18 hours in. At the moment, I certainly don't feel any sense of fatigue or being ready for it all just to be over, which he mentioned he was experiencing by the time he got to the Hotel. Guess I'll see how I feel then, but given I'm pretty well aware of what's coming, I don't foresee that being a personal issue for me either. It's just really, really fucking good, man.

It's one of these things isn't it. It depends how much you're caning something. It took me two and a half weeks to finish it and I didn't get fatigue at any point. I'm not going to pretend I don't have any gripes with it - no game is perfect after all - however a lot of my gripes come from similar gripes I have with the original one (I think the hospital, apartments and labyrinth go on too long - even before they've been extended here - and as such I still think they go on a bit long). Not enough to tire me out, just a personal preference. I just love the bits pissing about a fog filled town more than anything else. I've been watching some YT vids since I finished, going over small bits of detail I've missed. There's so much in here. Apparently that IS Mary's body in the back seat of his car. One of the original game designers went on record a few years back and said that same thing. James essentially killed her a couple of days before arriving at the viewpoint at the start of the game. When James mentions Mary dying three years ago, that can be taken as that's when the disease took hold, and as such, that's when she effectively became dead to him. His wedding band has only been removed recently, and his hands shaking in the bathroom at the start indicates that he has recently killed her. I noticed during the In Water ending that when he is speaking, he looks behind him at the back seat once or twice, as though talking to her, because she is lying there. Also, the letter she writes him ceases to exist by the time you get to the end of the game, indicating he imagined it.
Just in case the game wasn't depressing enough.

Loads of other wee details as well, like how - in the case of Eddie - his breath always makes clouds, as though he's cold. Because HIS version of Silent Hill is always freezing, as indicated by the boss fight arena for him. That's also his van parked at the viewpoint, as indicated by the drink cup in the dash being the same as one you find near him later on. Oh yeah, back to James: All the bodies you see in the game, including the one sitting under the blanket facing the TV... They're all James. In fact, my own interpretation of the TV body in the apartments is that this version of James shot himself after watching the same tape you find in the Lakeview Hotel, although who puts the blanket over him I don't know... Another version of James perhaps, an earlier one. Of course, his body being under that blanket is also a reminder of the fact that Mary's body is under a blanket in his car. The whole thing is probably one big fucking time loop. It's fucked up man. I guess that's why I like it.

None of this will be new information to everyone I'm sure, but I guess I've never bothered looking too deeply into the original game.

In fact the James you play as, is probably the only one who has made it to the "end" and confronted "Mary". All the others died beforehand. There's loads near where you fight Eddie and I wonder how many times that particular fight has taken place, with Eddie always winning until now.
