I quite enjoyed the pacing and story exposition in that bit, it was a nice break and the area was lovely.
YMMV.

I liked that part a good deal, although I'll admit that the yak lacked a certain oomph as a means of conveyance. Even Atreus commented upon how damn slow it was!

There's a lot of sections like that.
I'm still not feeling it. Think I'm 12 hours. At about 4 hours I decided to only do the main quests and there does seem to be loads of optional side stuff. I'm still enjoying the actual story though and where it seems to be going.

I’m 24 hours in, enjoying the story and general gameplay.
Like bichii I’ve mostly stopped doing side quests and collectables for that now, seems like there is still loads to do, and I can end up burning out being ocd about getting it all done before moving on with the main quest.
I’ll come back and do the favours as up to now they have all been really good.
Also I can travel now to the fire area but only have one half of the seed for it, so not sure how that happened.

The more I play, the more a sense of familiarity kicks in; however, that isn't stopping me from having an absolute blast.
By contrast, when that exact same sense of déjà vu kicked in while playing Horizon earlier in the year, it had a major adverse impact upon my enjoyment of said game.
Why this should be the case, I've no idea.

It helps that the underlying game play mechanics and combat in GoW are enjoyable, whereas Horizon's is shit.

While I wouldn't go that far, I do agree that GoW is superior to HZD, so its sequel had a head start from the get-go.

I would go that far.
Horizon's combat was all about enemies transversing impossible distances in a blink of an eye, knocking you down, taking an age to get back up again and a camera that made sure you had no idea wtf was going on the whole time.
Normally with big budget high profile releases like that I would at worst whack it down to easy to see it through to the end and get to see all the story and shinies. CBA with even that.

Well, yeah - I figured as much
I actually enjoyed the ranged combat in the Horizon games, although the melee combat sucked ass in both; my main gripe was their open-world genericness, which of course God of War lacks.

More importantly games like this shouldn't be so long. After 12 hours it feels long and some of you are at the 24 hours mark..:/.

Apparently it’s ‘over 20 hours’ if you just focus on main quest and don’t dither around smelling roses. My time is inflated by afk pausing, side stuff and obsessing over collectibles. I’ve just finished the section where Atreus runs off to Asgard .

Not started this yet, but IMO Horizon is more fun to play than GoW 2018 once you get a handle on the combat. I didn't like it at first, before I leveled up and understood how effective traps, trip wire and the elemental arrows were. But GoW definitely has stronger writing, which can definitely make progression more interesting and worthwhile.

FWIW, those struggling with the combat, this time around status effects are way more important than they were in GOW2018, charging up the axe/blades and using runic arrows and spells are way more powerful than any combos. Freeze/burn, then switch to the other weapon and heavy hit does a ton more damage and stun than just wailing on them. Stun also seems to be more important all round especially as Atreus so when you start unlocking the buffs on the skills, don’t bother with the minor damage boosts and go for the major stun/status boosts.

I've played about 16 hours and have done quite a lot of side quests and puzzles. Some of the puzzles have definitely been head scratchers and I dawdle about a bit and afk quite a bit.
This is looking like a 40 hour game for me considering I have only just received my first heavy runic attack.

It said lots less very recently and I played about an hour last night, so no idea how accurate that actually is. I do tend to meander about looking for chests, though. And I'm currently afk.

I’ll put this behind spoilers in case you don’t want to know, but if you did want to know your progress Atreus running away is about the halfway mark

Yaks for courses I guess but I’m finding that section tedious as fuck. I get it’s important for the story but it’s not what I want from this game! The boss was very good though.

Wizzard_OokI was the same way, mate - I'm usually something of a clean freak, but I'd obviously slacked off in that regard, as my room was *very* dusty when I started up Ragnarok!

Narrative in games is immature in general but fwiw the death of a dog is generally considered a cheap and lazy emotional shortcut in story telling and here I didn’t think it really earned it the right to do it. Later game spoilers: and making it moot was kind of weird as well, I like the story overall but that part was cheap and nasty and felt very manipulative
