I'm enjoying it, it's good, but the pacing is letting it down. The plot is this race against time with monumental consequences, but the game wants to slow it down and interrupt your progress at every turn. It's a bit weird and I'm suprised tbh. It's just not at the same level as some other big hitters.

So spent a good hour this morning getting totally pissed off with two different puzzles (one underground and one over ground, like the feckin Wombles) I might not be the sharpest tool in the box but getting held up continually by not understanding I need to freeze this body of water and not that one ect is really harming my experience. I will spoiler the next bit but if someone who has finished can look, can they let me know approx how far in I am...So I just got the Spear from the Little Mermaid I read that revan has completed at around 19 hours ? I have probably done 3 side quests, 3 or 4 of the Rune creates but otherwise story all they way albeit stuck a few times and I'm on 18 odd hours and feel like I'm miles off completing. I think it is fair to say I am only just enjoying enough to continue, it is a 6/10 for me at present. I should have known as with the first game I quit around half way in. Completed all the original ps2 games though.

I'm enjoying the story and puzzle bits just as much as the flashy lights and punching bits. Haven't had a problem with the pacing at all. And 20 hours probably only feels long if you play it all in 2 days. I much prefer taking my time with stuff like this.

I had it polished in a few days and I thought the pacing was fine. If it was all combat all the time I’d honestly have gotten fatigued and ditched it, but the exposition scenes and character switches kept me engaged.

Not asking for all combat though, just... more of it. So many main mission stretches involve a puzzle, a chat, a climb (and FFS why can't kratos climb faster), a puzzle, then a 60 second combat encounter against 3 enemies, a puzzle...

It's just a bit jack-of-all-trades and doesn't excel in any single one field - pretty much like the 2018 game. No idea why both of them have had such stellar reviews.
Except maybe the story/characters - never thought I'd say that about a God of War game!

I think I'd enjoy it a lot more without all the endless chat, slow walking, slow climbing, squeezing, repetitive annoying puzzles, moralising about how hard it is being a god, millennial wise crackery (although there have been some genuine lolz. The best thing about the game is the combat, which they seem to have restricted, and the graphics, like the original Jaffe games. BUT I'm still enjoying it, about the same as GOW 2018.

I don't know what level the people wanting more combat are playing it on, but would turning it up help to increase or intensify the combat?
As for the combat, I know I'm a filthy casual who doesn't even play Souls games, but this (and the 2018 game) is probably my favourite version of third person melee based combat. It seems quite a decent mix between sensible button timing and sheer chaos.
There's always the training arena in Niflheim or the combat challenges in Musphelheim if you want endless waves of enemies.

The combat is good, arcadey fun, I enjoy it. I don't enjoy the walking around chatting, or the crap puzzles (sorry but the hex ones are really annoying and clunky). I think a lot of that stuff could have been cut out. I just think it's weird to make this really good, fun combat system and use it relatively sparingly. But the other problem is that so far there just dont seem to be that many epic encounters. I'm sounding like I hate it but I'm enjoying it, it's just interesting as I feel there is something lacking and I'm trying to articulate what it is. I just want the story to move forward with more purpose.

Having completed it I can say there are very few epic moments. I might be wrong but I felt the 2018 game had way more wow epic moments. There is one bit where kratos is carrying someone to safety and there's a few q.t. prompts and full on epicness happening all around you but that's one of the only moments in twenty hours.

I don't think the difficulty setting matters, doing a puzzle, a climb, a talk, a squeeze, then fighting 3 enemies and repeating is going to suck on any difficulty level.
And as harrypalmer says, even then - where's all the cool, epic shit? The game is fine, but it's just so lacking in wow factor. It's like a rollercoaster that consists only of a giant, protracted mild downhill slope.

Kratos is middle aged now. Slowly hiking about with his mouthy teenaged son is epic enough.

Yeah I was playing the other day and after kratos grunted his way climbing up something, I half expected Atreus to take the piss

As for the length/pacing, I think it suits me as I like to have intense bits and then some exploration, then puzzles in a nice variety and this seems just right for me. It's about my "speed", so to speak

Is all this multicoloured blood normal after a fight? Not sure if it's just the level I'm on. Looks like there's some kind of weird filter on but everything is set to default.

I don't know what level the people wanting more combat are playing it on, but would turning it up help to increase or intensify the combat?. Yes and no. All it really does is make everyone take more damage and hit a lot harder, so there is far, far less room for error, so encounters are very tense/intense. Im playing on a harder level and it is kind of annoying as you do tend to get swarmed from all angles and hardly any of your attacks have hitstun, so enemies not only blow through attack strings but will hit you from behind while youre doing them. It kind of forces you to play conservatively rather than awesomely, you dont really feel like the god of war when some random trash mob skellington takes half your life in one hit. Im perservering because Im quite bloody minded but it definitely sucking some fun out of it. It also doesnt help that a lot of the good crowd control stuff from the old one has either been removed or gated behind the ridiculously stingy gear/skill tree. Ive been playing for hours and havent even found a hard runic attack yet.

I think I was around 15 hours played before I found my first one, as for combat I am on easy and have struggled on a couple of Boss fights! I am shite at button combo's mind you, so usually just spam light or heavy attacks.

About 7 hours in and finding combat not too bad on normal difficulty so far, apart from getting my cheeks absolutely clapped the first time I wandered near a draugr hole. Dropped 2018 down to easy on my recent playthrough to get through the first few hours quickly (third attempt at playing it), but then never raised it back up again which I probably should've done in hindsight.

Had a great 90 minutes this morning, didn't get stuck on puzzles as they were very easy ones, culminated in a great fight with Garm although sad we could not tame him Onward and upward. Going to try and get a good few hours in over the weekend.
