While we’re all entranced by Musk losing a bomb on Twitter, I just read that Avatar 2 has to make 3 billion to break even.
Does anyone remotely care about this movie? I enjoyed the technology of the first movie but thought it was terrible garbage, and this is just looking like… (preview voice) “somehow they’re back, doing more of the same. instead of a giant tree, it’s a giant coral with unobtainabum under it. instead of taming a big dragon thing it’s a big fish dragon thing. All the dead humans are now Avatars. That guy you were glad was dead? He’s an Avatar now. Sigourney Weaver? Avatar. The girl from Titanic? AVATAR. epic genius James Cameron has even made AVATARS of actors who are literally dead. Bill Paxton. He’s an AVATAR. Robin Williams. AVATAR. Carrie Fisher? You guessed it. AVATAR. money money money bitches come watch it.”

I'm looking forward to a proper blockbuster that isn't a superhero film. I enjoyed the first and never understood how much hate it gets.

I think he said 2 billion, but still that's a crazy budget. Must be nearly a billion if he's saying 2 billion.
Only spiderman far from home has come close since the pandemic.

Speaking of Avatar, I went to this place in Thailand that is like a toilet theme park. So you've got a really big toilet you can climb into, cave toilets, a Tarzan toilet in a treehouse, a magical land of toilets! And they had an Avatar toilet! You walked up a rope bridge to the top of a tree, and there's a little placard explaining the concept of the Avatar sky toilet. I didn't use it though, it was pretty smelly. Edit: And no, I'm not making this up. aroundtravels.com/new_articles/park-amazing-amazing-toilets-toilets-thailand-suan-nai-dum.html

I'm not sure anyone really hates it, they just recognise it for what it is: a whole load of nothing.

It really is one of the most forgettable blockbusters I've ever seen.
I even thought the 3D was poor, especially compared to something like Gravity.

It was fine for testing out my 3D plasma tv. All I remember was they had sex by touching tails together.

I really enjoyed the first one for the spectacle and action. In a world of forgettable, derivative shite, it's nowhere near the most forgettable, derivative shite.
Having said that, unless someone motivates me to go see this I won't be motivating anyone else.

I wouldn't say the 3D in it was poor, but I didn't see anything particularly better about it than any other 3D film. Or to put it another way it didn't add anything more to the experience than the 3D in any other 3D film.
Gravity is one of the exceptions to that as it is basically a theme park ride of a film and 3D lends itself well to that. I would also say Hugo worked, because it was trying to capture the magic of those early films for the contemporary viewers, as well as using it to heighten the artificial look, rather than pretending it in anyway looked life-like.
Outside of the 3D, Avatar was just nothing. I honestly can barely remember anything about it, beyond blue aliens and evil humans burning down their tree. I'm sure I will see the new one, just because I'm sure everyone will be talking about it, but can't say it is something I'm either anticipating or dreading. It will likely be fine and an acceptable way to spend 2-3 hours.
I just hope it doesn't kickstart another wave of 3D films.

I'm looking forward to a proper blockbuster that isn't a superhero film. I enjoyed the first and never understood how much hate it gets. I think its main fault is that it’s the most successful movie of all time, which calls anything that’s wrong with it into sharp relief. It’s desperately tepid and unoriginal writing from a guy who gave us five stunningly good films previously. It’s not even remarkably bad, which at least makes True Lies kind of interesting. It’s just tepid. There’s also the James Cameron Comes Off As A Giant Cunt factor to consider, although that’s been lessened somewhat in the post Trump / Musk / various other political cunts era giving us perspective.

Over here they re-released Avatar 1 about a month ago. Which seemed like a good idea as a way to hype it up for everyone whose forgotten about it, and maybe introduce it to a whole new generation. But it only seemed to run for a week or two, which doesn't imply that it was especially popular. I vaguely considered taking the kids to see #1, so they'd know what was going on if went to watch #2. But they declared the trailer for #2 to be very boring and showed no interest in going. So we watched the LotR imax re-release instead

I like Avatar well enough, although I remain baffled as to how it made QUITE so much money (Titanic, highest-grossing film at that point, was still at least half-a-bil above every other film ever, so if Avatar had made, like, $1.5bn or something fair enough; but $2.8bn or whatever it was? Bonkers).
I think Cam's $2bn figure is because they've spent about a billion dollars on films 2 and 3 altogether, with some of that money also serving as development for the presumed 4 and 5. But those last two only happen if the first two are a success. So I can see how it all adds up.
Frankly it's barmy that Fox rolled the dice on this in such a big way, although I can see Disney risking that kind of cash as they'll be thinking of Fortnite skins and theme parks and onesies.

At this point any studio would be willing to gamble on Cameron, he keeps winning despite the prophecies of doom each time.
That said I can't see it doing *quite* as well as the first one. But it'll probably do quite well.

People talking on Twitter is often a poor barometer of actual quality (I seem to remember people raving about Batman v Superman) but so far Avatar Episode II: Attack of the Cats is getting very good word of mouth.
Bet this goes gangbusters. Totally silly. Three billion dollars.

Yeah I can see it doing well, but not well enough. Seems like a complete act of hubris on Cameron's part. I can't believe he's still pushing 3D, it's totally shit.

Seems pretty accurate really. It’s the same argument that gets trotted out here over and over.
I guess if the next movie flops we’ll know.

Consider how quotable his Terminator and Aliens films are, how memorable The Abyss or Titanic. Avatar’s claim to fame is that it made people want to kill themselves because humans are so ugly. And because shit movies are so successful sometimes.

It's ridiculous, the first one came out over 10 years ago. That's a longer gap than both Terminator 2 and Aliens. I like Cameron but they idea of waiting this long and expecting people to be hyped is mad, especially when he's saying there's going to be 3 more films after this one - we'll all be dead!

I've got my 3D ticket booked but expect to enjoy it as much as the original, which is not at all but the 3D visuals will be good.
I've not liked a Cameron movie since True Lies and I say that as someone who has Aliens as his favourite film.

True Lies is great, his output since then not so much. However as that's currently only two movies (until next week) that's not saying a lot. In an alternate universe Cameron didn't make Avatar but a fuckton of other great films instead, I'd prefer to be in that one.

TBH I never realized True Lies was a Cameron joint. I always just assumed it was a Tony Scott film. I liked that movie when I was young but I haven’t seen it in ages. My nostalgic memories are that it was good though.
