I was talking about it with my kids and I realised that if they aren't familiar with all the stuff it rips off (pocahontas/ferngully/etc..., Aliens, etc..) then they're probably going to enjoy the storyline a lot more then we did.
On the other hand, Aliens is the much better OTT marines, Sigourney and sick-arsed gunship movie... so maybe they should just wait til they're old enough for that.

If Avatar seems like it sucks because it is derivative of Aliens, might poisoning your kids with Avatar first risk making Aliens seem bad later?

Could ask them if they want to see it?...
They probably want to see it.

Avatar or Aliens?
They said the Avatar Wet Cats trailer was really boring, and they're too young for Aliens.

Never too young for Aliens. I watched it at 4 years old and turned out pretty well adjusted.
Far more scarred by Watership down, Animals of Farthing Wood and that creepy wizard of Oz sequel.

IME kids just laugh at 80s stuff or earlier now, and criticise 'the graphics'.

One good thing about the practical stuff in the eighties it still looks pretty good while early CGI looks awful. Aliens uses the dark a hell of a lot to hide things and it works very well but it's a legal requirement to mention John Carpenter's The Thing for pretty much perfect practical effects that still look so fucking good now.

Before I get accused of being anti avatar, I do have fond memories of it from my cinema days. I was just hoping Cameron would make more of an effort with storytelling this time, it would appear not.

Tbf it is Peter Bradshaw, regardless of this particular review I don't find him to be a particularily good critic, most of the time as with other film reviews in the Guardian it just feels like they're trying to reach the word count.

I really won’t feel disappointed if this turns out to be exactly what it always appeared to be; a middling movie that will “flop” by virtue of being so expensive in the first place, as an expression of a once-innovative moviemaker since ruined by success, hubris, and far too much money.

This is completely anecdotal, but to me it doesn't feel like there's much hype or anything about this. The first one was this huge event, but so far nobody I know has even mentioned wanting to go see it.
Anyway, I wish it all the best. I don't know that it's going to get $2bn worth of success, but it's still probably going to be the biggest movie of the year.

I don't know. I would be surprised if it manages to do Top Gun Maverick type money. I'm sure it will do well, seemingly being pretty much the only big film out over the Christmas period, but I fully expect it to be considered as underperforming.

No matter what it does, it’ll always be in the shadow of the most money movie of all time, and I can’t see it doing anywhere near that or even the top ten. But who knows. It’s hard to bet against James Cameron, I remember when Titanic was a disastrous flop in the making until it was the biggest movie of all time, just before his next movie was the biggest movie of all time.

I guess $2bn isn't even that significant these days. Endgame made almost $3bn.

Wasn't the first one like the 'beginning' of real cinema 3D hype, the real next gen bs. Turns out 3D is a bit shit and nobody is that interested, but he's still trying to push it.

3D, when done well, is excellent. It's not really Cameron's fault that he made a decent experience and then Hollywood decided to push it onto everything with generally mediocre results. I'm excited to see this in #D, the 5 min clip at the end of the Avatar's recent theatrical run looked amazing.
I read/watched 4 reviews yesterday and all of them were positive about it.

I don't know that I really trust the reviews on this. They were overwhelmingly positive on the first movie too, and I... well, I didn't hate it or anything, but it didn't really leave me clamoring for a sequel either.
So I probably won't bother. It's cool if other people are more into it than me, but this isn't really on my list of must-sees.

Yeah, the Empire review is 5 stars, I mean it's Empire and they really overrate the geek stuff. I mean does anyone remember their Attack of the Clones review?

Chris Hewitt certainly does remember the AotC review, he's recanted on that many, many times on the podcast. Not read the Empire review of this but did check it wasn't James Dyer that was doing it, he's a huge Avatar fan, he didn't.
I love the magazine and the podcast but sometimes they can get things a bit wrong, 3 stars for Dredd?! Subsequently admitted on the pod that it's too low.

Youd hope the second one would rip off a different movie. Like Free Willy meets Waterworld or something.

Empire are very big on cinematic spectacle so they tend to highly rate stuff that looks really cool if you see it on a huge IMAX screen. I feel like the Avatar 2 review reads just like the original Avatar review, in that it's a well-constructed action movie with a hippy message but if you're into visual splendour it's a feast for the eyes and ears. And to be fair I remember thinking the same thing in 2009 or whever: that it was a four-star film that turned into a five-star experience in IMAX 3D.
So the span of reviews for the new one are panning out more-or-less as I thought; that it's exactly the same, quality-wise, as the first film, and the "graphics" (my kids use that expression too) will wow you just as much as the first film did.
"If you liked Avatar here's more Avatar". I still have this funny feeling it's gonna do billions but time will tell.

I think Cameron has said $2bn, but that's not the budget of this one film, it's because they've made two back-to-back and spent loads on R&D and new technology, and even (I believe) some development and early footage for the mooted Avatar 4 & 5.
So I reckon all of that - two films plus everything else - could be $1bn, and then with marketing and everything and needing it to be profitable, he's saying $2bn.
Either that or he just wants to try to make a ton of cash.

I was today years old when I learned that this movie is actually in 3D again.
Does that make it a retro movie?
