I hear Avatar 5 is tracking for $10bn and a 200% fresh rating on RT.

I’m quite happy to wait and watch it in 40 minute lumps at no extra charge on Disney Plus.

Just got back from this, my first 3D film. It makes your eyes tire doesn't it?
Anyway I'm going to go contrary to the guarded cynicism and say it's the best blockbuster since LOTR IMO. Thoroughly enjoyed it, it had the nature stuff, the tribal stuff, the Cameron mil-porn stuff, and it had some genuine emotional beats too.
The best looking film I've ever seen for special effects and yes Cameron's action sequences are superb, you can actually tell what is happening.
I will say Kate Winslet was poor in it. There was one line of hers that rivalled the lake on Naboo howler. The one about 'many breeding seasons'. She delivered it as well as anybody could be expected, waste of talent there.
Sigourney was brilliant as per.
Sam Worthington has upped his game I think.

Not long back from seeing it on a Laser IMAX screen with my nine year old daughter.
Best fucking movie experience I’ve ever had in a cinema. Easy call. Neither of us lost interest for a moment during the whole runtime. The spectacle, the immersion, the feeling of looking through a portal into another world, was without compare. The story, the centering in family, the way the script got so, so many of the little moments, glances, sighs and general interactions of parents and kids, siblings among each other and kids with friends and enemies, these are the human elements that connect with the bulk of the audience who aren’t looking for something to be sour about, or pissed because you know what Hudson just ain’t coming back to the screen ergo Cameron is passed it
The action sequences in this film are, in my opinion, the most well structured and shot, muscle clenchingly intense and just fucking awesome yet put to film. An alien planet, blue people, flying in and out of the water, giant boats zooming all over, whales, things blowing up, arrows, bullets, more whales, things turning upside down, all of that shit and more and not once was in the least bit confused as to what was going on. In a world where two cunts punching each other in a single room is typically hard to follow…
Cameron is at the top of his game. Talking with my kid, both of us giddy, on ride home, I was telling her how he’s been my favorite director and made many of my most favorite films since I first saw Aliens on VHS while visiting my brother in the states. I was maybe three years older than her. She said he’s her favorite director, (helps her first Cameron movie was also Aliens, couple years ago)
He gets the family, the generational thing.
I know we were spoiled seeing it at the very best possible screen experience you can get for this film. The. HFR stuff was truly mind boggling. The stuff on the screen during the climactic battle was truly like I was right there inside the scene.
Anyway, obviously I could keep going on. Can’t honestly find damn thing wrong with it that isn’t negated by going along with what this movie was trying to achieve. Many of the points of criticism I’ve seen are akin to saying motor racing is shit because no one scores any goals.
10/10 easy

Also, the viewing was packed and looking around the audience it was a wide swathe of demographics. Lots of folks on the older side. We sat beside a group of four ladies all at least in their sixties.
Folks earlier saying no one was interested, who cares, no way it’s going to make much of a splash.
Fuck’s sake. It’s pushing 1.7 billion and it’s been out three fucking weeks so far. Wouldn’t be shocked if by time it’s done it’s initial run it’s beat out Avatar’s.

I’m honestly surprised, but 75 million people voted for Donald Trump.

Or it's a good movie experience?
Khani's not wrong, Cameron never films a confusing action sequence. You always know what's happening.

It doesn't really surprise me, his movies are pretty consistently popular. That doesn't change whether I'm going to see it (I probably won't). But hey, it's cool when people enjoy things.

Cameron did an interview or something this week and confirmed that it was days away from breaking even so he’s getting ready to spend the next 6 or 7 years working on the sequels. $2b wasn’t the number: it was less but still high.

I’m pretty sure the high number was to break even on all expenses incurred so far. As in, all the R&D for the technology and the cost of shooting 2,3 and some of 4
We will almost certainly never know, but I reckon the marketing budget for this one hasn’t been too extreme. Almost all of the mention of the movie I’ve seen gage either been quoting Cameron directly or pieces generated by journalists opining if the avatar phenomenon was still alive, whether it was going to flop and then just reheating articles from 13 years ago
Kind of like a reverse Streisand effect. Seems to have been a very efficient strategy, as it’s making money hand over fist. I think this film is going to keep playing for months as word of mouth and it once more being part of the zeitgeist really take effect

Do I need to have seen the first? I just can't see myself being able to do a solid 3 hours sat still for it in cinema.

You don't need to, there is a sort of recap at the start but it's pretty swift.

I saw this just after Christmas in the big Imax in Glasgow. Absolutely loved it in all honesty. As a cinema "experience" it was hard to beat. The film itself was far from flawless but it looked so amazing that I was captivated the entire time. Like the first, it's a one and done thing for me on the big 3D screen. There's nothing else quite like seeing these films and I would very much like another please Jim, so carry on.

As it’s only $20 million or so away from passing Infinity War’s global take, James Cameron will soon be the director behind three of the top five highest grossing movies of all time.

I assume he's getting the China money? It feels like that series would go down pretty well over there, when the bad guys are basically the American military.

Funnily enough China's had a massive drop off this week, maybe to do with new year perhaps. The big European and Asian countries like France, Germany and South Korea were bigger grosses than China this week.
The film is still number 1 at the box office in almost every country at the moment, it's just doing really well everywhere not just specific places.

I'm sure it is! But doing well in China is probably worth more than doing well in many other places combined, probably even moreso than when the first Avatar came out. More people in China innit.
Anyway, good to see it's doing well. I hope it will bring more people back to the cinemas.

This got me curious about the relative cost of a movie ticket in China, which appears to be about a third of what you’d pay in Australia. Currency converter said five pounds. That depends on whether the initial source was correct though.

Over the past few years, a lot of the top grossing movies in the world were Chinese movies that *only* released in China. It is a huge market.
That said, I kinda expected Avatar 2 to rely on the Chinese market, as the first one was pretty popular there and I thought it wouldn't be that popular in the west. But the Covid situation in China has cut their boxoffice quite a bit, and it seems to be doing well in the west, so I clearly know nothing.
Side note, I had assumed that Cameron was also responsible for some of the most expensive movies ever made, what with Titanic and Avatar, but it turns out the most expensive movie ever is Pirates of the Caribbean 4 (on stranger tides). Which is a bit WTF as nothing in that movie looks particularly special or expensive.

Didn’t Depp get something outrageous like 70 million upfront for that pile of shit?

The main expense was Depp’s sushi train of cocaine and caviar delivered on the backs of Moroccan boys sewn together arse to mouth. “Worst rider ever” they called it. Movie was bad too.

$2.2433 billion globally now, passing Titanic and becoming the 3rd highest grossing movie of all time. Avengers: Endgame sits at $2.7 billion, and Avatar at $2.92 billion.

Still gonna be people reckoning it’s all mince and 3 will flop, come next year
His films have made 4/5 as much as Spielberg’s total gross. Despite Spielberg having released close to four times as many movies.
But yeah, Cameron is a hack
