As the instigator of this particular thread, I don't mind if it were changed to just Dark Souls III. The majority of the posts have been about that game to be fair. I've no idea how to change the title though.

Midir is finally down after many evenings of attempts, including more deaths I care to say falling down that damned ladder in his run back.
Thankfully his second phase isn't completely different to his first, so once I had finally mastered the his phase one moveset, it wasn't going to be long before he fell.
Epic.

He's very much in the category of bosses I hated and thought was ridiculous. Then I committed to beating him and the more I learned his patterns the more I realised it was a great fight. Epic indeed!

After many attempts Slave Knight Gael has finally fallen and I stand victorious at last. As you all know he is really the pinnacle of boss design in all ways. What a fitting denouement to the whole Dark Souls 3 trilogy.
All three phases are dangerous and unpredictable at first, but never unfair once you learn what you need to do. Even the seemingly insurmountable third phase strangely became very doable once I had learnt the dance.
Before I tackle NG+ and later hopefully the platinum, I'll be taking a short break to play something shitter (which means any other game really), but what a ride.

I'm playing Dark Souls for the second time after giving up the first time 8 years earlier and I'm having a lot more joy this time round.
Or I was, until I decided to take a stroll down the Great Hollow. I was dead pleased with myself finding a secret entrance and making it all the way down to the bottom to Ash Lake on my first try, but decided to head back up when the Hydra kept kicking my arse.
Now the way back up is not like the way down was, I kept sliding off geometry and falling to my death, then on one trip up I managed to get cursed. I'm stuck with half health until I get to New Londo or find some stone item, if I manage to get out of this tree.
I haven't even rang the bell in Blight Town yet.

Experience says you don't go that way until later! But curiosity takes you there. It was actually genius in terms of coaxing people deeper and deeper early on and then leaving them with a horrible journey back.

Just before that I had conquered Catacombs then gave up on Tomb of Giant's when I couldn't see nowt, then headed to Blight Town and strolled around in human form and embarrassed a couple of invaders with my mad parrying skillz. So I felt like I had this Dark Souls lark figured out.

It's a horrible way back when you end up there inadvertently, the first time.
Take. It. Very. Very. Slowly.

I managed to get out!
I thought I'd take my cursed body to New Londo Ruins to hit some ghosts then I got to the part about ten of them ambush you at once, not so great to repeat when the Firelink shrine firekeeper has been mur-diddily-urdered.

I don't know how anyone managed to get through Blight Town playing on a PS3/360 at shaky 15 fps on early flat panels with terrible input lag.
I guess me falling off platforms constantly is punishment for me cheesing three bosses in a row; Fire Dragon (shot it to death with a crossbow in a place it couldn't get me), Queelag (summoned two players to kill it for me) and Ceaseless Discharge (stood where the armour pick up was and easily dealt with its only attack loop).

Kindle the depths bonfire and move slowly in Blighttown until you reach the first bonfire. You can cheese the three fatsos in the beginning by baiting them, and then running back to the long ladder. They will fall to their death if you stay there. Then just kill the fishmen one by one. The best tactic is to just block one of their hits, then hit back. If they start their pounce, kick them, don't try to evade or you are prone to fall off somewhere.

I think I've done it all backwards as I worked my way through Blight Town from Valley of the Drakes, I've cleared my way through to the Depths exit, now.
But it says the door can only be opened from the other side, I must have missed the key when clearing out the Depths previously. /o\

The regular path is lower undead burg, kill the Capra demon, go through depths and then blighttown.
The regular path is even more punishing, in my opinion, because it takes way longer to reach solid ground.

Agree. When I replay I much prefer taking the Valley of the Drakes path. Going through the Depths and the intended path through Blighttown is a real slog that is tricky to run through, whereas the other way just requires you to dash past a couple of the big club guys and down a few ladders.

I had completely missed The Depths and Lower Undeadberg first playing this and got up to Queelag before my game got corrupted on Steam and I couldn't get it working again, I assumed they were optional areas discovering them this time round.
It just feels like visiting the Darkroot Garden after ringing the first bell is far more heavily signposted, then you turn round and see the route down the cliff face to Valley of the Drakes.

Yeah, there's just like 10 monsters in the way you can't even scratch at that level, and which will probably one-shot you. If that isn't a clear signal for you, I'm not sure what is.

In my original playthrough, I couldn't beat the Capra so going down the Valley route was my only way to progress to Blighttown; not that the Black Knight blocking the way was much easier, but at least I could move around the place and bait him.

How is DS1 for a magic user? Is it 'easy' mode like Demon's and Elden Ring?
Tempted to get back into it and wishlisted it yesterday but the Capra Demon talk is making me remember the bad things about it.

I spent hours getting the parrying timing down so I could beat the Black Knight on the tower next to the fire dragon, that made the ones I met afterwards far easier to deal with.
Then I spent ages trying to parry the Capra Deamon, and that's how I learned they can't be parried.

I rarely use magic but found Pyro really useful on DS1 and you don’t have to use loads of levels too as your Pyro glove upgrades You can beat most bosses just with a strong shield and Combustion / Great Combustion as it’s so fast and you can have several of them on you, meaning you don’t run out

Yeah, Pyromancy is useful, because it doesn't require a big points investment. I haven't tried a Sorcerer yet, but from what I've seen, it seems kind of weak. You can still do decent melee damage with certain int scaled weapons, though, so I guess it can work out.
I have a high faith char at around level 80-90, and it also isn't really that great. It's basically a worse melee character that can do some semi-useful miracles.

Faith always seems a bit of a forgotten build in DS. Some miracles are ok, but mostly very situational or very defensive. You have to get to the lightning ones to get any exciting offensive spells. Very few weapons scale on faith as well, so you don't have that advantage instead. Intelligence and normal magic just gives you more options than faith.
Faith in Elden Ring seems much better accommodated for.
As for magic builds, don't think I've done one in DS1 (in the middle of a coop DS3 game where I am), but I understand the usual rule is shit early game, very easy late game.

I totally forgot about Pyromancy. You have to lean on it pretty heavily on a SL1 run (I got as far as Lost Izalith, then I may have messed up the Solaire questline, who I would have totally needed to beat Gwyn as I struggled with him at SL100 or whatever, so I lost impetus) and it is indeed amazing.
Yeah, Faith might be a challenge, not sure it's worth looking into, cheers.
