There was no way Blade was making its release date anyway, Ali has been busy filming the new Jurassic World. Plus I think 2025 is full of Marvel films as it is.
Ah well. Hopefully if and when it does come out it'll be good.

Watched Echo recently. Perfectly fine, but will probably forget everything about it over the next couple of weeks.
Think it was helped by only being 5 episodes and each one only being about 30 minutes long. 10 episodes of it with almost hour-long running times would have been a real struggle.

I think Marvel should have done an anthology series of hour-ish long one-shots with Echo being an instalment alongside GOTG Xmas and the Werewolf one. Agatha would probably fit that brief too.

At this rate Mahershala Ali is going to be nearly 20 years older than when Snipes took up that mantle by the time Blade hits cinemas.

I think they should have stuck to film and animation. Some of these series could have been good lowish budget 90-120 minute films, like Moon Knight and Hawkeye. Instead they made ‘content’ that cost a fortune.

Yeah, $200m on one streaming show is nuts but they’ve dropped that each on almost all of them

Just pivot to making low budget horror movies with Marvel characters in them. People like horror movies, and they regularly make shitloads of profit.

Especially YA horrors. There’s a reason werewolf by night is probably their most well liked direct to streaming thing.

Someone loses the Thanos glove and it gets picked up by Jigsaw.
Not the Marvel character, the one from the Saw movies.

All three Jurassic World movies made over a billion dollars at the box office, it would appear the audience as well as Universal wants more.

Yeah, $200m on one streaming show is nuts but they’ve dropped that each on almost all of them Apparently Agatha is the cheapest show they've ever made, even cheaper than Echo. I think I read it cost $35m. And I think Secret Invasion is their most expensive, partly due to COVID delays and extensive reshoots.

Secret Invasion saved on the budget with the writing staff at least.

I don’t get how they justify that when a $200m film that makes $100 is a massive bomb. They also don’t get any digital sales income either from the series.
There’s no way they get enough subscribers to give them a return just because of 6 hours of a mediocre marvel show.

Well that's been their whole issue. Netflix boomed, everyone wanted their own streaming service, and then COVID kept everyone indoors watching telly. Disney had these two golden geese in Marvel and Star Wars and pumped everything into D+. Then they realised there was no way to make money on this thing, screeched the brakes and tried to turn around, just as everyone realised that COVID had also seemingly altered people's expectations of, and desire to go to, big summer blockbusters.
So Disney have cut budgets and series orders, hired proper showrunners, and are going for quality over quantity. Except it's like turning an aircraft carrier, it's going to take forever. Agatha and Daredevil are really the first of the new batch of shows, and even then they half-rebooted Daredevil while they were making it. I'm not sure if any of next year's films are going to benefit from their more frugal approach either, they were all greenlit and into production ages ago.

I still don't really get why anyone, especially Disney themselves, is surprised that Disney+ was/is losing a massive amount of money. Netflix didn't really start making a big profit until about 2017/2018, and they spent billions on content in the meantime. Plus they had the market almost entirely to themselves for years.
I just assumed it was a given that Disney+ would lose billions for the first 5 years or so in a quest for growth, and then at that point they'd start doing what all these services do and raising fees and cutting costs.
Disney+ seems to have a massive amount of legacy content. When I search justwatch for movies, and even older shows, it's pretty common for them to only be on Disney+.
Their issue really was that they were trying to go from 0 to 100 with production of *new* tv shows. They have enough movies coming out (unlike someone like netflix who had to start making their own from almost zero), but their new show content was pretty limited. And you need regular high profile big shows to get and keep subscribers.
But then they based their big new show content almost entirely around MCU and Star Wars. The problem with that is that (a) those depts had limited experience with making shows, (b) those are going to be very expensive shows to make, and (c) making all your shows in 2 universes is really limiting and a bit dull.
I mean, they probably do have other shows, but I never hear about any of them. Do they have medical dramas, cooking shows, detective shows, comedy shows, etc...? Who knows.
Also, they have this weird thing with Hulu, which I haven't looked into and seems to differ by region. But it feels like the two should be merged, if they aren't already, as that would give them a much broader range of shows, and stop it feeling like Disney+ is basically MCU+SW+Princesses

They snapped up other services like Hulu to cover the "shows that aren't SW or Marvel" gap.
The Bear, What we do in the shadows, shogun, only murders, res dogs etc. They've got some excellent content, but agreed 100% that they over-egged SW and Marvel content to the point of putting people off it.
/edit Ah, makes sense that you'd think it's a bit rubbish if you don't have access to the Hulu stuff. That's all that keeps me coming back to D+ these days.

The Hulu thing is a bit weird, in the UK we get that content as part of D+ but in the states it's still a separate service that you can get on its own or pay more for a bundle with D+. Maybe because it was still part-owned by Comcast until the end of last year they couldn't merge them so easily. I doubt they'll want to give up the revenues though, Hulu is more expensive than D+ by itself.

It's even more weird over here, as there is also Star, which I think was their existing Asia Disney thing, but I thought Hulu Japan was sold off to some Japanese company. So there's Disney+ (which includes Star) and also a Disney+Hulu bundle (even though I thought Hulu was sold off here). But then some shows like Shogun are on Star. God knows. I did try Hulu over here back when it initially launched, but it was shit for different language/subtitle options. Lots of overseas stuff was only dubbed. I haven't checked it recently to see if that has changed. But if I think Disney+ I basically imagine end to end Star Wars, Marvel and Descendants.

I think Disney thought they’d be different because they have 70+ years of content to draw on.
I still prefer the Apple approach of less but aiming only for good stuff, not trash. Unfortunately that’s not what the majority want based on viewing figures.

I think its a chicken and egg thing with apple. They concentrate on a drip feed of high quality content which means there isn't ever enough to keep you subbed. If some of these shows were on Netflix where they have enough supplemental landfill to keep you occupied they would be genuine smash hits.
Like the trailer for Severance dropped yesterday and my first reaction was 'damn, my free trial will be up by then'.

Iirc they rushed Disney+ out here to take advance of pandemic caused interest in this kind of thing, so just chucked it all together rather than splitting it up like they did in the US. So we actually got great value over here!

I actually prefer watching weekly episodes, but I've been burned with so many MCU tv series that started good and then went meh, so I'm just waiting to get some verdicts from people who've seen the entire thing.
