I enjoyed Berseria. A lot of Tales games have extra systems you can just ignore like the Field of Fonons (or whatever it was called) in Abyss...

I turned on AI for all characters mid-way through and let them fight it out themselves. I enjoyed it more that way.

I always quit Tales Of games around half way or at best 3/4 (Symphonia, Vesperia, Abyss, Eternia). I think a lot of these games have these really slow points during the story and backtracking that burn me out. I also still cant love the combat after trying 6 different games.

This seems to have flown under the radar. Garage: Bad Dream Adventure, one of the rarest Japanese games of its time, is now available on mobile and actually translated.
The price is low, so I've bought it for myself. But I guess they wouldn't bother translating it for just a mobile port, so it might arrive to PC later.

I think I saw news on it a while back (and possibly 'acquired' the PC version( but I had forgotten about it. Might have to check it out if on Android. Price seems reasonable at under a fiver so may bite even though I rarely buy mobile stuff...

From what I've read, this new version also has several gameplay improvements and quality of life upgrades over the fan-translated PC version. So it could be worth it regardless.

Never mind Elden Ring, probably my most anticipated game coming out in the next few months is The Cruel King and the Great Hero for PS4 and Switch in March
That art style š like a children's book come to life. Gameplay looks to be pretty standard 2d turn-based fare, which is fine by me

I was interested about Blind Prince, but read some middling reviews.
NIS games are always the niche of niche. Hard to believe that will ever change.

I enjoyed Blind Prince so will likely preorder this too. At least we have physicals in Europe this time.
The Yomawari games were cool too (in the niche NISA games).

Anyone else tried the Monark demo?
Never played a Furyu game before. I'll admit that it was only under my radar because of the Kaf theme song. But if you get past the laughable setting, cringe dialogue and terrible graphics, it doesn't seem so bad. Might even think about it later on.
But I know a few people who only picked up the collaboration album, so it seems that might be the biggest draw.

Hadn't really heard of it, but I've been craving a JRPG on the PS5, so I'll check it out. Thanks for the headsup. Does look a bit like a Persona clone though, doesn't it? Which reminds me, I have The Caligula Effect to play through.

I had a little go on the Japanese demo and plan to check out the English one. The game is on my radar.

Playing the demo, but I don't think it's for me. For one, I'm kind of tired of all these high school based JRPGs, which is kind of all we're getting outside Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Tales. And secondly, I'm not a big fan of the combat either. It reminds me of Vagrant Story, where you run around with the analog stick then press X to select a target to attack, but it doesn't have VS' specific body part selection which gave it some depth.
Superficially, it's a PS5 game that looks like it came out of the early 2000s. The graphics look like a Dreamcast game emulated/upscaled to 4K.
It'll probably find an audience though, as it doesn't seem so much bad as just not for me.

Which reminds me, I have The Caligula Effect to play through. It looks Persona-ish at a glance, but the battle system is very different. The general feeling is also quite different, when you get past the first impression.

Did you know that Square Enix actually published Final Fantasy VIII on a PS4 disc? I didn't. It's rather affordable too, and despite owing the original since the 2000s I'd never even booted it up.
All on a single disc, slightly spruced up, what could go wrong?
Why couldn't Final Fantasy IX have got the disc release? This has to be one of the most intolerable PS1 JRPGs I've ever played, I'd rather play Beyond the Beyond. The World doesn't need more copies of this game, the millions they printed for the PS1 were more than adequate.

FF8 is probably my favourite one, especially of the PS1 era. Dreamy Squall

At the time I said VIII, but VII really does hold up the best. If it's not my favorite game of all time, it's definitely top 3. A Link to the Past is for sure the other big contender, then I'd have to sit and a think for the third option. What I'd have said 10 or 20 years ago was surely different than it'd be today. But FFVII and LoZ:ALTTP are all time classics.

Picked up Ys VIII on last week's sale, and also Tokyo Xanadu eX+ on the current one.
Really wish Falcom games went on sale more often. Played a bit of Ys last night, and just started Xanadu. I like the combat. It's kind of button mashy, but fights are over so quick that it feels fun.
Also really like that they have manual saves just anywhere in the world, along with autosaves. For how old school these look, I really expected them to have save points.
I kind of want to try Trails as well, but I'm not sure if I have the patience for turn based combat anymore.

It's quite a different game but if you get the chance Xanadu Next is really good. They did a great job in the port with mostly porting a mouse and keyboard game to gamepad controls. Very different to Tokyo Xanadu though!
I find that Falcom stuff does tend to go on sale with the big sales but they kind of hit a certain point and then take a long while to come down further. I'll probably pick up Ys 9 when my Steam Deck arrives, but I'm not discounting getting 8 as well as I actually like that game more.

Xanadu Next has a modern console port?
I enjoyed Tokyo Xanadu on Vita when it came out. May replay the EX+ version on Steam Deck when I get it.
In other news, the delayed Undernauts European release arrived today. Busy finishing Mary Skelter on Vita though...

I checked after uiriki's post and it's not available on PS4 or Vita. Assuming he meant for Steam then. I might check it out after I play through Tokyo.

There's a demo for Relayer available on PS5 and 4.
I think it's meant to let you play up to 7 chapters...
Maaaaaaaan
I spent about an hour with it last night and only fought 2 3-5 minute battles. The trailers and description show it to be a tactical RPG, and to be fair, that is how combat plays out. But it's much, MUCH more visual novel than anything else.

Not sure if anyone here's interested in Ghostwire Tokyo, but Tango released a free visual novel prequel on PSN.

New trailer and release date for Trails from Zero. Cannot wait for this, the fan translated PSP version I played was janky but amazing. Incredible game.

I started Zero on PC after finishing 3rd. Not got hugely far into it so may have to decide on a console version and this theoretically should run nicely on Switch unlike the later Cold Steels (where I went PS4 but may double dip on PC if Steam Deck can handle them nicely). Enjoyed what I played of Zero though.

I really think the series lost something in the transition to full 3D in the Cold Steel games. I much prefer the isometric games (Sky, Crossbell)
Plus I hated Rean as a character which didn't help.

Van is basically a more competent Rean with a less nasal voice and Kuro was a much better game in spite of itsā¦ technical challenges. Looking forward to seeing how that story goes on; they did a good job with the āthis threat is done and thereās a proper emotional climax but youād better strap in because itās going to get crazyā type ending. Hopefully they donāt scuff it but letās face it, previous form shows that they absolutely will.
Iām at the point where Iām saving up JRPGs for when I get my Steam Deck. Blue Reflection, the new Atelier, and Iām really looking forward to having Soul Hackers for it.
