Anyone else looking forward to this?
I was slightly annoyed it isn't coming out for the Xbox, so I have just used my Xbox reward points to buy Amazon vouchers and have bought the PS5 edition. Cheers Microsoft.
I loved the original game, the turn based combat is the best of any turn based game that's ever been made IMO. The music is also incredible, I always get goosebumps listening to the soundtrack transition into the boss battle music, its so expertly done. I have to turn my headphones right up.
Played the demo for the sequel last night and I am pleased that they haven't let their standards slip at all when it comes to the quality. Another excellent soundtrack, except this time the graphics seem even more detailed, its quite lovely.
I always said that if this series featured an overarching plot and ditched the individual story lines, it would have the potential to be one of the greatest RPG's of all time. While I enjoy the individual stories, it can feel a little disjointed.

I liked the demo for this much more than what I played of the original, which I found a bit boring. Toying with the idea of preordering but I’ve got Like A Dragon Ishin on the go at the moment so we’ll see how quickly I get through that first.

Pre-ordered and ready! (although I probably should finally finish Xenoblade 3 before I start this one...)
I loved the first one, separate storylines and all (although it did feel a little weird when your character was, for example, thrown in jail and the game acted as if they were alone with no one to rescue them, but it could mostly be handwaved as them being separated and then stuff happening before the rest of the party could mount a rescue attempt or something) and I'm more than excited for more of it. The music, the art style, all of it was great!

Can't make up my mind between PS5 and switch for this. The last one ran like poo on the switch from what I remember (I mean seriously?!?)
Portability, though... Plus I like having a series of games on the same console for no real reason...
PS5 one is under £40 on Hit, which is swaying me that way.

dfunked The original I initially bought on the Switch, but there was no denying that the Switch version was quite blurry when compared to the Xbox and PC versions. I eventually sold the Switch version and bought in on my PC. I chose PS5 this time over Switch because the much sharper visuals and higher frame rate deserve to be shown off. I think a lot of the details will be lost on the Switch. Unless you really need it portable, I would say go with PS5 and revel in those glorious 2D-HD pixels.

It's pretty good on Steam Deck, a solid 60 when UE decides that it's going to present frames properly and very fast loading.

Rinsed the first one on PC. Took a ridiculously huge number of hours.
Will probably end up doing the same with this one, but I’m in no rush and will probably wait until it comes down in price a bit.

I don't remember the first game looking bad on Switch. The depth of field effect was a bit strong, but I assumed that was an artisit decision.

From the demo I played on the PS5, it still has the depth of field, but it seems less aggressive this time. You can also turn off the darkened corners now (vignette?). Don't know why you would ever want to darken the corners of your screen anyway, so the option to turn it off is welcome.
I never thought the Switch version looked bad.....until I played the PC version, then I realized how much sharper the PC version is. I guess the Switch version is fine if you are not likely to compare it at all with other versions. Ignorance is bliss. Also if you play it handheld rather than on a big TV then it looked fine.

Preordered this ages ago and it's ready to go, but I started Cyberpunk thinking I had loads of time to complete it and then...Theatrhythm came out and I've stuck about 20 hours into that, oops.
Must focus on Cyberpunk so I can get on this ASAP. I played the first game when recovering from some pretty serious surgery and it really helped me through that. Battle system is absolute *chefs kiss*.

Yeah I cant overstate just how good the battle system in Octopath is. Coupled with the excellent soundtrack (especially boss battle musics), and it all comes together so well. I need to finish Hogwarts before I start this. Its so tempting to start another game, but then you never finish anything that way. I will only ever at most have 2 games on the go at once, and one of them HAS to be a short game. No way I can have 2 large RPGS on the go.

Hah, I'm the same. Two games max and I try to stick to different genres too. Coming to the end of Dead Space which frees up a slot, but the other one is Soul Hackers 2 that I'll have to smash through the ending of too.
Arrived yesterday, so I'll definitely be using Hit a bit more.

I was randomly listening to the OST from the first game today. It is SUCH a banger, I almost want to play the second game for the music alone.

I need to finish the first game. Combat system is undeniably good.
I think I drifted away as I somehow managed to reach a point where I felt underlevelled though. Not sure if I missed something, or maybe it's by design but it felt like I'd need to go out my way to grind levels to catch back up.
At this point I would need to start again as I can't really recall what I'm doing or how to play properly, so I'm not sure I'll rush to get the sequel.
I do wish the stories interlinked a bit more.

You shouldn't need to grind. As long as you're doing all the side bits and working through every character's 'chapter 1' before moving on to starting a 'chapter 2', etc...
Honestly, by the time you're playing through the 3rd chapters, you're going to be over-leveled and there's no way back from it. Come the end of the game you'll be steam rolling everything.

I tried that but I must have missed something, can't recall exactly how fast I got now but the suggest levels were much higher than my party :/

Its been a few years, so perhaps I'm forgetting something glaringly obvious, but I definitely didn't need to battle anything to level up. It is definitely a tougher game at the start, but if you're within a level or 2 of the suggested level, its usually fine. You'll hit the required level quite quickly as you explore the enviroments between towns.

I agree with dangerousdave I did all the side missions and explored a bit and I found myself woefully overlevelled in the latter half of the game. There are some creatures/enemies in the game that appear during certain circumstances which gives you a tonne of XP. I cannot remember where they appear now but when they do you go up about 5 or 6 levels at a time.

Yeah they're called Cait Sith or something like that. They're very hard to hit, unfortunately.
I found myself doing a bit of grinding in the first game, but it wasn't hours and hours of it. It was a bit annoying all the same, though, especially when one of the character slots was locked in until you finished one of the stories.
Anyway, I still liked the first one overall. I'm well up for a sequel once I'm done with Fire Emblem.

Started with Hikari and have recruited the alchemist and the dancer so far. About four hours in and fuck me, the battle system is just absolute *chefs kiss*.
It's very similar to the first game, but with some excellent advancement, particularly in terms of the direction with some powerful skills used etc.
Wonderful. Got a free day for the whole of Sunday and plan to just sit and play the whole day.

I started with Partitio the Merchant. The merchant had the best overall stats in the original and the hired help ability was fantastic. His arrow of fortune ability in this is amazing, gaining job points and new abilities so quickly.
I still have Throne the thief to unlock but I have tried all the others
I quite like the apothecary in this. It was always good in the original, with the exception of the early game before you unlocked their best abilities. It seems more useful in this early on though.
It actually seems to me that all characters have more options available to them from the start, which means I will probably be swapping them all out frequently.

Finding chapter 1 for each character a bit of a ballache. It'd be nice if it let you bring your levelled up character into them, rather than forcing you to grind up to level 9 or so to take down the boss.
Cracking game so far. All characters unlocked and thief, scholar and dancer opening chapters done. Hopefully the dancer's story takes a darker twist at some point though. Quite a difference in tone to the first game!

I don't mind the dancer having a cheerier, Tressa-type story with how dark some of the other characters' premises seem to be tbh. Would be a nice contrast to Primrose, too. Only played through Throné's chapter 1 so far (decided to start with the thief for a change and it's already paying off). I don't know how and if I'll be able to incorporate "Give yourself a hand" in my diss library but damn Early favourite for sure, and not just because of that

Yeah, the dancer in Octopath 1 had the grimmest grimdark story that ever grimdarked. So I'm happy for that character to be the "I want to be the very best, like no-one ever was!" one this time around.
I love the merchant, he's like the nicest ruthless capitalist you'll ever meet.

Almost done with the final chapters now.
It's a great game. The battle system was already superb in the first one, and they've made it even better!
They put a lot more effort this time into giving you more interaction between the characters. They still don't really participate in each other's stories, but the pair chapters and such make a huge difference. And I'm even possibly interested in doing the post game content, which doesn't happen a lot with me!

I have to admit, I am struggling with this one, and I adored the previous game.
The graphics, music and gameplay are all sublime. It just feels far too similar for me and the individual stories are just not grabbing me as much.
Probably didn't help that I bought a Steam Deck the other week and got somewhat sidetracked. I wish I had waited and bought it on Steam and not the PS5. Would have been perfect for the Deck.
I'll dip in and out and still finish it. May just take me a while. Unless anyone wants to buy it off me and I will reconsider re-buying on Steam.

To each their own, but to me this is leaps and bounds ahead of the first game - and I liked the first game!
Every problem with the first one has been addressed. The game even has a proper ending!

For what it’s worth it’s a near-perfect 60 on the Deck. It sounds counter-intuitive but you have to set the frame limiter to 120 to stop UE4 from interfering and let the Deck limit it itself but rut really is almost perfectly smooth.
I finished one story and have been running into a few walls - the game clearly intends for you to run multiple stories at once but I’ll bash my way through nonetheless. With all the side stuff it feels almost like a Saga game but a bit less obtuse.

Almost 65 hours in now, got Hikari complete and all other seven on their final chapters and pretty much level 45 or above except two characters I think (tbf, 43 and 40 respectively).
One annoyance I've had is getting Caits or Octopuffs to appear. I have two of each item to make more appear, got the More Rare Monsters skill and I've seen four in my playthrough, and two ran away so I've actually had to grind levels. Everything I look at online, be it articles, Reddit or YouTube provides no answers above what I'm already doing and they're getting them to appear every few fights!
