Finally something that replicates the conversation wheels I see in real life.

But in all seriousness, I don't particularly want or need games to look like real life. To me that kind of fidelity is not a particularly useful or valuable thing to aim for.

I really don’t know why you would want to play a game that looks like a racist live streaming a school shooting.

Pretty much confirms that we're in a simulation.

I wonder what the actual final game will look like on most people's PCs.
It's cool I guess but not sure anything I saw there made want to actually play it.

I'm getting some smoke and mirrors vibes, the way the character or whatever is looking around independently of his body in the same naturalistic way that Killzone 2's bullshot heavy E3 trailer tried to foist onto us back in 2005 or whatever.
Anyway, you're all a bunch of Debbie Contrarians, I can't think of a single time in my life gamers didn't want realistic graphics - outside of defending their shitty platform of choice to the death.
However, it is a slightly more than just a little unsettling.

I mean, my brain usually fills in the gaps for me. I remember getting my copy of Wave Race 64 and thinking that water will never look this good ever again. Which is obviously wrong, but at the time I thought it looked like the most realistic thing ever.
And these days, the graphics standard for most big budget things is so high that it basically doesn't matter for me. A shit game will be shit no matter how realistic it looks.

Besides, real life is fucking boring. Give me stylised fantasy graphics any day of the week.

I've very often said I prefer stylised graphics to realism. Art design beats graphical fidelity. But I prefer, for example, Timesplitters art style to Call of Duty's "realism".
Even the "realistic" games I like have lighting effects and ambiences that are hyper-real rather than actually real - like the difference between a film with artful cinematography and actual real life.
Maybe that's splitting hairs but it's a very important distinction.
Additionally we're going to bump into the uncanny valley more, if something looked photorealistic you'd notice those moments of getting stuck on scenery all the more.
Anyway, assuming that Unrecord is actually legit, at best it's rendered using the in game engine. The head movements would be abysmal to actually play as there is too movement. Plus how the fuck you are supposed to actually aim is a mystery, unless it's lock on targeting.

Well he has released another video showing its gameplay footage as he is moving about in game and making erratic movements.
So there's that question answered.

Depends on genre and what you want from it, I guess. In a racing sim I like realistic graphics, but in shooters I'll take something that looks like Doom or Borderlands over realism any day. That may be related to how I like shooters to play, I want them to be gamey with rocket jumps and shit, so why would I want realistic graphics.
Someone else might like realistic shooters but prefer Mario Kart for racing. If you want a shooting sim, I guess desiring realistic graphics makes perfect sense. It's just not for me.

People only want realistic graphics until they realised they couldn't see things clearly anymore.
Now they want all interactable objects lathered in yellow paint marks to distinguish them.

You say that but loads of people ask for those yellow climbing markers to be removed.

It's pretty impressive, if legit. It's helped out by barely showing any npcs though, and blurring out the faces. (Maybe AI Artists should learn to blur out or hide hands like that 80s comic book dude)
Every time there's some kind of big graphical leap in terms of realistically shooting people I feel a bit uncomfortable. I remember the Kingpin demo actually feeling quite disturbing to play because you were murdering people in violent ways that felt overly realistic. Though of course now it looks like a bunch of blurry polygons.
So I always wonder if at some point we're going to get to the point where graphics are just too real for that kind of thing. Then I look at the US and realize we're inexorably heading for

It would be interesting to see some sort of compilation of all the ‘OMG PHOTOREALISTIC IS HERE’ games over the years. We’ve been saying it since at least PS1 era.
This looks (graphically) incredible, but I bet in 20 years times we’ll look back on this in the same way we look back on older games now. The things that look good are doing the heavy lifting for the bits that don’t and our brains haven’t learned yet to not get distracted.

I wish I could remember where I saw it but I read an article a while ago about how hard coded game language is and one example was having to change the exploding barrel colours back to red because literally nobody could solve the puzzle when they were blue. Every play tester just refused to shoot them.

I feel like there's a joke about Racism in the US to be made there, but I'm not sure it would be in good taste.

I know the exact article you mean, can't remember where it was though. Even had red barrels in the title I believe.
