My brain is refusing to accept that is genuine gameplay footage. Its got to be some kind of AI job, right? No one is spending the time to create all those assets for a start, are they?

It's going to turn out that was just filmed footage with some computer stuff added to it.

This would be quite a stylised approach to take your FPS game, with the whole body cam thing. Only problem is that almost every other FPS treats the human eye like a camera anyway. Interesting that this is being made by a French developer. The French certainly don't hold back with what they feel about authority figures, so I could see this having a bit more going on than just "be cool police guy and fuck up some narcs". It could go either way though. Their response to the question as to whether the game will have a political angle is impressive in its ability to both say "we will have a message to convey, but any message you receive will be your own fault" - store.steampowered.com/news/app/2381520/view/3731837715777257210As for realistic Vs stylised, I personally also prefer something more stylised (which, to be fair, this is kind of going for with its body cam gimmick). However, the more realism possible does add more to the game makers toolkit. I certainly don't see the increased options as a negative.

cubby No youtu.be/sNKpN0wFeeIAs impressive as it looks there is nothing moving in the environment and almost nothing in the way of ai. You can just throw resources into making it look shiny, either way you wouldn't see it looking anything like this on current consoles or 99 percent of pc's out there.

I was sure it was footage and fake and then the little gun-torchy thing went on and instantly the lighting was just a *fraction* off and it looked like a video game. Odd.
I mean, we’re going in this direction, ever more fidelity, whether our aged arses want it or not.

The lighting still feels a tad game-engine-y, but it's pretty good. The corpses don't cast realistic shadows which made them feel out of place. I think that's one of the problems with realistic graphics, every little detail has to be perfect, just one little imperfection and it feels weird.

I came to post this yesterday after seeing the LevelCap video commentary (he's covered an earlier demo before) but you beat me to it. Anyways here it is, same footage with this dude talking all over it but it also has some other demo reel footage of work by the animator

There’s a bit in the “proof” video about 4 minutes in where he passes through trees that look and act like assets from the 90s. He just walks right through them. The effect is very Sharknado type genre of film feeling with live action overlaid with ultra basic cgi.

I think horror games can profit from ultra-realistic graphics, but otherwise I also don't see much merit in it.
I mean, I am impressed and would still play it just to enjoy the graphics, but when I think back what games I enjoyed most, none of them had what was considered at the time to be "realistic graphics".

I'm not even sure that it looks that much more realistic than other games, when you take away the animation of the camera. The camera and the hand animations are doing a lot of the work to making it seem real.

I guess part of my hesitancy is that games are already too expensive, and take too long to make. If "looks exactly like real life" became the expected standard, wouldn't that just make all of that worse?
But I guess tech advances regardless, so hey ho.

Did they say if it was a proprietary engine at all or off the shelf like UE?

Have there been any other UE5 games that have gone for a realistic look and used all the features? The only ones I can think of are fantasy heavy ones (like the new Hellblade) or very cartoony (Fortnite). The last time we saw it go for a realistic environment, I think, would be The Matrix tech demo and I would guess the engine has come quite a long way since then.

If "looks exactly like real life" became the expected standard, wouldn't that just make all of that worse? But I guess tech advances regardless, so hey ho. There are so many tools and techniques that accelerate this nowadays that arguably it will end up be substantially more expensive to do the NON realistic stuff. Photogrammetry, AI textures, AI rigging, all of this is going to become pretty trivial and some of it already is - I think DICE had inlined the photogrammetry stuff already in their process, for example. The pain will just move somewhere else in the development process, no doubt.

Oh ok then. I dunno, it looks good but I think the post processing is doing a lot here, I think the lighting is pretty good but the low fidelity of the camera is making it look more realistic than it actually would if it was just a raw image. It's got its publicity because of the subject matter but it's an indie project first and foremost.

Was it UE5 that they used to make Matrix 4?

You say that but loads of people ask for those yellow climbing markers to be removed. Those guys already struggle to distinguish objects in real life. Or maybe struggling to distinguish things is what makes you a hardcore gamer.

The problem with the yellow climbing markers is the inconsistency of the environments and what you're allowed to climb (and what you aren't).
Games like God of War and Uncharted have these markers because there's loads of other similar looking walls that you aren't allowed to climb. If they took the yellow markers off completely it'd be a trial and error shitshow.
I really dislike them - it's a sticking plaster solution to a modern day 'invisible wall' problem.

Yeah, but you could solve that problem in a way less intrusive way than adding yellow highlights into the environment.

The correct way to fix it is by having every wall climbable and let physics do it's job.

I like the yellow paint markers, my gaming time has drastically reduced in recent years, anything that helps stop me from wasting time in game is alright by me.

Photorealism and a strong style or even stylistation are not mutually exclusive, films can look wildly different, and in completely different ways, after all. Wes Anderson’s visuals, Star Wars design, the architecture in Blade Runner or Black Panther, etc. I find stylization on that level not any less interesting.

I've had another look and whilst it is fairly impressive, it does use a few tricks - I'm not sure the actual textures, whilst good for the most part, are all that beyond what other games have done. most of the realism is down to approximating the effects of a bodycam, the fish eye-lens, the slight chromatic aberation, some light blur, and the way in which it sways with the player character movement - basically all the shit that a lot of gamers like to complain about and end up turning off in settings.
