I'm definitely finding eq a more relaxing experience this time round. I know how long it takes to get high level, and I'm just not fussed. It's just great to wander around, getting my head around it again and having a nice chilled experience. Its still got that awesome secret little world feeling, and coupled with a nice glass of red and a smoke, it's basically bliss!

I can imagine the p1999 stuff to be quite chilled and stripped back. When I logged into the official servers it was like being assaulted by a UI, albeit a very flexible one. So many windows.
So I did manage to get p1999 sorted yesterday (I had some issues with the email validation) and popped on very briefly to take a look. The first thing that struck me is that it is somehow even older than I remember EQ looking! I couldn't find the settings menu for about 10 minutes, and struggled to get out of Surefall Glade as it was so dark and for some reason my mouse control was a bit turgid.
If I'm remembering right, I started playing just before Plains of Power, where there was a bit of a visual upgrade (for the time!) so most of my memories were in a slightly different era I think. So I ended up actually logging into the test server on the present version, buffing a char to 25, and then looking around Blackburrow for a bit.
I may pop back into p1999 again to take another look, but I'm unsure if I want to commit to the grind!

Nice one. I did noticed on the installation section on the p99 site that you can load the expansion UI's to make it look like it did at the time. At the moment, as it's going through Scars of Velious, that's the UI you can load if you want. I played it from day 1, and I didn't load the Velious UI, and it all looks normal to me. The windows I have are - Spells going down vertically from top left Bottom left is the hotkeys - melee attack, find, forage etc NExt to that are the mini menus - sit / camp/exit etc Then bottom middle is the main chat window Bottom right is party window, including yourself Middle right is buffs/debuffs active Once I went into options (Alt-O) and sorted the videomode out and all the key bindings and windows, I selected full screen mode and then everything looked good. (Note, if you ever alt-tab out of it to do something else for a minute, when you alt-tab back to the game, it'll be a bit fucked again - you just need to go into Options again, Display and click FullScreen mode again and it sorts it each time). It occasionally crashes on exit but it doesn't seem to affect anything. I'm not really in the mood for min/maxing a level 50 character at all really. If you do pop back, the most action seems to be on the "P99 Everquest Green PVE Server". That's where I am anyway. Character is a druid called Vinylblair. |

Saying that about the grind, I'm level 5 now and have some half decent spells and it's about time to go and sort those Crushbone orcs out I think.
But I just love fighting undead in this game. I'm definitely going to unrest when I hit 14-16. And this time I'll have SoW which will bloody help travelling.

EQ had me from release (98?) till 2007ish, with a few gaps for WoW at the end of that. Played cleric, couldn't do shit without a team of other people, can't make a game like that now, people would be rioting in the streets that they couldn't solo everything that moved.
No real interest in playing again, I've tried going back a few times, but I got a bit in deep with the raiding thing and it seems like revisiting an old job now. The game looks like going forever though, 29th expansion due this year.

I peaked in vanilla WoW, was first Horde player on my server to get that priest staff from the long quest line that involved the final piece from Majordomo in molten core, saved up my raid points and had it before the favoured guy in our many guild raid group.
After a few others had it I started my own guild with a bunch of local mates and properly enjoyed the game at my own pace, sat in the auction most days and just using mods to sell glyphs when the 3rd expansion came out and got lost in all that shit for a couple of years.

So I think I'm going to try and find some time to persevere, for a little while, at least. I figure even if its just chipping away over a many short sessions where I can fit them in.
My ranger is called Deeky, because I have literally zero imagination.

Nice one. I was invited to a guild called friendly druids. I accepted for the social aspect but it it's a but odd. They keep recruiting people every 5 minutes. It seems a chilled guild though but I may leave it at some point.
I'm more about either soloing or friendly group stuff tbh away from all the hullabaloo.

Thinking about it, how easy is it for you to get to freeport from qeynos? Because i have the route down from me to freeport now. Another one to think about.
I'm liking this jaunt because after looking at all the maps it's made me realise how little of it I've explored, expansion wise. I'm really enjoying the "tool up and set out on an adventure journey" bit at the moment.

OK cool. Let's take it easy as you know what it's like.
I think at this level, you just lose your corpse on death. Well, tbh, with my luck I can guarantee that's the case as I've died loads. The tricky part is a) finding your corpse after spawning god knows where away from it, and b) managing to get to it to pick up all your stuff. You can use the /corpse command to 'drag' it towards you if you're close, if you remember.
Your bank stuff is unaffected but I'm getting back into the habit of selling everything, banking all the cash and leaving with food and drink so I lose the minimum if I die. The hard part is your equipment. You've got to get that back manually.
