I turned off trophy notifications hoping that would help. It kind of did for a while but a year or so ago I turned them back on and can't even remember why. I resent the irrational monkey rewards part of my brain that enjoys getting achievement notifications.

I resent the irrational monkey rewards part of my brain that enjoys getting achievement notifications. Really depends. If it's just "You have done the thing that everyone has also done at this point of the game", then achievements are completely pointless and it's frankly just bad design. But it's nice if they are somewhat rare or the achievement looks good, has a fitting title etc. I never really bother paying attention to them so I just get them or I don't.

"Yes, you can pet the dog" achievements rile me up. It was mildly amusing at first, but feels like every game with animals that can be petted needs to have an achievement like that in it now. Wrong thread I suppose.

Playing the game with the wiki open.
All those games which are really good at letting you roll with bad decisions, or unintended consequences, are ruined if you've already read how to get the "good ending" on the wiki. Ooh this RPG decision is tricky, should I side with A or B? What's the best gun? How should I build companion X's skills? Which quest path gives the best reward?
It always starts innocently enough: wiki'ing the solution to some minor poorly designed puzzle, and before I know it I'm looking up every quest, map, and character before I even see them in game.

"Adjust the brightness until you can't see the image on the left." I wish they'd let you specify whether it's late at night or the middle of a sunny afternoon with a beam of sunlight shining directly onto the TV screen.

I have to admit doing this with Demon’s Souls, basically playing the game (offline, of course) like someone building a chest of drawers from IKEA. “Insert sword G into Phantom F in Dark Tendency… eh? If any parts are missing please contact the giant manta rays in World 2 and grind…”

Checking phone during cut-scenes or mission briefs then being annoyed about being dumped into a level “without being told what I need to do”

When given multiple paths I'll pick one, get about halfway through, change my mind and go to the other paths. I'll then repeat the same with those.

But it's nice if they are somewhat rare or the achievement looks good, has a fitting title etc. I never really bother paying attention to them so I just get them or I don't. Achievements have broken me, and not because I actively hunt them out* but because I now expect the ping of recognition, and I actively think less of a game if it doesn't give it. For instance, I expect one after completing every level, and I also expect them for pretty early-doors simple stuff to ease you into a game. Quite often I'll tut to myself "that should have been an achievement." And it really makes me not want to play anything on the Switch because I get annoyed that they don't have achievements. It's not even the score or anything, it's just that I've been conditioned (or maybe I was always like this and achievements just allowed it to manifest more openly) to essentially tick things off, to have an official record of tasks completed. Sometimes I think that's all I do when I game, tick things off either officially or just mentally. And I love it! I enjoy it! But I also think it's probably a bit daft. *This isn't actually true as I will go out of my way to get certain achievements, but only if I like a game and really enjoy playing it. Grindy stuff almost never, but things like in Civ where you have to have a Slinger unit last until the Atomic Age, or things like getting a car to the top of a building in Crackdown? Those sorts of challenges I just adore.

I should just resign myself to one route and if I miss something, I miss it, but the completionist in me just won’t allow it. That’s a habit that has plagued me for decades.

I'm still regretting picking Yennefer over Triss in The Witcher 3. Haven't got the time to replay so I'm stuck with her for life.

I'm just amazed that people realised there was a meaningful choice to be made between Yennifer or Triss. I just always say yes in games, why would you say no?

Quick Resume has made it so easy to switch between games that I'm finding it harder to sink a couple of hours into one game and instead jump from game to game every 30 minutes or so.

I stayed with Yenn out of some misplaced loyalty as we were already kind of together anyway because bound by fate yadda yadda yadda, but Triss was the one that got away. And boy what a battleaxe Yenn turned out to be. I felt incomplete before I met her, now I feel finished. I was looking in the mirror the other day and said to her "Yen, I look in the mirror and all I see is a fat middle-aged man with his best years behind him. What I really need is a compliment." So she says "Well, your eyesight is perfect". I said "You dirty dog!"

I never got that far in Witcher 3. Romance options always leave me in a state of decision paralysis and I generally end up with nobody.
Modern RPGs such as Bioware's recent output leave me in a state of discomfort rather, seeking the opposite. Where I avoid any non-mandatory interaction just so there's no chance they'll think I'm interested. That's why I emphasise 'modern' RPGs, it could be anybody, don't rule out animal vegetable and mineral... Turning up to ruin your evening and molest you.

I mostly don't try to figure out the tricks of a game anymore.
Guitar Hero or Beat Saber? Go to a higher level than you are able for and try to survive. 100% on a lower level is boring even though it helps with surviving the higher levels.
Europa Universalis 4? Don't learn the dynamics/multipliers etc. Just plow on with what sounds good. 1000+ hours and I'm still shite, but plenty more hours to be played and enjoyed yet.
Football Manager? The same. Don't look for tactics that work in this version or known good players. Start at the bottom and try to dig upwards (usually with a tactic that minimises squad numbers (flat 4-3-3)). Seems like an honest way to play but it isn't. Save-scumming happens at least once a year, but not more than 3 times. Some kind of weird cheater's limit.
So lots of weird and not very clever quirks. Seems to help with prolonging the immersion though.

When there’s 2 paths to choose from and one’s a dead-end with some loot while the other leads onwards, I get genuinely annoyed if it isn’t obvious which one is which.

Agreed - let me do all the optional/dead-end paths first.
I'll go so far down a path and think "nah, this one is too long, must be the 'main' path, I'll do the other one".
Was a nightmare for the FROM games where everything circles back on itself half the time.

I chose Yenn mostly because Triss seemed... I dunno, kinda needy. I don't really care either way. Just let me chop up the monsters.

Also, there's nothing wrong with scouting. No sense in being taken from the rear.

I'm not sure it qualifies as a habit, but I have noticed that my first attempt at a boss fight is usually the best one I'll manage until I finally beat it, often multiple tries later.
Does that make sense?
Like, this evening I fought the Giant Toad in Nioh, and got him down to about 15% of his health bar on my first attempt. Then he pulled out some instakill move I hadn't seen before, so I shrugged and went back to try again, feeling fairly confident; several deaths later, I hadn't come close to matching my initial performance, so I called it quits for the day.

Honestly, that tends to be the rule, not the exception If you don't beat the boss on the first try but do well, it often takes a few quick deaths to beat the "Eh it's not so bad, I can do this" hubris out of you so you can do some proper attempts again...

Happens all the time for me in souls games. Learned it's best to have a few attempts and then just have a break. Usually come back and do it in the first couple of attempts after that
I think it's because you get too focused and overthink it. Need to come back fresh and rely on those reflexes

One time I rented X-Men 2: Wolverine’s Revenge from Blockbuster. Got hopelessly stuck against the Juggernaut boss and finally turned the game off at about 3am. Couldn’t not think about anything other than the Juggernaut boss and didn’t get an ounce of sleep.
