Unlike the Game Mechanics you hate for any reason thread, I thought that perhaps there’s just as many player habits that might sour an experience or make things a slog for no better reason but to satisfy an annoying, reinforced habit picked up from games over the years.
One of the many annoying habits I have is to fully uncover any map that slowly reveals itself to the player as they walk through it. The first game I can think of I did this for was Xenoblade on the Wii. It’s a fantastic game with some beautiful locations, but I can’t help but reveal the entire map in each location, just in case I miss a side quest or collectible or some kind. It massively extended my playtime for a game that is already massive.
It’s probably for the best that I never bought the remaster on Switch.

I'm the same. Makes me think of Diablo 2 - walk around the outside of the area first, then the inside bits, then inbetween. Have to kill all enemies as well. I know a lot of people just go straight for the bosses D:
Completionist stuff in general. Fortunately I'm lazy so usually can't be arsed but it does annoy me to leave things unfinished, even if I know I don't care about them

Constant reloading after firing a few shots. Having been killed in the early days of CoD by having a mostly empty magazine, i now routinely reload too soon. Been killed many times by meeting another team mate of theirs mid-reload.
Annoyingly, i always instinctively do this with lmgs too, even with a 100 round mag with loads of bullets left AND a massive reload time. D'oh.
Looting the shit out of everywhere in rpgs and searching almost *everything*. It's almost bordering on ocd.

Ha, yeah. Spending 10 minutes agonising over what to ditch from your inventory in Fallout because you're overencombered, only to 30 seconds later pick up a load more stuff and have to do it all again

People that take ages comparing every single drop they pick up while in the levelling period of a game. It's going to get outclassed in a couple of minutes, if it's not obviously better don't worry about it.

Always have to have a look through the options menu before I start a game. Makes sense on PC I suppose, but is a waste of time on console unless you're picking a performance mode.

that reminds me, the Xbox used to have a system-wide inverted up preference, and now I have to set it on every single game

Always reloading, and usually at the wrong time.
Hoarding the best weapons/items to use when I really need them and then never actually using them.

Constantly changing my characters appearance in any game that let's you once you've actually started the game.
My Starfield character has had so many different hairstyles and facial hair.

How I play really aggressive when fighting a boss in say a Soulslike and then when I get them to a sliver of life I suddenly fall apart and play ridiculously passive.

Yeah, that's always the hardest part, especially if you've been stuck on them for a while. Once my mind is on the victory, I'll either get greedy and end up dying or become too timid and spend ages missing every opportunity to do damage

Definitely this - nothing like getting to the end of a game and realising I have two dozen of the strongest healing items available, that I was stockpiling for a moment that never actually arrived.

Smashing through the main storyline and then realising I have no motivation to go back and do heaps of side quests and busywork that would maybe have enriched my experience/value for money

Sometimes the side quests are genuinely more involved, for example I've really enjoyed the side quests of Phantom Liberty, they've actually had some thought into them and are quite morally grey.

It's not really related to any game at all but I still find myself flicking controllers up or reaching up to reposition the cable, even if it's a wireless one.

I find that if a game will allow me to, I will mainline some mechanic or mundane task to max out a skill, usually for peak efficiency at the detriment of other skills.
Can't help it and I've done it again with Starfield. Gone crazy with the scanning and data gathering both to get my head around the mechanics of the system and max out the skill. Then I moved onto something else.

I tend to (read: almost always) do side stuff/exploration first as much as I can... which usually leaves me overlevelled/overpowered for the main story, especially in open world games. Pretty much the opposite of Danno in that regard I also suffer from the Megalixir Syndrome (never use items) as do a lot of us here I would guess, although in my case it's usually that I forget they exist, rather than being afraid of wasting them. Nioh 2 was a good step towards changing that though.

Oh, and I have a rather relaxed attitude towards grinding strategies/exploits. The duping glitch(es) in TotK (for certain materials, at least), the poor bird (and by extension the out of bounds clip in the same area) in Elden Ring, the Renown underoverflow glitch in FE: Three Houses... All good in my book, all they really do is lessen farming busywork anyway (or in FE's case, make more in the short-term, but allow much more playing around in later playthroughs). All three of the above games are gonna take/have taken me 100+ hours anyway so it's hardly like I'm not getting my money's worth if I use said methods

Smashing through the main storyline and then realising I have no motivation to go back and do heaps of side quests and busywork that would maybe have enriched my experience/value for money I'm the opposite. I have to complete or at least progress sidequests ahead of the main story. I rarely complete either.
