When does the railgun unlock...level 20? I'm a lowly 11

You can get lucky hitting them in the mouth with other weapons but railguns are where it's at, if you find one on the battlefield pick it up as they're great against everything. The single shot and reload is a bit annoying to start with but it becomes second nature pretty quickly. Using it in unsafe mode adds some extra spice too, just don't blow yourself up.

I've seen examples of it online and found it pretty funny that my first experience of playing a mission with a group of 4, one of them decides to shoot all of us so they could take our samples. Think something needs to be done about that.
However jumping on this morning for a few missions with a total random and it was great. Backs to the wall stuff sometimes, helping each other out with supplies and stims. Really cool experience. Game feels good to play too, definitely gonna keep at it
Railguns great, arc cannon also pretty cool. Think jetpack is a bit naff tho unless I'm missing something, doesn't cover enough distance or something

The guy was a moron, everyone gets the samples no matter who extracts with them.

Yeah everyone gets the samples that extract (even if you don't make it back yourself), same as the requisition slips, medals and super credits but they're credited when picked up. Super credits doesn't trigger the message on anyone's screen but the person who picks up (may have been patched but it certainly didn't at launch).
Anyone killing for samples is a prick.

Ohh ok, my understanding was they were unique to whoever picked them up. Makes way more sense doing that in fairness, the devs seem decent about not having pvp toxicity in the game

Anyone fancy teaming up tonight for some hard/extreme missions tonight?

This has been creeping onto my radar but I can't convince any of my usual online gaming group to take a look even though some of them love starship troopers.
How does online work with randoms and stuff? I don't really like using voice coms with people I don't know.

You can jump into anyone's game if there's an active mission on the map. You can use tags to call out points of interest or waypoints on the map. All pretty intuitive, I get along just fine without needing to go on voice comms

Damn, this game is fun, but really doesn't show you the ropes much. Stuff I've learned: 1) Sometimes people want to complete objectives before extracting, and get pissed off if you trigger the shuttle when there are still objectives on the map. 2) Mouse button 3 to turn on the scope on your sniper rifle. I think I toggled an option to remember this but it doesn't seem to work. 3) If you go outside the map limits, you'll get fucked up. They seem to be invisible however so you need to turn the map on to go back in! 4) I haven't yet worked out how to communicate beyond clicking objectives on the map. 5) I suck at this game edit: further additions 6) This beginner's guide was really helpful for me www.youtube.com/watch?v=yaLcFVKMyrI7) Just discovered you can change difficulty - duh - so I'm playing alone on easy for a bit

Definitely doesn't bother to explain itself, but I think it's intentional as much of the fun is discovering it all anyway. Some of the ways to kill enemies are very inventive and they seem to have gone to a lot of effort to have the game react logically to what you do. Only bothered to check the railgun's options yesterday to see it has a safe mode that, when turned off, makes it even better, and more exciting.

So any tips about the laser cannon? It really doesn't seem to be too effective for me aside from possibly having infinite ammo? But it doesn't have armor piercing when machine gun and anti material rifle does sooooo...is there something I'm missing?

The laser cannon is pretty good against bugs but not sure about the bots.

But even against chargers, the laser bounces right off the armor.

But even against chargers, the laser bounces right off the armor. Pretty much everything bounces off their armour other than autocannon, anti-tank missile and recoilless rifle. Just try and hit squishy bit at the rear. Sounds so easy

I guess the question is, why would I pick laser cannon if there are options like the machine gun which makes it easier to manage? Because laser cannon doesn't seem that much better damage wise either.

The railgun pretty much changes everything. The machine gun should be binned as soon as you can get the stalwart anyway and the laser cannon is really a waste of reqs.
Had a very annoying extraction that failed late last night, me and a friend on a suicide mission (largely to collect super samples more than anything else) get to extract, manage to jump in the back of Pelican-1 and it behaved like we hadn't. Get killed by a bile titan while inside it, reinforce, grab the samples and try to get in again and still nothing. Ended up running out of reinforcements and Pelican-1 just pissing off. Guess my next ship upgrade will have to wait a bit longer. Mission was a "success" but felt more of a failure when it shouldn't have.
The mission up until that point had been pretty chaotic anyway, egg hunts can be a real pain at times and this was no exception, the one bright spark was finding the cock rock with super samples while running away from a mass of bugs.

Does this work best playing with others at a similar level (as in rank in the game, not actual skill at it)?
Would like to pick this up, but will only have limited PS5 time coming up as my partner is going to be smashing FF7 once it arrives.
Much prefer playing with FGers than randoms, but will obviously be lowly ranked for a while if I get it.

It doesn’t really make a huge difference apart from access to the better weapons and strategems. I would aim to unlock the breaker shotgun, stalwart LMG and Gatling sentry ASAP (shouldn’t take too long). Then you can make yourself useful at earlier levels.

I dont think I could get sick of the loading screen dropping into the planet. So cinematic, it hypes me up every time.

Holy shit. I enjoy watching your vids but they are not good for my blood pressure. There's a long way to go before I crank the difficulty to seven.

The game has done something I've been saying for a long time, boss fights where it's you up against some big thing that's got a zillion hit points and has to be attacked at certain weak points before you can damage it are shit. I'd rather have a lot of weaker enemies than a huge boss.
Helldivers 2 has more dangerous units, some rather large in the case of a Bile Titan but they're not bullet sponges or have attack patterns you have to learn, a single well placed shot can kill a Bile Titan or a Hulk and even if you don't manage that you can hurt them if you've got decent equipment.
Your first encounter with a Titan when you're ill-equipped and new to them is horrifying, later on they become a problem when you get a couple of them popping out of the same breach hole at the same time (it doesn't happen too often thankfully). Getting swamped by them and Chargers at the same time is never fun though!
Also annoying is reinforcing onto a Titan, killing it and getting stuck under their corpse, escaping that is pretty much impossible before you get clawed to death by its friends.

I think difficulty 5 is about the limit for me when playing with randoms. 6+ is just full of people alerting every patrol instead of focusing objectives and just getting bogged down in endless fight and respawn loops.

I just hit rank 10. After spending most of that time messing around with audio as both Bluetooth headsets had lots of issues I got myself a new headset that connects with a usb dongle and everything now works. Such a great fun game so far and stunning with that great theme track.
I think I slightly prefer fighting bugs as it feels more starship troopers but the robots are kind of cooler and have the bases etc. Adds a little variety at least and I hope down the line there is a third enemy.

I think I was playing difficulty 6 or 7 and two missions in a row against bugs seemed to have endless waves of medium sized enemies. It always occurred around half way through the mission and it was relentless. How do we avoid this happening? I know there are reinforcement types but this hasn’t happened before today where no matter where you went it was mental, at one point I got on a high point they could not reach and in every direction were bugs coming towards me.

I think that's for more experienced players to answer but - at lower levels, and certainly solo - you can be stealthier and avoid triggering a fair bit of nonsense (and there's armour to support this approach). Quite how you do that with a full team not communicating and at higher levels I'm not sure.

Not that it can't be done but I wouldn't be playing difficulty 6 or 7 at level 10 unless you have a very good squad. Everything gets more intense as the mission timer increases that includes lower difficulty. More bug breaches and robot drop ships, just more of everything. This can be stopped a bit by making sure every bug hole or fabricators are destroyed but you will still get swarmed at an extraction.

Okay good to know. So destroy all bases you come across along the way and don’t trigger everything. Hard with ransoms, it was me and a friend and two ransoms.
