I know the overall feeling in here and in general is somewhat lukewarm (and Quaddy's excitement in the Dragon's Dogma thread is infectious ) but all this is really getting me hyped! Bring on Friday!

DD feels like the better game to get at launch because I think it will be more fun to talk about on here! I will pick this up in a sale for sure though. The main thing that puts me off are the fly glider through floating checkpoint side missions, seriously I never want to see that shit in a game!

After going through the equivalent in FF7 Rebirth I can definitely agree with that.

Reviews aren’t too bad across the board. Trouble is that the game essentially seems serviceable at best. It’s reviewing well enough for me to definitely get it down the line.

Yeah, after 90 hours of FF7 Rebirth I’m just not interested in some more icon vomit for a little while.

I can't say I'm desperately excited by the ubification (and that fly the glider through the rings or whatever the hell made my eyes spin in their sockets).
But I am still excited. Very excited.
And as luck would have it I'm "working" from home tomorrow.

PS5 shows a timer that ends tonight at midnight, do I trust it or is it going to want to download more shite for like an hour (it's supposedly downloaded the game already AFAIK)...

76 at Metacritic.
FightinCowboy wasn't impressed - he titled his review, 'More Assassin's Creed than Nioh', and said that Rise of the Ronin is basically, "We have Ghost of Tsushima at home."

I think this looks pretty great tbh. Combat looks good with (shock horror) difficulty options included. Quite like the idea of an rpg deep dive into 19th century Japanese politics too.

Yeah I'm getting it I think. Was a toss up between this or DD2 but I can't be dealing with that uncapped framerate.
Wish there was demo though as Wo Longs combat didn't really do it for me.

It’s definitely weird that there’s no demo, especially since one of the best aspects of modern Team Ninja is showing their games earlier on and using player feedback to tune up the game. Maybe the open world zones meant it was too hard to parcel up a short section for testing.

The trouble is I keep looking at footage and seeing those big straw hats.
Dammit.

I’ll be staying up to give it a whirl but that’s nothing to do with stamina and everything to do with insomnia.

Graphics don't actually look that bad in 4k. Wonder if there's been a day one patch as even the horse looks less disabled. Looking forward to it after flicking through this

It apparently did download something a couple days ago, a few days after the actual download (and after the preview videos that were getting people worried were out, if that changes anything)...
Time will tell I suppose

JuniorFE Did you play Ghost of Tsushima, out of interest? That seems to be the most common reference point for Ronin that I've seen.

Although I never got to the DLC for some reason, presumably when it came out I was doing other things. Hey, if this doesn't pan out I've got something similar to go to

Yeah you know what, the more that I watch of this, the more I want to play it. It's now purely because of DD2 that I'm not getting it.

It's a victim of coming out at a bad time, with so many great games out a few weeks past, not even mentioning DD2 out on same day. I have quite a backlog so won't be jumping in right away, but will def play at some point.

Hey, if this doesn't pan out I've got something similar to go to On the dlc point with Ghost, fully recommend it, a good size map with a few new distractions, but for me the selling point is more of Jin's back story. I also love the PvE "horde" mode.

I just had a quick half an hour up until the end of the Black Ship mission, which I assume is the end of the prologue / tutorial. Positives: - Yeah, it's not going to win any awards for its graphics but it's really not that bad. It's on a par with Wo Long, I think.
- Fantastic combat - there's been a lot of talk of how it's been simplified, but I think that's from folk who are really thinking about Nioh or Ninja Gaiden: yes, it is streamlined, but the counterspark (parry) mechanic really works for me in this game so far, in a way it hasn't in others. The early fight against the Blademaster with some successful repeated parrying - something normal gamers can do, but idiots like me can't - was glorious.
- Familiarity...Assassin's Nioh. The inventory is Nioh, basically...so is the Ki system...so are many of the sound effects. The loot seems similar so far. It's comforting.
- The Blade Twin mechanic - how is this going to evolve? I like it a lot so far.
- The Bakumatsu setting / context: intriguing so far, I can sense some potential in it. The black steampunk ship, belching smoke out, Commodore Matthew "can I be any more evil" Perry.
Negatives: - Starting it up and realising it had English audio. Ugh.
- It doesn't look like Ghost of Tsushima. It looks nowhere near like Ghost of Tsushima. But then, I suppose, not many games do.
- Some mechanics are okay but not particularly satisfying: the grappling hook, stealth kills. Maybe it's the veil of familiarity here - it doesn't always work in the game's favour. (Edit: that said, using the grappling hook to throw explosive barrels at enemies is fun)
- It's not fair to criticise something I haven't experienced yet as I'm still in the linear early stages but I wonder how long it will be before the open world repetition outstays its welcome. I really really hope it's nowhere near as long or big as something like Valhalla. Give me a tighter, tidier open world, please. I'm happy to find and stroke cats but hang gliding through hoops can get to fuck.
Looking forward to more a bit later. I do need to pretend to do some work today.

You can change to Japanese audio.

I know, I quit out and did so. It's just me being snobby and faux-shocked that it was English by default.

I play the vast majority of games with the English dub... Have never done that with a Team Ninja game (except Stranger of Paradise) and didn't do it with Ghost of Tsushima either. It just feels wrong not to have Japanese voices, in a way other games don't, even when those games' JP dubs are also really well done.
(Of course I also played Wo Long with the Japanese voice track, so I'm unsure where that leaves me re: purity of the experience...)

Anyway, first impressions having played a little past where FlexibleFeline mentioned last night (I spent like an hour and a half in character creation because of course I did): The framerate did feel a little choppy in graphics mode but performance mode runs well so far while losing very little of the visual appeal Icon vomit feels much less intense than in Ubi games (so far, maybe it picks up later), and it also feels a bit more organic than "kill these guys minding their own business because the checklist says so" "Combat is shallow" seems like a very shallow (ha!) criticism, sure you don't start with much but apparently there's like 15 different stances to mix and match with multiple weapon types, a skill tree, the Counterspark... Even if it doesn't end up as complex as Nioh in the end there's still a lot here Speaking of the Counterspark, the timings haven't 100% clicked with me yet (the camera angle going a bit sideways when locking on to an enemy, while very cinematic, doesn't help) but it's mostly a matter of practice, and it flows very well when you get the hang of it! (very early boss spoiler) In the "for real" fight against the Bladesmith, she did her flying red attack the second the fight began, and I hit the Counterspark basically on reflex, my brain was still going "oh hell" Immensely satisfying And as long as I'm mentioning Prologue spoilers, here's another for the sake of a joke (and a little idle plot guessing): Here I am, thinking that for this TN game with a character creator I'll play as a guy, honest guv, making my Blade Twins all headcanon-related and everything (a woman based on a character from another game and "me" as her shadow warrior)... Then The Choice™ comes up and I promptly sacrifice "myself" because it would fit my headcanon better Third time was not the charm, off I go playing a girl again! (side note, I only saw an arm cut off so I bet dollars to donuts "I'm" not dead, the plot implies that to be the case pretty heavily too... and I'm also pretty sure the masked fellow that Luke Skywalker-ed me is the Bladesmith's Blade Twin and there's a parallel to be seen)

Oh, and apparently every open world game is contractually obligated to have a (visual spoiler) Breath of the Wild moment at the start nowadays

Glad you're enjoying it, Junior! Please continue to update the thread with your thoughts as you progress through the game - I'm very much on the fence about getting it, but I'll put more stock in your opinions than those of Random Reviewer Person.
