My brain is wired to play every video game conservatively, even Doom. I'll switch to the single shotgun to snipe something at a distance in Doom and Quake. Chainsaw those Pinkies and Cacodemons. Quake's Axe is rubbish though

I'm definitely chainsawing Pinkies, not Cacodemons though, it's too unreliable and risky. And yeah, I always shotgun zombies from a distance. Doom 2 made that especially easy, as it constantly swarmed you with more shotgun ammo than you know what to do with, even on UV.
And even in Quake, the basic shotgun is more useful than one would think. Much more than the Doom pistol for sure.

The incinerator in Legacy of Rust is an interesting 'new' kind of ammo conservation weapon, since it's so much more effective when you feather the trigger and just lock enemies down. It's a new dynamic against Arch-Viles and can even kinda sort of put Cyberdemons into a pain state and stop them firing, though I wouldn't depend on it.
I found E2M1 of Legacy of Rust to be pretty rough in terms of ammo but that's a deliberate thing for that level, and of course there's E1M6 where it pretty much just gives you one type of ammo. By the end of the episode you're just getting loads of flame ammo for the calamity blade and it's just absolute carnage, great fun.

Looking behind the sofa is no problem, but he's unable to look under the sofa. And I think it might be there.

Extra doom ammo conservativsm - if you click fire the pistol it's laser accurate, if even slower. Probably the most ammo efficient way to kill zombies at range.
I never really bother chainsawing the pinkies. I should, but it feels like sometimes they manage to hit me through it and I've never understood why.

Apparently so is the chaingun, only you can't fire less than two fire shots at once. But I'm pretty sure zombies need at least two hits to kill anyway, and they give you 5 ammo for each clip, so it might be a good idea overall.

This is quite fun. Dario Casali, one half of the Plutonia design team and who later joined valve and was a designer on Half-Life etc has a youtube channel where he has a couple of playthroughs of Doom WADs. One series is Valiant, which is an awesome map set.

Have been listening to the OSTs of different versions of Doom 1. The 32X one is quite something.

I first thought it was a joke but then I looked up some gameplay. This is actually real.

Whew, just finished the Master Levels for Doom 2. That was... painful. I'm not going to play them ever again. Was this really the best mappers could muster in the 90s?

Finished base Ganymede today, which happens to be one of the "official" addons.
Played in UV with forced pistol start. The first episode is pretty good but a bit OTT with the "lol shit spawned behind you" stuff. Episode 2 has a nice set of level layouts but is just completely fucking obnoxious, especially map 4 which gives you no ammo and makes you berserk punch everything. Episode 3 was good though, minus a garbage boss level.

About halfway through the TNT Evilution levels. They are pretty tiring to actually play. Whoever made these levels must have decided that the shotgun and chaingun zombies are the most annoying enemies in the game and that every map must be full of them. i'm tempted to just drop it and go straight to No Rest for the Living.

Have you all tried playing doom with the new ray tracing mod? It's truly game changing. Looks waaaaay better

Looks too incongruent to me. Just Doom with some modern tech shoved in. Interesting for RT enthusiasts but doesn't add anything in my opinion (actually looks way worse). Original lighting just meshes better with the engine. It's like Doomsday using 3D models and everything because 3D is better. It looks awful
Don't know if I'm an outlier but these kind of things always look a bit naff for me and I'm not sure what the point is. People tend to rave about Quake 2 RT but to my eyes it doesn't look more realistic in an atmospheric way, it looks more realistic in that it makes everything look like actual physical objects. But as the assets are so old, it just looks like a toy set
Looks good in Doom Eternal though, where it belongs really

True. I think there's only about 4 people here who rate Eternal

Playing Doom Eternal now. It’s still good but nowhere near the original or 2016, the amount of jumping is just a bit annoying.

I too am playing Eternal. I’d say it plays better than 2016 but the main issue I have is getting lost - which isn’t dissimilar to the OG games to be honest - but when that’s tied in with basically platforming (much harder in first person) it can be visually confusing.
I still think it’s a pretty marvellous game though and I’d fully expect the new one to basically iterate on it.

I'm firmly in the Doom Eternal is amazing camp. Even love the platforming. Somehow they made platforming feel chunky and satisfying

Not a fan of the platforming but Eternal is one of the games where the gunplay and movement options are just incredible. I just really appreciate how tactical it is. Thought the dlc was a bit too much though with sticking doggedly to gimmicks such as having to use the microwave attachment on the plasma rifle.

Incredible map and really great video. About an hour through and I'm not even a Doom mod player. Just a thoroughly absorbing video.

I'm in the eternal is OK camp. It'd clearly designed around having everything available to you and just feels a bit shit until you have all the guns etc.
There's also too much use of the "wait until the enemy lets you kill them" mechanic in the 2nd dlc.

I’m quite far into Eternal now and cannot put it down. I’ll reserve judgement until the end but I’m beginning to think it’s in the top few post-boomer (sorry) FPS ever, possibly top one or two. That’s stacking it against stuff like Halo 1 and 3, the first Wolf reboot, Titanfall 2, and the two MW1s. To me these are the pinnacle of these things but Eternal is offering stuff none of the others do.
I think it was the IGN review where it was said it had become an E Sport and I can see that - but once you get the loop it feels incredible, and the exploration is second to none.
I’ll definitely be having a break before finally tackling the DLCs.
It’s been funny playing 2016 and this back to back, as I’m enjoying them much more the second time around. Agree with the comment above about it being more fun when you are tooled up though - I’ve gone back on a couple of levels to find secrets and it’s so much easier once you level your stuff up.

The horde mode is worth a shot when you're done with the campaign and DLC too
