‘Before he became a hero…he was the super weapon of gods and kings’
‘He was what?…… oh, yeah… the ‘story’…’

I love how all in they went with the lore for Eternal, especially twisting heaven and hell into science fiction. It's all in service to making Doom Guy the ultimate badarse and the constant escalation of the game's story

Very much down for this. Modern Doom has been excellent and easily the best recent FPS games. They really manage to feel both old skool and current at the same time. I did think Eternal got a little too bogged down in adding more "stuff", but it was still great.
Liked the trailer a lot (although it was mixed in with a whole of grimdark trailers in the Xbox show, although this managed to do it with a slightly less serious face than those around it). Could have done with a little more original Quake stylings, but still an instant play for me.

I love how all in they went with the lore for Eternal, especially twisting heaven and hell into science fiction. I always think that’s the pussies way out, tbh. They did it in the first few Thors, hedging with the asgardians being ‘sufficiently advanced aliens’ to avoid upsetting the Fundies. I dunno, I think it really neutered the plot. It’s much more unsettling when it’s actual hell and you’re some random geezer not an alien super soldier with a space station. Same with Aliens, it’s not something that really needs explaining (although I appreciate that in modern times it probably needed to elaborate on something)

I'd never considered they did it to appease anyone but Doom has always been a power fantasy. It's only Doom 3 that went full horror. It also explains why a lot of the demons are cybernetic
The first Quake has a much more unsettling supernatural tone and setting

There's a cool classic Doom 2 marine skin you can unlock in Eternal by playing the horde mode that comes with a pose of him holding Daisy. There's also an excellent Ranger skin
I still have no idea what the barbarian one is about. I thought it was going to be from a flashback or something in the DLC but nope

Did anyone else read the Flynn Taggart novels?
I really enjoyed the first two at the time but the third and fourth when the plot diverted away from the premises of Doom 1 and 2 got a bit weird. It turned out that the demons were created by aliens based on humanities greatest fears in order to conquer Earth and steal our resources or something. I was a bit lost off by the idea of demons being replaced by parsnip shaped aliens.

That looks great, loved Eternal as well and this looks like they've doubled down on that even more.

This could be a a very rare thing for me nowadays, a day one purchase!
Not sure about the air combat though.

Day one freebie for me!
Doom 2019 a solid 10/10 and eternal was a 9/10 so I’m hyped for this beauty. Great trailer as well.

I think I prefer Eternal over 2016. The sheer freedom of movement in Eternal and actually having to think about what you're doing in combat made it hard to go back to 2016 which felt incredibly slow even though it's a very fast game.

Same. Considering I bounced off Eternal first time once I “got” it, it was an incredible experience. Love that game. I am all over this new one. Not been this hyped for a game for some time.

I should probably give Eternal another go. I was one of those players who found it a bit overly fussy when the glory of Doom to me has always been the purity of its gameplay

I wonder what the Edge writer who reviewed the OG Doom thinks about Doom's current incarnation?

The game play loop of Eternal is better, but 2016 sort of hangs together as a single-player experience a bit better. I know the plot is utter bobbins in both, but it is somehow more forgettable in Eternal.
It might just be that after so long without DOOM the intro of "Rip and Tear until it is done", basic tutorial, then a banging version of Doom's Gate just rocking out.

I will say that yeah Doom 2016 starts super fucking strong with how it just throws you straight into things like a god honest video game. I think of something like Derivative The Game (Immortals of Aveum) and my god it took ages to actually let you play the game for real. By the time it was actually in the story I was bored of it.

Yeah we need more games that insert you into the action right from the get go. What's more, modern games like Immortals pretend to give you skippable cutscenes... but the in-game cutscenes where you are in control are almost never skippable. My god.

2016 was fucking ace but I bounced off the second one as well. Feel like giving it another go as there just doesn't seem to be single player first person shooters anymore.
That trailer looks great, except the flying.

To be fair, even in Eternal the Slayer doesn't give a fuck about the story either, just killing everything and not caring about the consequences You must restore the Father Kills the Father and restores the Dark One, so he can kill him as well Eternal has a lot more variety in locations due to the story jumping about a bit
That shotgun load at the end of the elevator in the 2016 opening is perfect

Eternal Deluxe Edition containing both DLCs is now £14.99 for a few days on the Xbox store.
Whilst you may baulk at paying for the base game which is on Gamepass, the Ancient Gods DLCs are not - and this essentially means a BOGOF across the two of them. Have bitten.
