It kind of made the whole "monster closet" thing work better as well, as you would suddenly hear them spawn and have to put the torch away, frantically looking around in the dark until a fiery red glow denoted a fireball about to be lobbed in your direction. The lighting was absolutely stunning when it launched.
I'll still take the BFG edition over nothing of course.

It's frustrating that there's a modern port of Doom 3 but you can't play the game the way it was actually designed to be. People made it as a mod for the original, it should have been an option in the BFG version rather that the default.
The flashlight battery was actually introduced as a mechanic in BFG - in the original release it was infinite. Presumably as a half arsed attempt to balance it.
IMO they should have kept the environments as dark as they were in the original and if you want the flashlight to be usable with guns, it's modified so that it has a much smaller illumination radius.

To somewhat fulfill the 'and id software' part of the thread, The Spiritworld episode you can download for the Bethesda release of Quake is incredible. Amazing level design and atmosphere. Highly recommend it
And putting vores on the ceiling makes them even more creepy than they already are

Dimension of the Past and Call of the Machine for Quake 1 and 2 are some of the best stuff that Machinegames has done, and that's not damning with faint praise - they're really excellent and stretch the engines to their limits. They justify the re-releases on their own.

Arcane Dimensions and Alkaline are both spectacular Quake mods too. AD in particular is like, the platonic ideal of what Quake should be as far as I'm concerned. It pushes the level design possibilities beyond anything that could have been imagined back then.

Scourge is also great for the first two thirds until they introduce the fleshy mine things. I've still never managed to finish the other expansion, it's just so boring
I've only played Arcane Dimensions a little bit and was turned off by the mix and match enemies/attacks from the base game. Felt the same way about the Eviternity WAD for Doom and some of the levels are just way too big

Duff articulated it well - the flow of combat always felt more restrictive than the 2016 reboot but I'll try and push through the early stages this time.

Plutonia is my fave. It's absolutely brutal and a bit patchy quality wise but its influence on WAD design is unparalleled. Yeah, it's very good. There's quite a decent selection of total conversions too, along with various challenging wads. Hell Revealed 1 and 2 really bloody test you. I can't remember if I can do them fully without cheating on ultraviolence, never mind nightmare

Funnily enough, last night I couldn't decide what to listen to while I was pottering about cooking, so I ended up listening to doom 1 and 2's soundtracks back to back.
Surprised at how many are basically blues chords but played with metal guitar. But some of them are brilliant. Phobos Lab from doom 1 especially.
I feel cozy in this thread.

I saw an IGN review of the DLC that argued that Eternal had become a bit like a single player E-sport and I don’t think that’s far off the mark.

But again that’s what they tried to do. Think of it more like a puzzle game with the combat encounters. It’s a very different beast which is why I suppose it’s more divisive. You need to either be all in on it or I think you bounce off it.

My main recollection of them both is Mars levels, city levels and dirt levels, then some space shit in Eternals. The dirt ones were cool but I didn't want them constantly. I saw a lot of dirt in the Dark Ages trailer. Want some office blocks to clamber around.

It's set in the past so I don't think you're going to get any office blocks, definitely castle environments though.

Made it to the third level so far and it’s nuts. Yeah, it's great. Keeps the otherworldly tone of the base game but does things you haven't seen before, like swimming through water across ceilings. I think it's the third or fourth map where there's a city area that's so moody. The fact it's all in the level design, without altering the gameplay is what I love about it. So creative

I made it past that water level but jesus wept it's brutal. Very addicive though and yeah, VERY imaginative. Some properly cool stuff going on.
One thing though, which I have against Quake in general - Spawns are fucking shit enemies. Utter shit. Even Vores can be a little unfair but Spawns are just stupid.

I’ve always found Quake the hardest of the id shooters. I don’t know whether its the enemies or the level layouts but its the one that’s always kept me on my toes.
As an aside I fell down a rabbit hole of watching videos of Doom 16 demakes into the original Doom engine last night. Some tremendous stuff there.

I hate spawns and vores - it's actually a shame that the remaster doesn't let you use the Copper mod from Underdark Overbright with the other addons, because it makes Vore projectiles way less irritating instead of having near perfect tracking.
One thing to remember with Quake is that it's not as Doomlike as you'd think and that you're probably not wanting to use your shotgun like you would in Doom. Your Rocket Launcher is basically your primary weapon once you get it.

It's enemies are pretty much all challenging to fight. id really did some sterling work there. I mean one of the basic enemies met early on lobs grenades at you and has a chainsaw. Quake 2 has a brilliant diverse selection as well but there is no particular enemy in Q1 that makes me think it'll be an easy fight. Even the zombified rangers with their shotguns are tough if they get the drop on you. Maybe the basic knight, until you get them mixed up alongside other mobs. Fiends are fucking nuts and if you've not got a super nailgun when you meet a shambler it's game over.

I love Fiends, they're pretty exhilarating when you keep just barely dodging their leaps so that you can almost feel the wind. Knowing how you just barely escaped a quick death several times in a row, because these guys don't fuck around.
But even so Q1 is the only id game I've ever beaten on nightmare (except Q3A) because thankfully, nightmare difficulty isn't as insane in this game as it is in Doom 1/2.
