Fun fact about Shamblers - they take half damage from explosives.

I adore quake. I played it for absolutely years online and still go through the single player and some mods regularly.
But yes, fuck spawns!
The setting really hits home with me too. I love the gothic castle type architecture and the absolute frenzied attacks.
Not to mention Mr Reznor's contribution.

Fun fact about Shamblers - they take half damage from explosives. To be fair the old manual did warn us: Didn’t realise it was as much as half damage though. Mental.

Fun fact about Shamblers - they take half damage from explosives. And they're furry. I hope there's Shamblers in The Dark Ages so we can put this to rest
Vores are my favourite. Really creepy. Their projectiles do make them useful for getting them to fight with other enemies
Spawns on the other hand are awful. Always bemuses me why they appear in custom maps. The campaign showed us that there's just nothing fun about the jumpy exploding in your face twats
Having played through both recently, Quake 2 is way easier than 1. They've altered Nightmare difficulty for the first game in the Bethesda port by halving your max health. I played it through once like that but leave it on Hard now. Love me some full health

After bouncing off Resi 6 I’ve decided to start a Doom 2016 run. Am determined to find all the secrets and stuff this time so am going through a level as normal and then returning with an on/off guide to hoover up any missing bits.
It really is great isn’t it. The map design is just brilliant and that Id engine runs like a Ferrari. It’s dripping in heavy metal album cover vibe. So over the top. I reckon this was the best single player shooter since Halo 3 and I don’t think anyone has matched it since.

Finished 2016 tonight. Have been playing it fairly solidly for a fortnight and gave up about 2/3 on finding/unlocking everything so it could have doubtlessly lasted a bit longer still.
Anyway I liked it a lot the first time I played it but now I love it. So much that I’m really keen to dive straight into Eternal and then the DLC…but I don’t know if that’s a good idea and whether I should have a palate cleanser. Armored Core is one I have in mind as I never quite got through it on release. Think it’s probably for the best but am really looking forward to it now.
Question - can anybody remember the name of the indie boomer shooter from the last couple of years that is in this vein?
I’ve also noticed both the Quakes on Gamepass. I should probably make time for those at some point I guess.

It was Prodeus thanks guys. Was looking for it in the Xbox store last night but they don’t make it easy.
Boltgun I loved…but the navigation in it was atrocious. I never finished it because I got sick of being lost. I’ll bounce back at some point.

They added a navigation button in a recent patch, that might help. I never found the shooting to feel right though and that hasn't changed.

My issue with Boltgun was how bullet spongey stuff was on Hard. Medium was just too easy for me and Hard became a bit of a slog.
Ultrakill is the one to check out if you're a PC player. It's incredible.

I’m about halfway through Prodeus at the moment and absolutely love it. I know people make digs at its originality (lack of) but they’ve effectively turned Quake 2 into Doom and that couldn’t appeal more to me. The combat and movement are both super fluid and the weapons satisfyingly crunchy.

We should make this a classic FPS/boomer shooter thread. That way I can gush about how good roboquest is somewhere

You may gush about random FPS games if you don't call them boomer shooters. That's the only rule

I think the term is enough part of popular culture to be used and people know what it means. Sprite based FPS with a vintage vibe harkening to Doom/Quake/Dark Forces/Shadow Warrior.
I think it’s a term of affection. It should really be Xennial Shooter though but let’s not split hairs. But it’s much simpler to use two words than to explain all the above every time.

I wouldn't say sprite based, as you said the category includes games like Quake, and I'd argue arena shooters like Q3A and UT were the final stage of the "genre" before it all but disappeared entirely.
I wonder what the biggest turning point was that brought about their end. Half-Life? Counter-Strike? Halo? All together?

It seemed to come around the same time that FPS games became more console focused. CS and Q3A seemed to exist fine together
It might have been Call of Duty and publishers moving away from community servers/content. It's all battle royale games now. Even single player FPS games don't seem very popular at the moment

True. Maybe it was also a process with several stages. I think Half-Life put an end the single player "campaign" side of them as it completely changed what people expected from a shooter campaign, but in the multiplayer space they could still thrive for a few more years.

It is interesting to see where PC shooters had actual campaigns with plots and voice acting while still under the surface maintaining that "get the red key" structure. It's kinda crazy from there that a structured plotted game became quite normal very quickly way before Halo showed its face. I think of something like Daikatana really trying to bring that epic game feeling despite it falling flat on its face. I appreciate that I grew up in that time period and was able to take part in that explosion of PC fps.

The boomer shooter tag always made sense to me because my dad was playing stuff like Doom/Quake when I was a kid, and he's very much of the boomer generation. But I assume it was generally meant to be used ironically. I think it's mostly meant to capture "FPS games that have actual weapon/enemy variety and some semblance of level design existing". Anyway, roboquest is basically the perfect video game if you like FPS and you like Roguelikes. Looks great, runs great, feels great to play. Lots of guns, lots of areas, lots of secrets, lots of build variety, etc. Great stuff. Planning to check The Immortal Lock mod for Quake at some point soon: www.slipseer.com/index.php?resources/the-immortal-lock.371/

I like FPS as that differentiates from shoot’em ups.
I reckon Half Life was the turning point as it introduced narrative. Until then it was see stuff, shoot stuff, and in the case of Duke Nukem 3D, ogle stuff.

Was trying to play OG Doom2 on Switch last night. It feels weird playing with a controller. Doesn't feel right and seems to make things like dodging imp fireballs while targeting much harder.
I assume when I played it originally it was with mouse and keyboard, although there's a small chance I got through it on keyboard alone. If so, I was much more committed back then.
Maybe I'll get used to it.
